There is an article in the Staunton paper today bringing up the subject of introducing lacrosse to area schools. Not sure if this is the right section of VA Preps to bring it up, but I figured it would be noticed here.
One community (Stuarts Draft) is starting its own club team but it will not be officially sanctioned by either the school, the county or the VHSL. I guess the idea is to see how well it catches on. They will not be playing on school property.
Various school officials and sports journalists are being polled on the subject to see how valid they think the idea is, and so far there seem to be two possible stumbling blocks: 1) There are already too many spring sports and the schools could not find the facilities or the time to fit another one in; and 2) The enrollment in most of our schools is small enough that there would not be enough athletes to field a team without hurting the other sports.
So what do you guys think? Does lacrosse thrive in other areas of the state and do you think it could work here in our local area?
For me personally, I would attend a game once in a while just out of curiosity but I tend to put lacrosse and soccer in the same category, even though I know they are totally different sports. I don't understand the rules of either one worth a hoot, which is why they are similar to me.
