Ask Sixpack: Do y'all view Alabama the same Ole Miss does LSU?

In that most Ole Miss fans seem to hate LSU more than any other school (taking State out of the equation) for whatever reasons. I know there is a strong dislike towards Alabama as well but history and tradition seems to tip the scale in LSU's direction.

So, taking Ole Miss out, does State hate Alabama more than LSU or any other SEC school?

I actually grew up a huge Alabama fan. They were my team until about my Junior year in high school. So because of that, I simply don't loathe them they way some other STATE fans do. Ole Miss, on the other hand, they're the bane of my existence.

No doubt MSU fans hate Bama second to Mississippi, with LSU third. But the MSU-Bama game isn't a true "rivalry" game like the UM-LSU game is. Some MSU fans like to claim that Bama is our real rival, but they're full of ****. They also forget that in the late 1980's we had successfully petitioned the SEC to remove Bama from our permanent opponents and make them a rotating opponent. We were scheduled to drop them and replace them with Kentucky in 1991. Of course, in the meantime the SEC expanded and we wound up never missing a season of playing Bama. But that's the reason Kentucky became our permanent opponent in the East even though we had only played them on a rotating basis before then.

I like and dislike the other SEC universities pretty much equally.

Edit to add: I've got cousins who are Alabama fans-- they didn't attend the school but they love the Tide, and they're good people, so I don't have any ill will towards Alabama. </p>

but some State fans that I know hate Bama as much/more than Ole Miss. Ole Miss is probably the only team that I openly cheer against each and every week.

edit to add: I probably dislike Arkansas more than Bama.

I'd say, yes, your typical MSU fan hates Alabama as much as the typical OM fan hates LSU. But, MSU doesn't have a portion of the fan base naive enough to think Alabama is our "real" rival. Every year around the LSU/OM game, I hear rumblings of "LSU is our true rival" from the OM fanbase. It's either naivety or lame attempts to degrade MSU as "unworthy" of being OM's rival. Either way, it makes those fans look pretty ridiculous.

A win over Alabama is viewed as something bigger than a win over Ole Miss. Granted, we want to beat Ole Miss more than we do Alabama, but wins over Alabama are much harder to come by. They are the closest school by location, but farthest in terms of school culture. We have more in common with every other SECW school.

I don't know how most OM fans view LSU. However, most State fans I know hate Alabama. Alot of it stems from the close proximity of the schools.....obviously. I don't want to get into a real rival arguement but I hated them more than OM for many years.

much the same reason I despise deep sea fishing equipment fashion. Everybody jumps on the bandwagon to be cool but very few actually have any knowledge of the stuff.

In other words I despise them because everytime I take my car to the mechanic in south mississippi I hear roll tide at least five times

I would rather Ole Miss win 10 straight national championships than Alabama have a winning season. I hate those sons of bitches.

I did grow up among them. I hate them.

the way OM looks at LSU. The combination of smugness and ignorance within their fan base is particularly irritating.

I moved to Alabama a little over a year ago and my dislike for that university has grown tremendously since then. Prior the the success that they had last season, they were the most obnoxious fans on the face of the earth without any justification at all. I know most people say that LSU has terrible fans but my argument there is that if State won two national championships in football, a baseball national championship, and a final four appearance within 5 years, then hell yes I would be obnoxious too. Omitting last year, Alabama hadn't done much of anything since the Gene Stallings era 15 years ago.

Also, most of these UAT fans where I live haven't even been to Tuscaloosa before. I understand that there are reasons that people did not attend a certain university, but if you consider yourself a "huge fan" then I have a hard time understanding how you have never been to one single game in Tuscaloosa or been to campus for that matter. It blows my mind.

Their sense of entitlement along with the throngs of sidewalk alumni makes me sick. I don't know of a school that can boast more fans that have absolutely nothing to do with the school other that being born in the state. I can't stand 'em.

On a side note, I'm glad somebody shares my disdain for this trend. Obviously acceptable in areas in close proximity to the ocean. But sporting the latest turquoise fishing shirt at a bar at 10PM 200 miles inland on a Tuesday night? You aren't fooling anyone, buddy. Nobody believes you just stepped off the Boston Whaler. You just look like a douche.

I think Alabama sucks incredibly bad and I do hate them 2nd to Ole Miss. Do I view Alabama as a rival? No. I get that with the creation of the Magnolia Bowl, Ole Miss is trying to make the UM/LSU rivalry "official," but I will always view LSU/Arkansas as the real rivalry.

