Arizona State didn't practice very well

Does West Point pay players, beyond the normal cadet stipend? If not, I suppose it's understandable why he'd leave the Academy but not really dedicated to a military career.

No idea on this guys situation but my understanding with the transfer portal is if they transfer before their senior year they don’t have to fulfill the mandatory service requirement afterward. I remember that being part of the reason Paul Skenes transferred from Air Force. Feel like this is common for anyone at the academies who may have a chance at a pro sports career, they don’t necessarily want to delay it for military service.

David Robinson was a rare breed in that regard.

ASU had a 30-3 lead on us before some garbage time scores. That game was nowhere near as close as the final score.
I’m just not that high on them. I think they are overrated I would not be surprised if we play them close

No we didn’t. We played 6 in the box most of the game. But Arizona State is a playoff team returning 17 starters. Anyone thinking we’re winning this game is delusional.
^^^ This. We kept playing 3 down linemen. Refused to make them pass. And even then, we lined up leaving wide open gaps. Abysmal defensive coaching.

To those saying we can’t beat Arizona State:

They beat us by seven in Tempe last season.

They were a surprise CFP team last year. It’s possible they take a step back.

We were 2-10 last year. It’s possible we are better.

State beating Arizona State in Starkville is on the menu. It’s not guaranteed, but it is definitely one of the possible outcomes.

Despite Skaterbro running over us most of the night, that game was a lot closer than most remember. Hell, despite getting dragged in the first half, we only lost by 7. We were one questionable turnover by Shapen early and a failed defensive stop late from winning the game.
The difference is Arizona State continually got better and better as the season went along. That's a sign of good coaching. We pretty much stunk the entire season. Other than UMASS, we got beat by double digits in every game after Arizona State. Week 2 is gonna be a huge challenge for us.

A win is a possibility = sunshine ?

I would argue saying a win is not possible is doom and gloom.

If you’re looking for irrationality, it’s the camp that is locked into one possible outcome in July.

A win is possible if we are much improved and if they don’t play well. But I do think our fans are a little optimistic about our chances just based off the fact that we were competitive with them for about a quarter at the end of the game in Tempe last year.

Skattebo was awesome but they were far from a one man team, and they return a bunch other than him. They had one of the best freshman QB-WR duos in the country last year and a Top 40 defense.

I get the sense our fans kinda see them as a random Big 12 team that’s not that much different than us. I see a team that won their conference championship game by 26 and was one 4th and long stop away from winning a playoff game. Whereas we may be improved but we haven’t really been in many competitive games the last two years so a win against a team like ASU would be a bigger leap for us than many realize.

I don’t consider 0-8 in the sec respectable. I can’t come up with an sec win but it’s possible someone has a rash of injuries
Tennessee is beatable. They lost a lot. Missouri is beatable this year. They also lost a lot. The Egg Bowl is always a toss up, and it's in Starkville this year. Other than that, I don't see anyone else we'll compete with.

Don’t forget about Chad Hennings. All American and Outland trophy winner from Air Force. Drafted by the Cowboys, became an A-10 pilot then played 9 years with the Cowboys and won 3 Super Bowls.

We made it look close after they took their foot off the gas. Our defense was atrocious that game, and the scheme was among the worst I've ever seen. Their QB was green, but he had wide open WRs every time they called a pass. The run defense was a joke. Unless our supposed defensive coordinator has made wholesale changes to his "scheming" AND we've gotten 3x better on the DL and in the secondary, then we should expect a similar result this year.

Their QB at the end of the season was waaaay better than he was when we saw him. I wouldn't expect him to keep us in the game this year by missing reads and making terrible throws.

I‘m actually really high on Dillingham and think ASU will be doing well to hang onto him, even if he is an alum. Yeah they lost Skattebo but they replaced him with an 1,000 yard rusher from Army. Also, we saw their QB on his worst day last year, he went on to have a very nice season and was only a freshman last year. 24-6 TD to INT ratio and threw for just under 3,000 yards. They lost two regular season games last year and one of them was on the road in a game where Leavitt didn’t play due to injury.

Is it totally impossible that we can upset them? No I don’t think so. But we will absolutely be the underdog. They won the Big 12 and probably should’ve beaten Texas in the Playoff, and didn’t lose much other than their RB who they seem to have replaced reasonably well.
They are a better team with more returning proven talent. We'll be underdogs, but no one really knows what we have.
I don’t think he is losing any of the other three non-cons. Beat Arizona State and we could have a respectable season.
It's the key to the season. I don't see us beating ASU, but it's possible.

Anyone that thinks State winning a game outside of USM, Alcorn, or NIU is very optimistic. I would consider any other win an upset victory. I've never seen a poorer team that last year's team. If they are twice as good as last year they might win five.

I said the same thing on another message board about a month ago but I really had not looked that closely at ASU. ASU is on the level or better than most of our SEC schedule. TX and GA are the only two that I think are head and shoulders better than them.

If State can beat ASU or at least be right there with them, State can win an SEC game or two.

he won’t get fired for losing to Arizona State. Massive games for him are southern miss & northern Illinois. Lose one of those & he’s toast.
It's massive for him, full stop. It's the one game that will tell us if we're improved or not. It's a harbinger for the season.

We couldn't even line up correctly against them last year.

I don’t agree necessarily asu is better than ole miss. I don’t think they could beat arkansas
ASU is extremely overrated. They benefitted from early momentum and a very easy schedule last year. Hell, we should have beaten them.

They are very well coached and that can mask a lot of things. But it's pretty absurd to think we can't win this game.

Day two of practice, typical coach-speak sandbagging and motivate players in the process. I bet Nick Saban never had 3 good practices in his entire coaching career.

Patdog, how full are you from eating all that crow? You're probably happily eating it, but you can't be done.
