We have some DEs. Just gotta have a younger guy step up. Jones did look like a DE in that pic a few days back from Turner's BBQ.

Jones to DE is must now.

Will the thrill @WillColetjc Ima be red shirted this yea, one of my classes didn't transfer, word to Juco boys don't take that many weight training classes!

I really don't think this can be classified as "attrition". No one knows if this kid was even going to get PT this year. With Brown, Smith, and Jefferson holding down the DE position and the ability to move Jones out in the end sparingly, I think we are just fine. That's the beauty of depth, something we haven't had in 10+ years. I expect to see McKinney with his hand in the dirt atleast 5 plays a game also.

Benardrick McKinney in a 3 point stance? Did he ever do this last year?

New for this year, but not sure how many plays he gets. I'd imagine 5 per game is a little high.

I could see him getting 5 a game in the first 3 games. How he does in those will probably dictate how many he gets after that

I thought I read somewhere he would get a lot of work at dend because that's where he was projected in the NFL.

I want bmac to be drafted and to be drafted high. I don't want to put him in a position that helps his draft status, but weakens our defense.

By no means am I saying it will be a Titus Brown situation where we take our best linebacker and waste a year burying him in the depth chart at d end. I think he will move down in obvious pass situations.

DE is fine

Preston Smith has 1 nailed down. Both Ryan Brown and AJ Jefferson are legit and played a lot of football last season. You then have Torrey Dale and John Harris who have been around for a while as back ups. Grant Harris reported at 265 and will be at DE. I think Chris Jones will play some DE but even if he doesn't, MSU is more than alright.

I don't think that it will weaken the defense if used with discretion. I can see how it can give the D ability to use the same personnel to give the offense different looks.

I think it's more about being a 3-4 vs 4-3 LB. If he can show he can play off the edge in certain packages, 3-4 NFL teams will be all over him next April.

Play Jones like we play Nkemdiche. Outside on perceived run downs, inside on perceived passing downs and bring in rush specialists.

BMac has the size and strength to play ILB but closing speed and skill set to play OLB/DE, and he's equally as good at both.

So I think it's going to come down to whose pick he falls to.

I think he has a higher ceiling staying in the inside but of all the positions in the NFL, DE seems to be the only position without a stigma about having to teach.

Who knows. I'm with you, if playing him at DE helps the team then I'm for it. But he's a 1st round pick regardless, so if we're putting him at DE to help him move from ~#10 to ~#5 it's ridiculous.

Still, he has an uncanny ability to come through the middle in blitz situations. The closer he is to Jones the better the defense is, in my opinion.

With the depth at DT - I think Jones plays a lot of DE this year before moving primarily inside as a junior. At DT we've got three seniors with tons of experience, Nelson Adams & Nick James, plus at least 3 or 4 freshmen depending on who plays where (redshirt Simpson, Harris, Thomas, and Hoyett).

I also think Eulls still played a little DE last year didn't he --- maybe in 3 man fronts?

I thought you're either in college or you're not? How does that have anything to do with him redshirting?

Is that he won't arrive until fall practice starts, limiting summer workouts and physical conditioning.

I haven't thought about it like that. This is the problem I have with signing JUCO's that can't enroll early. First they can't participate in spring practice so that they are ready for fall. Second, something like this pops up where they are not enrolled by the 1st spring term, making them further behind the game.

I don't find it very prudent to red-shirt a JUCO either.
