Living in Jacksonville, I'm obviously hearing a lot from the local media about how they perceive Miss. State. For example, this article today

http://jacksonville.com/s...ns-are-revved-gator-bowl

Essentially, I came away with the impression that we're small, we like cowbells and we castrate bulls. We're just so happy to be invited to the Gator Bowl, it's the most amazing thing that's ever happened to us.

Obviously, there's more to us, but you can't really blame an outsider for not knowing that.

So, it got me thinking: Which other school is most 'like' State in terms of national perception. In other words, if I wanted to understand how others see us, I should just remember how I see __________.

Thinking about it, I think we're most like Iowa State.

Small school from a small state in a Big Conference full of successful teams. Their instate rival, U of Iowa (like U of Mississippi) of has a bigger national reputation, although there's not much recent history for it to be deserved. No consistent success in football, although we've had much more memorable runs of success and personalities associated with it (JWS). We're both known for sports that haven't always been nationally relevant in college (wrestling and baseball). I would guess our fan bases are equally as passionate about their teams, but that just doesn't translate to the outside.

BTW, I find this thought depressing.

What do you think?

I think you missed with Iowa State. If you are picking a Big 12 team, go with Kansas State. They had a miserable time of it before Bill Snyder arrived, but he was their Jackie Sherrill that woke up the program and they continue to have an occassional good season in his 2nd tenure ascoach. Basketball also has become something to talk aboutunder Frank Martin and he is doing about like Stansbury did with some of his early teams thatwere nationally ranked. Fellow A&M school, hasa university president with MSU ties, and is quite difficult for the rest of the world to get to. Pretty close to MSU if considering it from a national perspective and not near as depressing the words Iowa State.

Nice. I considered them but then decided against them simply because they really ARE the 'little brother', having to deal with KU's basketball success. (Thank God) Mississippi doesn't have anything comparable to rub in our faces. Otherwise I completely agree. Their football success was a tad higher and longer than ours, but then they went back to complete suckdom as we did after JWS.

Kansas State and Iowa State do really different things to my psyche, but I could see it either way.<div>
</div><div>I was kind of thinking about this earlier this year, and came up with names like Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State. Last two are kind of a stretch, but so is saying we're not as known as, say, Colorado State.</div>