Their fans are obnoxious, ignorant, and hopelessly stuck in the past. Their worship of coaches is ridiculous. The fact that people not yet born when Bear Bryant coached his last game wear those stupid houndstooth hats to games says it all.</p>

About a month ago, a friend of mine on Facebook (an actual Alabama graduate) posted this status update.

Took lunch break and walked to the Bear's gravesite. I felt his presence.

Dude is 28 years old.

Bama doesn't bother me, but I loathe all things LSU. Their fans are the worst, going to a game down there is dangerous, their bandwagon is currently overflowing, and Coach34 is in love with them. What isn't there to HATE about LSU?

I get that he was a great coach that had a load of success. I get that he's a legend and that he was larger than life. All those things are noted. However, he was the coach of a football team. Some people desperately need to get some perspective on life.

On a side note: who was the poster that told the story of the little boy at halloween asking his father why a fellow student dressed up like a dead football coach?

into two groups, Ole Miss and everyone else. Of Group B, LSU is my main hated rival, but I think that's due to my family situation. I've never had a run-in with any Bama fans, and from the time I began at State to now, we've had a decent amount of success against them. I definitely don't view them the way you guys do LSU.

I have a deep hatred for Alabama, mainly because of the years prior to Saban where through mediocre seasons they held to the years of Bryant. Alabama fans are usually super cocky and a great deal of them didn't even attend the university. I do have some dear friends that are Alabama fans and we are still really good friends. The hatred is just in the rivalry, not in life. Greatest day of my college career was the Anthony Johnson pick 6 and win over Alabama in 2007.</p>

Personally,

I grew up an Alabama fan and am still an Alabama fan (lived in Alabama). I went to school at MSU because of a certain program that was not offered at Bama. Therefore I do not agree with some arguments I hear about people not going to school where they are fans. I went to school to get an education, not to cheer for my favorite team. I am a fan of both schools, but will always cheer for Bama. My wife is exactly opposite. She is diehard Bulldog, but also cheers for Bama when they are not playing State. We still go to Tuscaloosa at least once a year and sometimes more if State plays there that particular year.

I would agree that alot of Bama fans can be very obnoxious, live in the past, and such. But there are also fans that are realistic and sane. I have friends that belong in both categories. Its a classic case of the "cant see the good for the bad". I will be the first to make fun of the redneck Alabama fan as well as any other school. I guess I just like to make fun of rednecks in general. And I will oppose any unrealistic, idiotic statement that a Bama fan tries to make. But I also remember a lot of State fans talking about contending for the West last year. Bama hasnt won a NT in 17 years and hasnt won an SECT in 11 years. They have a lot to do before they deserve to be a national power again, but they are on their way. And if they get there, the fans will have every right to brag about what their team has done.

Bama fans wearing Houndstooth hats has become a trend, but is more of a tradition. Its nothing different than State fans ringing cowbells. How many people were around when the cowbell became a tradition at MSU?

The team I loathe the most is Auburn, but Ole Miss is right up there since I have been to State and now live back in MS because of my wife.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">I know many LSU alumni and I never hear them say anything about Ole Miss except them agreeing with me that most of their fan base is blind pricks that are very much like Alabama fans in the fact that they live in the past. As much as I hate Ole Miss and Alabama and despise both fan bases, at lest Alabama does have a winning tradition.

I think Ole Miss Fans make more out of the Ole Miss and LSU game then LSU fans. It just another game to the average LSU fan and I think many Miss State fans makes more out of the Alabama game then the Alabama fan does. However with the recent victory ratio over the past 14 or so years, some of the Alabama people do look toward the MSU game. After all I think they are embarrassed about the win lost ratio to Miss State over the past 13 to 14 years. "How dare we lose to a school like Miss State?"<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span> They are really offended.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span> Not because they view us as a rival but because of their arrogant prick way they look down on us.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"></p>

I was watching the UM-Bama replay on CBS College the other night and, just like last year, I was hoping through some mirable both teams would lose. I despise Bama at least on the same level as UM and probably more but I could not stand the thought of them winning. Period.

Having lived in Mobile, Alabama for 7 years I have been immersed in all things Bama. It is a stench I will never get rid of, no matter how long I live, and one that goes well beyond just the football program. I've had South Alabama grads who were Bama fans ask me why I was a MSU fan. I've had high school seniors talk dorm smack to me. I've had friends who are otherwise good people make fun of the "educational standards" of MSU and Auburn- when they themselves never attended ANY University, not just Alabama.
