I just found out that the high school my kids will go to, and the entire district for that matter, charge an activity fee for kids to participate in school sports. My middle school kid will pay $90 for three sports this year. I figured, okay, no biggie, it will help with uniform costs etc...

Well, I just happened to look at what I would have to pay for High School football in a couple of years. All costs are mandatory and are not inclusive of fundraising and sponsorships that they will hound you for...

  • $110 district activity fee per sport. Tops out at $250 for more than 2 sports.
  • $42.50 School activity fee per sport
  • $760.00 Registration fee. You do get a "spirit pack" which includes 2 season tickets, a hoodie, a tee, shorts, sweat pants, and a practice jersey.
  • $320 summer workout fee.
  • $120 for 2 tickets to the football Gala fundraiser.
$1350 each year for High School 17ing football? I'm from Texas mother17er. You give me free shìt to play football or even NIL if I am good.

Baseball is about $750, cheer is over $2000... To the school. Not extra coaching and travel. To the school

17 you, mother17ers. This is by gawd America Jack. I ain't gonna do it. I'll make a stand. I'll pay 10x that to send em to private school, run for county commissioner, and raise school board members taxes to 90% and 17em all in the áss with a split rail fence post. So if I rip my kids out of the district and send them somewhere else am I overreacting? Is anybody else seeing this shìt? 17 me I'm day drinking and it ain't going well.

I just don’t pay the “mandatory team fees”. No one has said anything so far in 2 years

What pissed me off was 3 years ago I went thru the hassle of securing a big sponsorship. 3 months later the company asked me when the booster club was going to deposit the check. They had lost it. That’s when I said screw it.

Oh, that is really rough.suoer high cost.

State law where I live says schools are not allowed to charge fees for participation and activities or athletics. That includes uniforms, costumes, cost for team equipment, etc.

That doesn’t stop programs from heavily suggesting families pay. They basically phrase it as here is the cost to participate, and then at the end how long cost list there is a disclaimer that says if someone can’t afford to pay, then they don’t have to.


With that said, as someone who has run a high school athletic program multiple years that has 65-80 players each year, it is basically impossible to do without outside funds. The school and district are not required to fund really anything beyond coaching salary. The high school booster association will from time to time pitch in for some basic equipment and or part of the cost of the uniforms. The operating budget really is coming from donations or raised funding from things like youth camps.

And the education isn't free. I will probably end up spending $250,000+ in today's dollars on that free education before I die when you account for all the property, income, sales and liquor taxes the states I have lived in take from me to fund that "free" education.

I'm a big supporter of public schools. And school sports. But when they start acting like private schools and club sports, 17 em.

And football is a 17ing birthright in this country.

Yep. My boys do basketball which isn’t quite that bad, but bad. It doesn’t come close to what we had to pay for my daughter’s show choir fees and outfits.

We pay a lot of liquor taxes. Make the sober people pay the extra. They are dead weight to society

When I was in high school band in the late 80s / early 90s we had to fund raise or pay several hundred dollars to be in band. A large portion of the bands budget came from parent volunteers working concessions during football games.

that hasn’t changed, it’s just finally caught up to sports and the kids playing them. Welcome to the party I guess.

I’ve always thought it sucked but things cost money and a school that tries to do everything won’t have money for all of it.

Oh I agree your taxes shouldn’t go to educate someone else’s child. You should educate your child with your money as you see fit.

$320 for a sumer workout fee is crazy.

Our weekly summer schedule is...
- Sunday 4-530pm middle school open gym.
- Sunday 530-9pm high school open gym with 3 different focus areas thru the night.
- Tuesday 2hour scrimmages for varsity/high level players against 2 rotating teams of 12, hosted at a local college.
- Thursday 6-830pm high school open gym focused in team play.

^ that is every week in the summer and it's free. It's open gym because we can't require girls to show during outnof season, but all do show unless it's a conflict on a given day...and it's free.

Oh, and we do a varsity/high level player 2 day team camp at Iowa State each July.
And then a 3 day program camp is run the week before the season starts, and 2 oft he days are run by a group of recent college grads.


I would love to be able to change $320 for open gyms, if it were legal here.
Ha, we would barely have anyone show though.
$120 for the 3 day team camp where they get a shirt and food, and the rest goes to the guys who run it, is a struggle to get parents to pay.

That is an indefensibe cost.
This past winter I coached a more regional volleyball club team that had 2 show choir girls. They were playing at the smaller club because their show choir schedule took up every Saturday between January 1 and mid-March, except for 1 weekend in Feb.

Their schools show choir is apparently so good, it gets a section on that school's wiki page.
There, its a damn cult that pulls you away from your family, I swear.

Show choir at the highest level, or most competitive levels, is insane. It's tough for me to see and think it's actually good.
I guess if the kids like it, cool, but damn it's insane.

Publicly funding public education helps improve society as a whole. It ensures you live in a safer, better educated, more stable, and wealthier society.
It provides upward mobility that otherwise wouldn't exist for millions of children...and that benefits society.

^ this is objectively accurate and supported by decades of data and long term studies.

between that and taxes…. You would be paying more than tuition for a semester to State.

They are the No. 1 show choir in the country. I know they are traveling to national championships in California. They have elaborate sets and pay a professional choreographer.

Show choir has a lot of expenses. Costumes, sets, production chreo payment, travel, etc.
