I don't blame Saban because he's just doing what the rules allow (and what a lot of other coaches do). But if you sign a player in February, you ought to be required to have a scholarship for him in August. And there needs to be a drop-dead date in April/May when you have to commit to having a scholarship for the next year for your current players to give them time to find a transfer if they are cut (and if they're cut without cause, the 1-year transfer rule needs to be automatically waived).

don't seem to have a problem with it. I find it a little odd that they chose him since he and the family seem to be agreeable to the situation.

One thing about the greyshirting thing that I find odd is that it really only seems to apply to football. You never hear about a baseball or basketball player getting greyshirted.

instead of just one semester. It's actually almost a benefit for a marginal signee. He gets the benefits of a redshirt year without having to use a redshirt, and effectively gets 6 years to play 4.

The best thing about that article was the comments at the bottom. Its 10 times worse than the things people put on Veazey's blog</p>

Just wait 'til next year. Bama only has nine seniors on scholarship. Add in a couple of Juniors that go early to the NFL, subtract normal attritionand sutract the three grayshirts for next year and Bama will only have ~ 10 -12 spaces for next year. Saban has 16 verbals already and is not slowing recruiting in the least. This could be interesting resembling gladiator face-offs in the ring ot see 'who' gets a slot and who dies in the dust.

Unless you're just way short on scholarships to give, anybody who grayshirts is going to be about the 26th best player in your signing class at best. And anyone grayshirting counts against the next year's limit. So you can only sign 24 upcoming high school seniors. It's a good method of last resort to keep a promise to somebody that they'll get on scholarship, but if I were running a team, I'd want to grayshirt as few people as possible.
