As someone who is about to move back to Jackson and wants to live in the city limits, I would love to see this arena get built. I dont think just because the <span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;">city</span></span></span></span></span><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span></span></span></span></span>is shrinking, the arena wouldn't be feasible. The people leaving Jackson are moving to the suburbs. The events that the arena could bring in would be big enough to convince people make the 10 mile journey from Madison/Ridgeland/Flowood/Brandon/Raymond to see them.

People's flight to the suburbs is understandable - especially those with kids/family. However, they are propounding the problem (not blaming them). The suburbs of Jackson could do nothing but benefit from a healthy, rejuvenated Jackson.

There are many who do not see that a vibrant capital of the +*@#@#@ state plays a big part in economic development. Not just for the metro area but the whole state. People in the suburbs would rather ***** about how ****** Jackson is and how there are no events than support something like this. Symptomatic of why and how Mississippi remains at the bottom.

until the police in Jackson have their *** handed to them and clean up their act, nothing in Jackson will change. I personally have dealt with the Jackson Police Department and one of the suburb police departments. It was the exact same crime and the difference in response was amazing. Jackson should be ashamed of what they have allowed the police force to dissolve into and until they fix it, they will not have any type of turnaround.

Alot of great people on the steering committee. Glad to see they are doing what they are doing.

Downtown Jackson has alot going on right now, & there is alot of interest. There are also alot of community groups keeping the pressure on JPD & other city officials (i,e fondren, downtown Jackson partners, etc.)

you know, some people want to live in the city, & some want to live in a suburb & since I have experienced property crime in both the city & a suburb of Jackson, my take is that the suburb pd's do a better job of not broadcasting the crime.....& that is not to say that Jackson does not have alot of crime, we do......but there is some pretty bad crime occurring outside of Jackson also.

And as a resident of the great city of Jackson, anything you want to say about Kenny Stokes is fine by me

The city of Jackson suffers from a bad case of diar...I mean piss poor leadership......

..it's actually the people living in the suburbs of Jackson who're causing all the problems. Informative.

and we lived in fear of the end of Daylight Savings Time because it meant we would be leaving work in the dark. The companies down there have to make special security arrangements for female workers to get them to their cars. I'm not going into Downtown Jackson at night by myself and I'm sure as hell not bringing a woman or kids with me. They would have to massively clean-up that downtown area to get people back down there.

Well here is the root of the problem

Jackson Police Department:

Salary

<span style="text-decoration:underline">Police Recruit</span> - $23,750.00 (Annually), after successful completion of a 14-week training program.

$28,887.00 (annually), after <span style="text-decoration:underline">one year</span> of employment.

Memphis Police Department:

<span style="text-decoration:underline">Police Recruit</span>
Hourly Monthly Annually
Training $17.72 $3,072.09 $36,866.18

<span style="text-decoration:underline">Police Officer</span>
Hourly Monthly Annually
Probationary $18.96 $3,286.39 $39,436.80
1-2 Years $21.08 $3,654.45 $43,854.72
2-3 Years $22.67 $3,930.17 $47,163.48
3 Years + $24.78 $4,294.63 $51,537.20

A police officer in training makes $8k a year more than a 1 year veteran in Jackson metro. After 1 year of service, the pay differential is almost $15k a year. I can promise you with stellar salary for JPD, the best and brightest are heading elsewhere. If Jackson wants to get serious about crime, they will find a way to get serious about paying police officers.

From the city council on down. I would like to know the comparison of the JPD salary vs the suburbs police dept. I would imagine there is not a ton of difference. I know half the people on the committee and think a lot of most of them and what they are trying to do.

Many are of the opinion if you build new apartments and complexes that it will fix the cities problem when it doesn't touch the problem. The city council is a bunch of jackasses and the police department is pathetic.

If you have ever called upon the law enforcement in Rankin county and the Jackson PD, the contrast between the two is so evident one is left to ponder if JPD actually requires any formal training. People in the suburbs want Jackson to succeed, you can't blame them for doing what is best for their family's well being. Many of them who work in the big three hospitals and for state government agencies would live in the city limits to save gas if they could. Maybe one day...
