Auburn similarities...

Chizik went to 3 straight bowl games with a national championship in there. Then he went 3-9. Auburn fired him. Is that just because Saban was his direct competition?

But look at the years he didn't have Cam ... two 8-5s, and one 3-9. 8-5 isn't really acceptable at Auburn, and 3-9 certainly isn't. And they knew anybody could have coached Cam. And nobody there, the fans, wanted Chizik in the first place.

Very interesting. And let me add...

I think Auburn (and the rest of the world) just knew that Chizik wasn't the long term answer. You just know sometimes. Yes it can be influenced by your competition (the feeling of getting left) but something has changed about Mullen. He's not the same as he was in those first few years.

The bottom line is this: 90% of coaches fail. It will happen you just have to see it happening and make the change before it get's out of hand.

Note: the only coach I can think of that everyone thought was done is Mark Richt. I thought he was finished but turned it around. He's the exception to the rule though.

I felt like chiznik's fate was sealed after the story hit about his encounter with the NCAA *****. Who in their right mind does what he did?

I'll respond this way: in how many threads over the past few days have you seen someone reference Hugh Freeze in response to another poster defending Mullen's performance. The relative success of a rival always shades the way a school views its own coach, for better or worse.

Throw in half the team getting arrested for drugs, armed robbery, getting shot at a pool party, etc. That sure doesn't help his case for sticking around another year.
