If Jackson builds a new $100 million arena to host the state basketball tournament and a handful of other events, they are crazier than I think they are.

their wallet stolen, to be stabbed, shot, beaten, have their shoes taken, etc? No thanks, I'm not a thug drug dealer. I'll stay in Rankin County where it's safe.

I think it's a good idea. IF...they are going to let go of that ridiculous no-alcohol sales and hire someone who knows how to really market the thing and recruit events for it. The only way downtown Jackson is going to get better is for what it has to offer to get better and this would help.

Jackson needs it, bad. Really bad. Tupelo consistently gets more and better concerts than Jackson because they have a decent arena. What Tupelo is doing is the tip of the iceburg for an arena in Jackson.

Heck, we'd still have minor league hockey (Berrnie conviction withstanding) if we had a real arena.

And yes the state must stay the heck out of it with their arcane laws and regulations for state-owned property. The deal should be constructed like the hugely successful convention center. Its one of those pseudo public-private things. The concessions are decent and they serve alcohol.

Don't worry about crime. Crime hasn't been an issue at the convention center. Mostly what's needed to combat crime are large crowds of paying customers. The sheer number of decent people is enough to keep the gang bangers from causing trouble. Works in other cities like Dallas and it will work here too.

I think that they will try to get bigger events that come to Memphis/NOLA and they might have a little success, but its Jackson. I worked with someone who works with the new convention center in Jackson - they are losing their *** because they are basically getting local and state events. They'll go to these meetings trying to lure conventions and this is the common response:

(1) We're not coming to Mississippi. (e.g. stereotyping or its difficult or expensive to get to JAN)
(2) Are there casinos within walking distance?

Whether we like to admit it or not - Jackson and Mississippi aren't high on the list of potential venues for Tier 1 concerts, sporting events, professional sports franchises, etc. We are also not high on the list of terrorist targets.

Jackson can be at least as good as Tupelo, which is light years ahead of where we are now.

versus getting concerts, sporting events, etc which are one night events are completely different animals. ****, there is only a few restaurants opened downtown at night. It's going to be more difficult to get conventions to come but an arena would be ideal.

Jackson's problem isn't crime, horrible infrastructure, a dying downtown - its the local politics that contribute to all of that.

unless if they're going to build it, put all the Katrina immigrants in it, then shut it and lock it.

They just reelected a mayor they voted out of office 4 years ago for being very ineffective. As long as Jackson does stupid stuff like that, you just know the city isn't going to turn the corner. You are correct, it isn't crime, it's terrible leadership and absolute stupidity.

tax dollars should not be spent on sports facilities. Not really the public's interest, and they usually end up costing more in the long ran than any revenue they bring in. If there is a demand for it, a private entity should build it.

I think it would be great as long as it were someplace other than Jackson.

Those of us that endured the Saints pre-season game a few years back know how totally incapable Jackson is in hosting large events. That was a sporting debacle rather than a sporting event.

...but he's also the mayor responsible for the Convention Center, so he gets kudos from me.

...as far as actually getting in the stadium is concerned once parked, I think that blame goes to the stadium folks. Traffic can be bad at the stadium even when leaving it after high school championship games, which is why one always takes the roads less traveled when going to and from the stadium (don't get on State, don't get on Woodrow Wilson east of the stadium).

A lot of associations & organizations in Mississippi haven't been meeting in Jackson for years because Jackson had no decent conference facility. There will be local organizations using the facility, and it's large enough that it can accomodate more than one conference at a time. I wouldn't be surprised if regional organizations used it too-- it's certainly large enough.

without the support of some form of a consistent sport in an arean (which I dont believe could happen anyway) an arena will be useless there. Downtown is stupid. Better chance building out in Pearl near the Braves park.

Without new "events" its a waste

I think it would be great for the city and the rest of the metro area, Rankin county included. Harvey Johnson got us the Convention Center now go get us a new arena.

Obviously putting every absurdity people throw at downtown Jackson on a regular basis in the post and also including this "/typical response" went unnoticed by some.</p>

When i watched us lose to USM in pearl this past season it took two hours to get to the parking lot because they have a one lane road from the interstate to the stadium. BRILLIANT!
It took two hours to get a hot dog because they had RE-RE's working the concession.
Their is entirely to much ignorance in the Metro area for this to work. Starkville, for a tiny town can handle 50,000 fans regularly. Jackson can't handle the twenty thousand that go to the JSU game.
The last thing Jackson citizens need is to pay more money that they don't have for a stadium that they cant afford to use.
If the tickets were free it would be a success because then people would actually go but then they wouldn't make any money its a lose lose situation.
