BUT when you think about it this is actually pretty consistent with what we`ve seen from the Slive regime as a whole.

There was a similar article on the sports pages of the Huntsville Times yesterday, by Skarbinski. May have been the same writeup. Presumably it's on al.com also. He didn't pull any punches about the inconsistency.

He missed the pile drive by the Bama defensive player in the Missouri game. Apparently only defensive players on some teams get suspended for these hits.

the video didn't show him "leading with the crown of the helmet", so the only thing I can figure is that maybe a "Defender/Tackler" can't be considered a "defenseless" player...

i dunno... definitely should have been flagged for unec roughness, though....

Murray may have been a defender on that play due to the INT...

but in no way was he making any real attempt to be a tackler. Dial just saw a chance to take a shot on the QB and took it which would have been fine if he hadn't cold cocked him in the head. Rarely will you see a guy getting blocked that takes that kind of shot to the head so you can talk "leading with the helmet" all you want but the helmet to helmet WAS what made first contact on the play and it was pretty vicious. Seriously, if that play didn't warrant a suspension then let's just formally do away with league office suspensions on illegally administered hits altogether and just have a formal league wide apology letter writing campaign established on the issue. Saban can disperse the format to everyone since he's gotten so well versed on it this year.

it's splitting hairs on exactly what hit AM first,,, shoulder, forearm, etc... in super duper slo-mo it looked like it was head/forearm then AM's head recoils.... into Dial's...

Regardless, it was nasty and he should have been flagged... and I wouldn't have flaked out even if he were suspended...

additionally, AM should learn to better "not make an attempt to tackle", at least til he gets to the NFL....

Not to mention the 5 or so illegal hits that Nick Fairley took on Murray in the UGA-Auburn game 2 years ago. The SEC office is very concerned with player safety as long as it doesn't get in the way of those national championship dollars. Hypocrites

The only real answer to this issue is for the NCAA to take control of handling these suspensions. The conference offices have too much of a vested interest and just not suspending players is not going to be an option in the future. The liability issues the NFL is beginning to face are going to trickle down to the NCAA and if they're smart they'll get ready for it now instead of waiting until then.
