I don't blame them either. I wouldn't want all that travel out west.
Joing the SEC won't help with travel either. It may be just as far from College Station to Columbia or Blacksburg (if VT joins) as it is from College Station to LA or Oregon. In either case, travel would SUCK and require flying. Heck, it will even suck for State fans to have to drive to College Station or to Blacksburg.

Berkeley - 1800
Seattle - 2200
Pullman - 2000

Gainesville 924
Lexington 900

Travel is long either way but its double the travel in the PAC 10 plus you are talking about two time zones away on the west coast.

Traveling from College Station to Columbia, SC is just over 1000 miles. That is the longest trip for to any current SEC school. Traveling to the closest current Pac-10 school in Tucson, AZ is 997 miles. Blacksburg is almost 1300 miles from College Station, but a trip to Washington State is almost double that.

Mileage came from mapquest.

and the time zones are less attractive. I was just saying it will suck for EVERYONE going forward as it relates to travel, even in the SEC if we expand. I'd like to think I could afford to go to A&M every other year or to VT every other year but the fact is I can't. Oh well, as others have said...if I can't afford it, don't go.

In football, they'd be playing the 7 other teams in their division thus adding AZ and AZ St....not that far...not close but not ridiculous and they'd be flying to the places like KU, KSU, Neb, etc.that they already fly to anyway. They probably play 2 teams from the other division per year thus only travelling to one of them. That's one game to Cali/Oregon/Wash per year. One. Not that big of a deal.

Even in the minor sports, you still play your 7 division teams w/ not nearly the # of games against the other division.

simply because it would be better for them financially. And they're right.

Also, I bet they don't like Texas trying to tell them what's best for them, especially since them moving to the PAC-10 would benefit Texas more than them.

They are actually in the drivers seat here, no matter how arrogant Texas is about it. Texas NEEDS them to move more than they need to move for Texas. Their rivalry game will go on regardless. Texas doesn't have the balls to pull the plug on it, and A&M knows it.

Plus I think Texas A&M being a SEC school would help them tremendously in recruiting. Think about it- you're some kid in Texas and you're a great football player and you're neutral between UT and A&M. What conference would you rather play in? The SEC or the PAC-10? Exactly- the SEC. If A&M builds up their team, what's going to start happening is they are going to start to beat Texas in football like they did under Sherrill. And don't think that Texas knows that- which is another reason that they want to stay in the same conference.

Almost half the new Pac10 teams are in former Big12 locations. They might only play one or two cross-division teams.

...You want to talk about wasting time, money & fuel to conduct a sporting event?

Poor ole Miss. State is now flying its basketball team to California every year to play the likes of San Diego.

I always thought that was a very ignorant waste of money considering Southern Miss. is a 3 hour bus ride away.

Point being, during basketball season, you have all kinds of "poor schools" flying all over the northern hemisphere to play basketball.

Yet you never hear anybody complain about Rider or Stetson flying to Puerto Rico or Alaska to play a basketball game.

To take it a step further, northern schools (who actually lose money on baseball) flying all over the West and South during March & April to play baseball games in front of 200 people.

So since when did "distance between schools" become a big issue to college sports teams?

the University Texas is so rich, they could play all their 2010 football games in Iraq & still make money.

... geekish calcuation of distance between schools a type of hysteria.

We must explore the distance the Oregon State football team must travel to play a football game in Austin, Texas, but when the Oregon State baseball team flies to Florida in March to play baseball, nobody gives a ****.

That's my point.

the Left coast is 2 time zones away, in addition to the miles. Basketball players would barely get home from a Wednesday night game on the coast before classes started on Thursday. Yea, it's about the academics. Wrong. Texas will only join a conference they can dominate in Football, and push around money wise. SEC is not for them. I'd take A&M in a heartbeat, but no Texas their ego is too big. They have already destroyed 2 conferences (SWC & Big12) don't want them in the SEC.

...the point is you looked up how far it is from Texas campuses to west coast campuses, but nobody on this board has even calculated how much jet fuel, etc. it costs for Miss. State to fly to CA play San Diego in basketball.

What's the biggest financial WTF? Rider flying from New Jersey to Starkville to play MSU in basketball?

Or Texas flying to Corvallis to play Oregon State in football?

BTW, feel free to use mapquest to see how far Lawrenceville, NJ is from Starkville. I'm sure that "huge upset win" for Rider was worth the cost of the jet fuel.

my first post, but seems to be the topic to start off on. I currently live in New Mexico, and it is a horrible drive to get back home to visit family, much less traveling to see a game. The states of TX and NM are unbelievably huge, looking at a map does it no justice. Family and I have considered many times traveling out to see the west coast, but have decided against it every time. would be better served spending less time traveling back home.
there are several aTm friends i have gotten to know since being out here, and they are 100 % for joining the SEC. most have never liked being in UT's shadow, and also would fit in better as a university and alum/fan base in the SEC.
