Assuming we make the tournament, here's a stat for the Stansbury supporters...

we always have a little work to do to get in. We should have taken care of business during the season. Now I'm hearing we need 1 to 2 wins to get in. Why do I have the feeling we will put this number to the test and do just enough or not enough. You tell them 1 win and that's all you'll get. I seriously doubt this team will even sniff the SECT finals.

Edit to say that I hope I'm wrong and they earn their way in and leave no doubt by winning.

but the bottom line is there a plenty of major conference schools that would LOVE to get into the dance even if they did have to put in a little work at the end to get there.

I think we have already sealed our fate one way or another. As was said by others yesterday...I think 95% of the field has already been set and by the time our tournament starts Thursday it will be around 99%. That last one percent will be dealing with any surprises from bad teams getting hot and winning their conference tournaments. If they selection committee waited until all (or most) of the conference tournament games were over to set that much of the field they would be pulling about 5 all nighters in a row. I don't think we play ourselves in or out in the SECT...unless we get drilled by 20+. As of now I personally think we are in and probably in as a 10-12 seed.

there have probably been at least 12 polls about this but I don't get to read every day...

I can almost guarantee the next coach at MSU won't go .500 or better in the SEC in 10 out of 11 years. As long as we're basing this on "what we want" instead of what's realistic, why not just say if we want to be a consistent Final Four team we have to go at least .900 in SEC play?

There's a whole lot of people on this board who have a very inflated view of how good our basketball program "should" be. We don't have better facilities than most of the rest of the SEC, we can't pay more money than the rest of the SEC, we have a much smaller population base than the rest of the SEC, and while Starkville is a lot better than it used to be it's still in the middle of freaking nowhere and hard to get to. And yet, we still manage to do consistently better than most of the rest of the leauge and all we need is a new coach to get us to the next level. A lot of posters seem to think the rest of the league is just idiots when it comes to basketball, even though they're very good at winning on a national level in virtually every other sport.

As for your other post about Stans cleaning house. We don't need to tell Stans to clean house. We either need to tell him to "retire" or we need to tell him what the expectations are for next season (and the next few seasons) to keep his job. He can decide whether to make any coaching changes. If we have to tell him to make changes, we'd be a lot better off just telling him to "retire."

it appears we are to be content with 0.500 ball and a whiff in the Big Dance every other year (sometimes backing in... rarely coming in "hot"... everytime just happy to be there).

I see something like Gonzaga who did nothing for a long time, and then has taken the term "mid major" to new levels. I would like more FROM our team. I would like more FOR our team. I'm not happy with being so-so. Is it better than being the laughing stock...and an "easy win", yep.

But Starkville really does suck as a colege town (in comparison) to the rest of the SEC.

Characteristic Old Fart Comment follows:

"You should have been here back in the A&M days, when the train still came through campus.A&M rocked and Old Main was a happ'ninplace back then."

we have made the tournament 7 out of the last 11 years.

I know it is what it is but we should have one more SEC tourney title and one more NCAA appearance. The rotten officials in this league cost us those two.
