Appo at Radford

Aug Sep Oct, " Appo has no chance against Radford this year." "Radford wins if they meet by 2 TDs at least." "This year its Radford and everybody else in C."

I read some of these comments earlier on and warned the Raiders will be different come mid November and dangerous, and that Radford was certainly not the only team in C that could win the region. Now, all of a sudden, the above statements earlier in the year don't have the same meaning or emotional pull they once had. I think most now realize the difference in teams was not close to the gap many thought it to be, and that the final 4 teams in Region C are very close and ANY of the 4 can win it.

I favor Radford over Appo in our game, but no surprise whatsoever if it's neck and neck in the final minute. I would be surprised if either team were to win by more than 8 pts. Going to be a heck of a game and the Bobcats better be ready for a first class opponent coming to town. To be the man, you have got to beat the man, and so far, nobody in C seems to be beating the man. Hopefully we can turn it around and get a W. It's going to be close.

I don’t remember anyone posting your first comment but I always did think Radford was the favorite in the region. Tim Worles after the game compared Appomattox to equivalent of Radford in basketball. You know like when you stated Radford had no chance against James River in basketball and they beat them twice. Anyway no disrespect to Appomattox has ever given by myself, I going to favor them because of the coaching. Last night showed as in multiple times throughout the season that Crist management leaves something to be desired. With less than 40 seconds up 28-12 and your opponent running the ball up the middle, you don’t call timeout. Because of these timeouts Gretna gets opportunities and ends up scoring before half. If the game comes down to the wire I favor Appomattox, if Radford can keep them at arms length then I think they move on.

I would not be surprised if any of the four left won the region. Like last night most thought Glenvar and Floyd would be the closest game and it was actually the least closest of all four. Dan River had Martinsville tied at half, Appo was just up 9-0 at half and Gretna just trailed by 10 at the half. On one side note I was proud of how my Hawks battled last night. They played Radford harder than I thought they would even though the final score might not indicate that. IMO watching Gretna play Appo and Radford I favor Appo in this one but will be great game and could go either way. Glenvar seems to have hit it's stride at right time.

I agree Gretna fought hard last night. In the rain 2 hours from home and not many in the stands a lot of teams would have given up early. Gretna showed a lot of heart. Hats off to the team and coaches.

Many of us have said it would be a like climbing a tall mountain to have a chance at beating Radford. Last night it looks like we have lost Pennix so that climb is going to be much harder. Granted the other players have really dug in and are doing amazing things to keep moving forward. Appo will have to come out the gate full speed and not wait until 2nd half like they did against Alleghany. I look for Kelso , Bradley and Caruso along with the Peterson an Fleshman combo to break out. I'm sure coach will work on ball security this week as we had too many fumbles and have a game plan.

Proud of the Hawks last night also. The score doesn't show how well the defense played. When we played Appomattox we had key injuries on defense. Last night was the first game I remember all of our starters were on the field and it showed. So comparing how Gretna fared against Appomattox versus against Radford will be no indication of how Radford - Appomattox may end. Should be a great game.

Hats off to the sportsmanship I saw 7 of Radford show.

Still scratching my head on the intentional grounding called early against Gretna. There was a receiver in the vicinity. Maybe the ball didnt reach the line of scrimmage if that is of importance on the call in high school?

agree on the intentional grounding. he was in the box and it didn't make the LOS but I believe 5 was close enough to not make that call. happy to hear the words on 7 as our friends to the north don't feel that way about him:) I thought Gretna looked fast and athletic. The line play allowed Radford to get in the backfield and that was a big difference. it caused bad throws and turnovers.

Glad to hear that you felt the same way RadfordCat on the grounding call.

Agree totally on our line play. It has been our achilles heel all year. But when it is said and done most of the time it is line play that is the difference in every game at all levels. We are loaded with "skills" just need more lineman to come out.

Agree thought we had receiver in the area but what I don't understand it is usually loss of down and spotted where QB was when passing it. When did they start marking ten yards off from where QB threw it? Ended up being almost twenty years penalty. I know in college it's loss of down where it occurred basically like making it a sack. Never seen them mark ten extra off.

One accomplishment for Gretna is the interception on Clark, that was the first of the season. He has 40TD passes vs 1 interception.

With game time temp likely in the low to mid 30’s falling into upper 20’s ball security is definitely going to be important and passing may be a bit harder.

Radford's D has struggled. Can Appo slow down R's offense? That will decide the game.
You know the saying, offense wins games, defense wins championships. I really don’t much about either team but to make the deep run, your D needs to be nasty tough in most cases. I’m sure there are exceptions.

Not saying that Radford D is anything to write home about but it appears 439-184 while Appomattox is at 328-212. Points scored vs points given up.

Would love to see this game in person. If it's Friday night, I might make the trip and brave the cold to watch it.
Or, maybe I'll just sit back in the recliner and watch it in the recliner from the comfort of home on NFHS. Yeah, I think I'll do that...

Any idea how many of those points came when starters had been pulled? I’d say points allowed by the first string is less than the 184.
