but Rivals has him rated the #3 "dual-threat" QB in the nation. I just assume he can run based on that. I have not checked how scout has him rated, or if they even divide their QBs into categories. Maybe the injury Fresno Bob mentioned slowed him down a bit.

At the first of last season, Relf was not a first string QB option for us Lee was what he was and I am certain Russell was not ready to throw into the fire as a true freshman SEC QB. You need to be walk on water special to go QB as a freshman in the SEC. It only made good sense to me for Coach Mullen to red shirt him and work through his first year with the Dogs as best as he could with the two QBs he had back in September.

I certainly knew that he did not offer a scholly to either one of them, and probably would not have if he had been in Starkville when they came to MSU. He inherited both of those guys from Croom, who had his own set of problems to deal with. In my opinion, surely the MSU-money guys told him when he came to Starkville that it would be ok to go with what Croom left him and do the best he could his first year. I am not Mullen, but if I was I would have done exactly what he did last year.

Disclaimer, I am not a 'money guy' and I doubt anyone else here is, or that any of us know what demands the money-guys made from Coach Mullen last year - except for that one guy who dated the roommate of that girl whose uncle was a big Dawgs supporter back in Jackie's day.

I bet Coach Mullen was happy when Russell started coming on as a good player, because he was offered a scholy with the belief by everyone around the state that he was a prime candidate for MSU's future (or the other schools who showed interest). Looking back, the good thing I see about him is that he wanted to be here, he came from a winning program, he was Mr. Football and Meridian beat lots of good HS teams with him at QB and he ran and threw better than anyone in the state while he was in HS and all that good stuff. If it helps, I know the family and his mommie loves him lots. His dog does, too. That must count for something.

I bet Mullen is at least somewhat satisfied these days that Lee is gone, that Relf is considerably better than he was at the first of last year and that Russell looks at this point like he will be the real deal for us for the next four years. (OK, I bet he's jumping up and down with joy that Lee is gone).

We could certainly use another good QB, because any QB can end their season/career on any play. Who knows, maybe Farve will grow two inches this summer. Anyone know where they sell that Human Growth Hormone stuff?

I remain hopeful that next year will be a bowl year for us. That will be OK. Heck, I'd happily go to Shreveport, LA in the snow to watch the Dogs play. I am somewhat hopeful that we can convince someone to give us a Jan 1 game shot. The truth is, I'd pick cotton with the dogs and take any harassment that came from Oxford way with the Dogs being selected to go to Dallas next year. I also happen to think that a Jan 1 bowl date is a definite possibility, even with the horses we have to ride at this point.

happens to be a guy that is part of the football practices. Here is my understanding:

Russell had two problems, he was not looking great at SEC speed at the beginning of the year and he had never lifted weights properly which left his core muscles (chest and abs) under-developed. The coaches felt that he wasn't ready for 1A at the beginning of the year and he ran a real chance of getting injured because of conditioning. Halfway through the season he clicked. He started understanding the speed, he started reading the defense, and he was working out like a fiend. At that point Mullen just didn't want to burn the redshirt, plus they still feel an off season of good conditioning would help protect him. From what I am told Russell is a great kid and he worked his *** off this year without complaint and always practiced like the starting QB.

On a side note, this same guy thinks that Newton didn't come to MSU because Mullen would not guarantee him the starting job and Auburn did. This is what a guy I know thinks so take that for what it's worth.
