or near the goal line knowing our kickoff return unit doesn't block well? Similar to what you see in NFL this year where they're playing the odds they can stop return shorter than they would spot ball on a touchback.

Curious on others thoughts. Thanks.

The problem we have had this year is returning kicks that were kicked 5 yards deep into the end zone. Anything kicked more than 1 yard deep should not be returned.
In general I agree with you but its not completely true. If the kick is low and flat it gives the returner a better opportunity to get some yards than the high kick. Our problem has been that Tre has made some horrible decisions on when to bring it out or even when to field it. I wondered out loud last week if he should be replaced after he fielded that kick and stepped on the out of bounds line.

Unfortunately, for a college team to have special team play this poorly is unfathomable, staying with and in the face of your assignment is key, otherwise your not on the special team.

Kicking into the corner right at the goal line is something a lot of teams are doing nowadays. They try to kick it high and use the sideline as an extra defender.

So we should teach our returners when to catch and run, when to catch and take a knee, and when to let it bounce next to the out of bounds line and bounce out or through the end zone if that is becoming commonplace nowadays.

He is a true freshman though, but true freshman sometimes do better early in their career vs later in their career.

Maybe we need a dedicated special teams coach. Oh wait....

We returned one last week from the 5 yard line that looked like it would have gone out of bounds and at least two more that were difficult to validate as returns verses letting it go out the end zone or downing it. It should not matter how old the returner is as the coach can give specific instructions or replace them. Needs to improve.

Ditto, field position will be a premium in this game tonight so we need our staff to realize 25 yard line is a good start.

Lets hope that we at least get the chance to return some punts. Do you hear me Blackshirts?
