Well Austin left the game with what looked to be a head injury... Did K Hester ever return after he was injured in teh 4Q? If those two are out for OSU or any extended time RU will be EALLY thin back there. Getting to the point we will have walk ons oon teh 2 deep

Yeah, Longa ran through Austin's head on his way to making a tackle. Austin looked pretty dazed on the sideline and never returned. I'll be surprised if he plays this week. I think Kester will play.

If Austin is out, another true freshman (Adams) will be playing. Another RS freshman at CB (Wharton) ..not good against OSU. Hopefully Hester and Jacobs can play. The young CBs look pretty talented, however, it's going to take time for them to become very good relative to the competition they will be playing.

hope Austin is OK, need the front 7 to play as good as they did against MSU, and hopefully Hester & Jacobs are ok. Wharton has played very well for a R-Fr

Austin certainly got thrown into the deep end of the pool this season. And teams have been picking on him the last few weeks, trying to match up their best receiver on him. He hasn't been embarrassed, but there is a learning curve involved. When he gets through the growing pains the future looks bright.

I was in Disney World 2 weeks ago. At dinner, my grandson was wearing a Rutgers T-shirt. The server came to the table and lit up! She said 'I love Rutgers, my nephew goes to Rutgers and plays football there'. I asked who her nephew was and she said Isaiah Wharton. She was a wonderful lady and showed real love and devotion to her nephew and said the whole family feels the same way.

And as to the OP's assertion, I couldn't agree more. These 2 are kind of like silver linings to some otherwise dark clouds that have hit our team this summer.

I really like Jarius Adams as well. He looks like he's going to be a player.

In two years with these guys plus people like Rene coming in our secondary has the potential to be really special.

I'm all for a silver lining but Indiana just put up 52 on us and the QB set a personal best for passing yards in a game by the end of the first half. This is why people get disappointed. There is really nothing to substantiate a claim that this secondary "has the potential to be real special". If they show incremental progression all the way through their seniors years the secondary will be just fine and that'll be a good thing.

Seems to me, a lot of times the receivers were wide open on crossing patterns. Is that the DB, or is it the defensive scheme?

With a crippled defensive backfield, Saturday could get real ugly. As an advisory warning, would suggest folks stay away from the computer until 11 PM ET.

Indiana's offense is just as dangerous, with a healthy Sudfeld. We saw how good they were, and we made adjustments in the 4th quarter. Hopefully we get some of the guys back ready to go. Austin probably won't play, which is a big loss, so the guys behind him have to step up. The plus side here is we have our home crowd at night. Not saying we're going to stop them but I think it will be closer than last year.

What a Debbie Downer. I didn't come out and say it was a sure thing. If you do not see that this secondary has potential then you are blind.

I took your post as stated. Potential to be "really special" is beyond a reach at this juncture. Are you scarlet colored glasses to big to see that? And BTW, I did not say they did not have potential to be a good secondary. I said they can evolve into a good secondary over a long period of sustained improvement.

And to the poster above about receivers being wide open. It is a combination of both players and coaches no doubt.

It's the flashes of excellence that have been seen and give great hope for the future. While Girualt and Greene probably played more effectively in their first year, you have to account for the better circumstances they were in. We should feel very good about the future.

And on a side note, Cioffi does indeed have some nose for the ball. Not just a hopeful description.

As far as receivers running free, there a re of course a number of reasons but many times it is a lb isolated on a receiver who just cant keep up.

So let me ask you, if it is "beyond a reach" which guy out of the bunch has zero chance of being really good? Let me guess you don't know, but somebody has got to suck right?

Again, I'm not staying they won't be good. I think we're stuck on the "really special" designation. Blessaun has all the physical traits is nominate him. To me the Mccourtys were really special DBs. Marcus Cooper was really good but I wouldn't say he was really special. I'm saying it's definitely too early to compare them to the Mccourtys and really too early to compare to a Marcus cooper type. Or even Toler, etc

This group has a VERY good chance to be among our best since Schiano was coach...we have had a least 10 reach the next level ...Austin , Hester , Wharton can be very special...people say Adams is very talented...the fact that Sudfield put 686 yards up .... though not good is what a premier 4 year starter does...and please don't forget about his 3 very good WR's especially Jones Jr....we did tighten it up in the 4th quarter so let's let them just play.

Ah this where I think we disagree. I dont think every person on that group needs to be special for the group as a whole to be special. But every person has a chance to be very good.

The best thing about freshmen is next year they will be sophomores. Add that to the flashes these guys have shown in their first half season of college ball, and you have to be excited about their future.

More importantly they'll be battle tested as a group!!

These kids are studs and with time to grow they will be lock down corners. The type we have been wishing were here for a long time. They just needed time to get their feet wet. Now Rossi needs to dial up the pressure so they don't have to cover forever.

Really like the length of both new cb's. It is that size that really stands out for me. They are getting better each game.

Dailey was the guy that I thought would be the stud this year. He would have been a great player for us this year. The kid had it all with the exception of a functioning brain in his head.
