Nice read in CL today on him. I wasn't aware he was playing football again..
I hope he doesn't go to Bama or UK... He would be huge next year with Hood and Moultrie.

Standing Tall

He decided to play football again for the first time since the ninth grade.

Carter recalled the time Pollard ran a blazing 4.42 in the 40 at a football camp.</p>

"They made him run it again and he ran a 4.34," said Carter. "So he's not a long, lanky uncoordinated kid. He can run."</p>
Looks like we have offered Dandy Dozen Junior Marquis Vance and are looking hard at Junior Moses Kingsley of New Albany.
Anyone know anything about Kingsley?

or a 4.4 for that matter. I love how every Bubba of a high school coach has their star player running 4.4 or faster. Truth of the matter is that there are only ahandfulof guys who have that kind of speed anyway and if there was a 6'7"receiverwith 4.3 speed in Kemper County everyone and everybody would be on it.<div>
</div><div>Hope he signs with state. End of rant.</div>

he will see all the Final Four talent we have and want tojoin in. However, with the worst coach in the history of basketball whose teams only shoot threes and never play defense, he may pass up on a chance for a national title.

We were horrible on defense last year, but to say that we never play defense is wrong. Before last year, we were in the top 25 in OppFG% for 4 straight years, including being 9th in 09-10 and 2nd in 07-08. I know Varnado had a lot to do with that, but he wasn't the only one playing defense. Going backwards from 06-07 to 02-03 we finished 23rd, 45th, 43rd, 47th, and 15th. That's not bad considering our ability to rebound the ball defensively during those years.

Stans is a bad offensive coach, he actually has done a good job on the defensive end, not counting last year.
We should shoot way less 3 pointers this year with the RSS, Moultrie, and Lewis down low..
I also expect to see Dee, Deville, Hood, and Bryant taking it of the dribble and to the hole a lot this year, not so much the usual Stand and Shoot as in years past.
You must be upset that I called MadDawg the biggest smart-*** on the board, good try though with your little snide comments....

Do you think that the lack of a decent post game the past 4-5 seasons (and having more talent at the outside positions) has lead to our relying on outside shooting, more? I know this falls on Stans for not recruiting (or getting one to campus)a legit inside guy during this time.

J-Money did what he wanted without any repercussions. I am not sure what he had on Stans, but it must have been really good. We went guard heavy when he was on the team so he could showcase his one on one skills in hopes of getting in the NBA. We had Rhodes during this time on the post, but J-money ran off other players that would have benefited the team in the post.
We also missed out on Tiny Gallon and the had to wait over a year for the RSS to be eligible. So I think it is on Stans either way you look at it, he didn't sign post players and/or he let J-Money dictate how we run our offense. Both of these are reasons that Stans fell in love with the 4 guard gimmick and we lived and died by the 3 ball with an undersized power forward like Turner or Slater. This year we should finally have a post heavy offense, and when we shoot a 3 and miss have a good chance of the rebound. I am cautiously optimistic...

We will see a different look this year for sure having both Sidney and Moultrie.

Over the past several years we have trended towards one big, 4 guys floating on the perimeter for our offensive sets. This frees up space for someone to either work the ball down low to our big guy or make an individual move to the basket within the last few seconds of the shot clock, hence bailing out our lack of plays, movement without the ball, etc. Jamont was the king of this. Stansbury appeared to give up on attempting to run plays on the offensive end because Jamont wouldn't do it for whatever reason. Several players left because of this it appears. The past is the past.

This year two of our best players are big guys: Moultrie and Sidney. Lewis appears to be ready to give solid minutes at the 5 as well. We should have two big players in the game at most times, but if they just stand around under the basket calling for the ball with the other three passing around the perimeter, opposing teams will crowd the lane, stuff our offense and we will be scratching our heads wondering how we just lost to : insert name of marginal school here. Now Sidney might be good enough to plow through a double team and go right over the top of players like vs Fla Tech last week. He was a bad dude the first three minutes of the second half, but he immediately subbed out at 17:00 min and wasn't back in for a while. *see prior posts about Sidney not being good for much more than a 5 min burst here and there. I saw nothing last Sat. to convince me otherwise. Maybe he will improve as the season goes on, but even if he doesn't Lewis and Moultrie are going to have to do a good job moving without the ball, and passing to one another.

S. Smith is not a player. Hearing Stans talk about how he is the most improved reminds me of Stans talking in prior years about how Benock could hit 20 3 pointers in a row, worthless babble. Bryant looked good last week, but he is a little streaky for my taste with his flat shot and awkward shooting style. I am reminded of Ravern going 6-7 from three one night, then going 1-8 the next game when we play a team with an athletic 3 who extends the D on him.

In my opinion, Stansbury needs to figure out how to divide the minutes up among twogroups(Deville, Dee and Steele), then (Sidney, Moutlrie and Lewis). Hood looks like he will get a lot of minutes at the 3 from what I can tell.
Those are7 talented, quality players and with them we can go far. Bryant will get more minutes than I think he should, but then he looked really great last week so I could bewrong. However, when Bryant goes 1-7 and we lose to a scrub team, remember this post and know that we have better scoring options on this team.

In answer to your question about post players. The worst thing Stans could do this season is play Sidney at the 5for the first 3-4 min of the half, then sub in some little guy like Shaun Smith, slide Moultrie down to the 5 leaving W. Lewis on the bench. If this happens, I will cry. It wouldn't surprise me though, especially if our offense stagnates with two bigs down low. Other teams can make it work, some even use it to their advantage?

the impression that us going to a more guard heavy offense was because of the lack of an inside game. Not so much that a college basketball coach forgot how to coach.

Stans saw us lose to a Xavier team that was on fire from the outside for 3 weeks before losing a close one to Duke (with some help from a few key foulouts) in the Elite 8 and he saw us lose to Butler in a game where we couldn't throw the ball in the ocean from 15 feet with no one guarding us. I think Stans decided that to advance in the tournament he needed to have a team that could shoot the ball from the outside and I think he changed his philosophy from a pound the ball inside style to a more wide open 3-point shooting style. I think that was a huge mistake for him and I think he and we have paid the price for it for the last few years. Not saying that's the only thing he's done wrong during that time, but I do think that was a part of it.

Stans already had Sharpe on the team then we signed Goodridge, Houston, Rimmer, Delk1, Delk2 and J-Money. Stans let J-Money run the show and the next year we signed Hansbrough. We lost all those players except for J-Money, I find it very interesting that everyone but J-money left the team for one reason or another, he was the reason. Stans had no offensive game-plan except for J-Money to showboat and it really hurt our team for several years. In fact, I think we are just now recovering from it.

I don't think Jmoney ran off Houston, Sharpe, or Goodridge; but I do think he ran off the Delks and Hans. I also agree that he let J-Money take over too much. When we lost to SIU out west in that tournament, I think Jamont had over 50% of the shots and he and Rhodes combined had over 80%.

I also agree that we are just now recovering from that as Ravern and Kodi had delusions of being the next Jamont.
