Taking a look back at my spring positional evaluations...if interested:

http://forums.sixpackspeak.com/showthread.php?81224-(Un)official-SPS-PSD-Depth-Chart-Discussion-QB

2012 Outlook I really like our top 2. Probably more than most. Admittedly, a lot of my optimism comes from my expectations for Prescott, and that is not meant to be an indictment of Russell. I just think Prescott is everything Mullen is looking for. My biggest problem with the QB position isnt who we have, but how we use them. I just completely disagree that rotating QBs is a good thing. It was painfully obvious last year that Mullen wasn't comfortable running the offense through Russell. Whether that can be attributed to the OL, the stage of his development, or Mullen's overall offensive philosophy is open for debate. It still makes me cringe when I think about Favre coming in or Mullen yanking Russell on his hottest drive of the game vs. Bama, etc. etc.

With all that said, I think we will see Prescott and Russell next year. Russell still has a little work to do with the timing and quickness of his release, which seems to be the culprit on almost all of his interceptions or incompletions, because he showed last year that he can be deadly accurate when he lets go of it at the right time. Just needs to get the safeties down, which I think is harder for him to do when he isn't getting into a rhythm. I think we will start the season with Russell as primary and Dak in some packages. Can't wait to see Dak in the spring game though - visitors at the closed under-the-lights scrimmage this year were wowed by Dak's athleticism, arm and composure. The good thing is that we have some soft early games to get it all figured out. If this staff doesnt have a grasp on who the best QB for our team is by the time we get to those last 5 games, I will be extremely disappointed. I would prefer to see at most a 90/10 % split at QB by the time we get to Bama, or better yet, by Tennessee.

2015 Outlook Looks exciting with a 5th year senior leading the team in Dak Prescott. Mullen put on a nice show for Schuessler last week, but I think he is just organizational depth at this point. You have to think the staff will look to land a big time recruit next year at QB. The goal should be to at least have a blue chip true freshman in there for Dak's junior year at worst.

Well, nothing has changed here. I still think the offense really fires under Prescott when he takes over as a Junior. That said, it is entirely possible that anyone running a high school version of the spread option could be successful if Dak continues on the same arc he appears to be on. It is really unfortunate, because Russell is without doubt the best passer I have ever seen at State. We made it tough on him this year with our entire offensive philosophy. Hate to say it, but Freeze probably would have had Russell put up 3.5k and 27tds (if he can get 2,800 and 19 out of Bo Wallace). Dont even get me started on what Sumlin, Gundy or Dykes could get out of Russell.

If Koenning is going to be replaced, we would be ignorant not to hire an air-raid guy - anyone from the Leach tree would do just fine. Not that I want to necessarily be married to either style, its just the contrast that is important. We limited ourselves so much when we went with Koenning, because all he knows is the spread option game, which brought no new dynamic to the staff (since that was already Mullen's forte). This was exacerbated when Hudspeth left.

I think you were right. Sadly it looks like you put more thought into the QB situation than Mullen did. I still say that Dak could have been a huge difference in the Eggbowl. At some point in the second quarter Mullen should have made OM prove they could stop Dak and a ground game outside of the red zone. It should have been in our game plan just-in-case our passing game bogged down but it clearly was not. I`m still pissed at Mullen. He did a ****** half-assed job the last 5 games.

OT, but how about a recruiting update Azzur? I enjoy reading your breakdown. It appears we're going heavy JUCO to close, presumably because some of Mullen's 2010 and 2011 diamonds in the rough turned out to be turds.

LSU site reporting that it's rumored that one of our 4 star commits wants an offer. That's what pisses me off about all of it.

Right on. As much as I laugh at his sidelines fits, Spurrier has the right idea. If one qb isn't getting the job done, put in another one and let him try. When its obvious the starter isn't getting it done, give the backup a chance, especially when it's somebody like Dak.

Wow C34 now Azzuri agrees with me from what I said last week. And Azzuri, i feel the exact same way. If we are (excuse the reference) ALL IN on Tyler then we need to be all in. Otherwise next yr could get kinda rocky with our schedule & the loss of a lot of Sr WRs. The only thing I DO see that can help us next yr is I do think we'll be better on the OL & DL. I think that IF (and that's a big if) Collins stays he will not have the luxury of relying on a senior LB that is a bonafide "gym rat" like Cam to rest his lorals on. I think both Collins & Wilson are coming back. They will HAVE to make headway as positional coaches moreso than coordinators.

Air Raid OC?

Why in the world do we need an air raid OC? Yeah, Huckleberry from TAMU is doing a heck of a job, first at HU and now TAMU. But - we're not an air raid offense. Miss. high schools don't develop air raid QBs or WRs like they do in Texas. Sorry, it just ain't lining up for us. Air raid = high risk/reward.

Having said that, let's look at credentials before we corner ourselves in a box with a particular "style". Give me somebody who knows how to make in game adjustments - before and after halftime. Give me somebody who knows how to identify and isolate weaknesses in defenses. As long as Mullen is here, we'll be a run first team. This year and next year are the anomalies because of Russell's inability to move outside the pocket. Give me somebody who knows how to run the football.

Mullen is our head coach, and he will run a run-heavy spread option if we have the personnel.

If we get Cord in school, expect to see a four year stretch of the UF offense with Tebow.
