Austin is a grad transfer. Eligibility won’t be an issue.
“While he has one year of eligibility remaining, Williams will need a medical waiver to play next season. He transferred to Florida International (FIU) last year but didn’t play after sitting last season out with an injury. His waiver request appears straightforward, but it all depends on the unpredictable NCAA. This would be Williams’ seventh year in college.”

Simpson has definitely shown flashes of greatness, but also great inconsistency and looked every bit a freshman at times - I’m not sold on him being an every game starter yet. No matter what - experienced guard pickup like this? YES PLEASE!

Welcome to the Banks Mr. Williams!

Assuming Palmquist is also returning, here's our 2023-24 roster with heights/weights (using Rivals for incoming recruits):

5-11 (175) - Fernandes
6-2 (160) - Davis
6-3 (170) - Simpson
6-4 (200) - Williams, A.
6-5 (185) - Williams, J.
6-6 (227) - Hyatt
6-7 (180) - Griffiths
6-7 (216) - Mag
6-8 (220) - Palmquist
6-9 (205) - Chol
6-9 (250) - Woolfolk
6-10 (242) - Ogbole
6-11 (240) - Omoruyi

I'm sure some of these weights will be a bit different (especially for the recruits). Very interested to see how minutes break out as the season progresses.

Ogbole has great length though…wingspan listed at 7’6”.

He looks like a very good late addition but no way he starts over simpson.
He gets to the hoop well but he was playing against lesser comp
He is a physical player with a good handle
he will def give us better depth

Both Simpson and Williams will play plenty of minutes. Since Noah is pretty tiny and Simpson is really thin bringing in a bigger stronger guard was much needed
Do you see Williams to be a Yeboah type player?

Austin lit up the Baylor team that won it all. Filled the stat sheet on ‘em.
One game does not make a player
I think he is a great addition
Does not have elite quickness or shooting ability
He is a glue guy but if Derrick can become a little more consistent from the out side, he can become an All Big level player

Not exactly.
I posted this a couple weeks ago when he was first mentioned and the Baylor game was brought up.

"Haven't watched the Baylor game but looked through the box score and play by play quickly.
24pt blowout
7-14 shooting (2-6 from 3)
3-3 FT
19pts
Every 2pt basket was a layup

1st half: 2-6 (1-2 from 3)
Both basket within the first 6min of the game. Then nothing. While the game was close - Baylor seems to have shut him (and the entire team) down.

2nd half: 5-8 (1-4 from 3)
Didn't score in the 1st 10min of the 2nd half
Scored 14 of 19 points with under 10min left in the game when it was a blowout.

Obviously it's a 1 seed against a 16 seed so personally I wouldn't be inclined to take anything at all from the game - positive or negative."

Yeah can’t put too much stock into a guy that got his numbers at a lower level largely by playing bully ball. Good add, brings experience and will give us positive minutes but there’s a reason he wasn’t a hot name amongst P5’s in the portal — lacks elite quickness / elite shooting ability

Lol. Yeah Austin only put up 34 against a very good Vermont team last year. If the opponent is forced to put their best midsized defender on Austin then GG is gonna light them up. To guard Austin you need a really big guard or a quick and strong small-forward.

I like the pick-up, nothing I said was critical of Austin. Comparing Vermont (however successful an American East program they are) to the Big Ten in terms of size / athleticism is crazy tho lol. Austin will get his but his style of play will be more difficult to translate to a higher level than someone who’s quick / a great shooter (think Estrada from Hofstra, etc)

Well teams like Purdue can’t guard any decent mid-major guards.

I’m sure depending on the matchup they’ll be in and out. Austin is all about the bully ball and Derek is lightning. Austin is the more polished and complete player right now though as finding a real weakness with him is a bit of a reach.
Richie watched a 1:30 highlight reel. lol. Maybe he can have a week of practice first? No need to slot him in anywhere...Kind of silly....The better players will get more minutes...It' 's really [pretty simple...Pike knows what he's doing
