Assuming Sidney comes, what is his impact?

Dontae Jones' impact. The only real difference is that they play different positions. Even if he does not make it in we will still be a very good team. However he is the x-factor...the player that is an impossible matchup to defend and can completely take over a game if he wants. Further I think it will be about halfway through the season before he "gets it" regarding playing team ball and defense.

strong personalities on this team and although he may be the most talented player he will not be the best player. Additionally he is already friends with some of the players.

I don't think we have a bunch of real strong personalities. In fact, that was one of Stansbury's criticisms of the team last year is that no one just jumped up as a leader and that we had a very laid back bunch. Toward the end of the season Phil Turner kind of filled that role but I think you will see Bost really take over as the leader this season.

but one thing is for sure ...we've never placed anybody on the court with these type of game changing skills.. when your 6-10 and can shoot 3's, pass and dribble?.... you kiddin'? him and varnado on the floor at the same time? ****......

anybody who says things like "he'll do more harm than good causing internal problems" needs their heads examined....you NEVER pass on a guy that brings that much to the table... with his offensive skills, he would be more valuable than dampier.. and I hate to say that because damp gave us so much on that ride to the garden

would it be an automatic to the final 4?..hell no.. but I have no doubt it would give us a legit thing to discuss.... it makes our chances getting there go from not likely to "who knows?"

think about what it would do to our bench. I'm going to go ahead and assume that Dee is the PG and Barry is the SG, but then you maybe put Augustus at the 3, and while his defense may be lacking, that's going to be a tough matchup for most other teams there to. Having Sidney at the four would allow us to put Osby, Ravern, and Phil all on the bench. Those are all pretty solid players.

If Sidney doesn't get in, then you're looking at starting either Augustus or Osby at the four, which is not bad, and then maybe Phil or Ravern at the three.

And like you said, I think the thing that sets Sidney apart is he can shoot the three. If we can get Sidney, I think it will help Varnado the most because he's going to have some help to get rebounds. Last year it was always two on one as far as getting rebounds because we didn't have a true PF. Sidney also will help Varnado score more, because it will mean fewer double teams. It will allow him to be even more aggressive as far as blocking shots because we have more depth in the middle.

I think he starts at the 4 with Varnado at the 5, Johnson at the 3, Stewart at the 2 and Bost at the 1. That leaves a very strong bench of Turner 2, Osby 3, Augustus 4 and either Riek or Bailey at 5. From the reports of Riek's workouts to date and with Bailey slowed by the ankle I wouldn't be surprised to see Riek get more minutes than first expected. The rest I think get spot duty or redshirt (in the case of Lewis and possibly Smith). With our depth I could see Turner getting more minutes bringing the ball up if Beckham continues to struggle with his ballhandling.

Great point Hammu on the personalities. I do rememeber that now. However by the end of the year, especially in the tourney run, several individuals had really stepped up into the leadership roles especially Stewart, Turner and Bost.

No way Turner comes off the bench-he was the engine that come the team going forward when things got tough. His leadership on the court is a must. Period.

he can come in for whoever struggles to start the game, because he can play positions 2-4. he brings energy and athleticism and an attitude. he can come off the bench and still get his minutes - think jason terry.

I think the world of Phil and would bench all the others before him (minus Jarvis). Why? Because even though he played out of position and was always undersized, he played with enough passion and intensity to beat his opponent. He was crucial in a lot of our wins last year; I don't think we would have beat Tennessee without him and he started the smashing of Kentucky @ their house. He was the guy who would take the shot when nobody else would (even if it sometimes was from way behind the line) and really motivated our team. I hope to see him on the court a lot next year.

and play alot. However he will not start over Stewart and Bost. If Coach Stansbury wants to play with a traditional PF and C then he would not start at the 4 or 5. That only leaves the 3. I still think Johnson draws the start there but that Turner gets alot of minutes and will be on the floor at the end of games. I also agree that he would be great energy off the bench and that he may have to help out some at the point or at least in bringing the ball up when Bost is resting. At the end of close games I think it will be Bost, Turner, Stewart, Varnado and whoever else steps up.

Phil may be my favorite player on this team. He brings such intensity to the game when he is on the floor. It is amazing to me how many different types of looks we will be able to play next year. We will be able to go big and we will be able to go small.
Can you imagine: Jarvis at the 5, Sidney at the 4, Augustus playing the 3, Stewart at the 2 and Dee running point with Phil, Romero, Riek and Bailey coming off the bench. Where do Smith and Lewis fit into this equation?
What other team in the country returns the depth and experience we do and places two starters from last year on the bench...
This next year is so important to us from a recruiting standpoint as well. In 2011, Mississippi will produce its best class of basketball prospects EVER. It looks like we may have 5-6 spots to fill with that class...
I am trying not to get too excited about this, but it is damn hard not to be.

ever played the 3 spot for us? I am curious to why people want to place him there. I don't remember him ever being put in that position. I would think the 3 would be manned by Johnson and Osby like it was toward the end of last year with Turner thrown in at the end of games.

Kodi is alot bigger than many realize. He is not a very good ball handler even thought he is a good shooter. I just don't see him at small forward other than for occasional stints. Plus most opposing teams' small forwards will be much quicker for Kodi to have to guard. I do think Kodi will make a hell of a power forward that can draw out the defense.

he's then out until the last week of the season. Plays sparingly, at 60%, the rest of the way.

Immediately after the final game, he announces he's going pro.

He then leaves campus to concentrate on getting back in basketball shape and is drafted in late 2nd round.

Several years later, stories (of MSU students actually seeing him on campus during the Aug. 2009 - March 2010 time period) begin to circulate. Many people come to regard these stories as tall tales generated by current and former students only wanting to draw attention to themeselves. Even when folks present photographic evidence of Sidney on campus, they are scoffed at with accompanying accusations of "You're really good at Photoshop!"

We are MSU.

Tho he's supposed to be even better than Erick. I don't think we'll get him, but if we do, I think he'll make a huge contribution and play with us for two incredible seasons.

My solution is to get Phil minutes at the 2 while Stewart spells Bost (7-8 min / gm). If Ravern doesn't stop acting like a ***** or continually gets abused defensively, Phil also gets substantial min at the 3 along with Osby. 2 is Phil's natural position, I would rather he play more there, but we all know how that would go over. He was a monster to play 4 for us last year.

I suspect Coach Stans will insist on playing Beckham at the point behind Bost, continuing to play Ravern, and mess up my perfect rotation. When will he ever learn?

I like the fact that both Kodi and Sidney can hit 3's.....that should allow us to have Varnado inside with "The 4 guys running around the perimeter" patented offense, but also allow a little help on the boards if everyone comes crashing in for the rebound. We have the possibility of being very very good.

This is the line up that should be put out there with a hell of a bench to come when Stansbury is ready to do the 5 player substitution

I agree with Fish and Hatfield- Sidney and Augustus are both going to start. I think the promise of starting is the only thing that kept Augustus on campus...

I think we are going to see our coach sub in 5 at a time with Beckham, Turner, Ravern, Osby, and Riek...

Whitey and Bailey are going to get Iupe type minutes

There will be some mixing and matching due to match-ups with certain teams, but our starting 5 is going to be big

I think S. Smith gets the redshirt this year. Too many ahead of him at guard. That's just nuts...
