Ok, so its not really a manifesto, but that rimed with 7-0...sooooo...here is my review of MTSU and outlook going forward.

The last time we went to Bama undefeated Shaun Alexander crushed our souls on a wheel route...and I am afraid the results won't be any different this time around, but this still is a lot of fun isnt it?

QB - Tyler Russell is outstanding. For stretches of a game, he can look as good as you could possibly look as a QB. He does have some tough stretches too, but I personally believe those aren't all on him, and I will talk about that a little more in the WR section. He is exuding so much confidence, looks to be in total control of the offense and has emerged as the unquestioned leader of this team. As good as Russell is, we may be an even better offense when Prescott is a JR. He looks like Mullen's dream QB - will be able to execute the read-option and passing game to perfection. Mullen finally has 2 studs at QB and we finally see a rotation that makes sense. We are using Prescott perfectly right now.

RB - LDP isnt getting nearly enough love. He has been so good. Really shocking to see how well he is moving between the tackles and in traffic. If Tobias Smith played every game this season from start to finish, there is no telling what his stats would look like. Milton is a pretty impressive one-cut runner. There is no wasted effort on his runs and he hits the holes with malice aforethought.See Black's Law Dictionary. Nick Griffin gets a lot of unnecessary criticism here and elsewhere. Just like I said re: Robert Johnson, Griffin still has something to show. Robinson is also highly effective despite the brain fart Saturday night. We have a stable of running backs, that is for sure. The cool thing is, they all have different styles.

WR - the glowing praise stops here. And it isnt that I think we have a bunch of hacks, but the lack of a true vertical threat is really going to kill us going forward. Wonder why we never throw the deep ball? Because we can't get open. Wonder why it always seems like Tyler has to throw a perfect pass because the opposing defenders are in our hip pocket? Because they arent on their heels AT ALL worried about the deep ball. We have exactly 2 ways to bust a play in the passing game, Bumphis on a crossing route with some blocking help or Malcolm Johnson up the middle. Maybe you could throw in a RoJo post into the mix. That really shortens the field for us and makes things difficult on every phase of the offense. Clark and Smith are solid, yet unspectacular. Tubby is too unreliable at this stage. aGAIN, RoJo might be our most physically gifted receiver - and needs more targets.

TE - this is where we have a chance to be a mismatch. You better believe we used M. Johnson sparingly against UT and none against MTSU to get ready for this game.

OL - workmanlike job thus far. Priceless experience for Malone that will pay dividends going forward. If Smith can stay healthy over the last 5, we are in business.

DL - A little better effort this week with the expanding roles of PJ Jones and Quay Evans. Cherrington is a sieve and needs to be behind PJ and Quay without question. Eulls really needs to learn how to be more disruptive. Quay taking Eulls spot, with a line of Autry/PJ/Boyd/Quay on select "heavy" sets, would be interesting, as Quay may be the best linemen we have when it comes to getting in the backfield. At this point, Eulls is just occupying a blocker. Autry has ability and is definitely playing well, just not the gamebreaker we expected. However, I think he will have a standout game or 2 before its over. This group needs to step it up more than any other going forward.

LB - this group is coming along. Skinner and McKinney get better every game. Lawrence has been a little slow getting to the point of attack and in coverage, but is crucial from an on-field coaching standpoint. I still feel like we are under-using Matt Wells. I just cant get it out of my head that he was born to be a Laron Landry type safety.

CB - child please.

Safety - though both have impressive individual moments, the middle of the field is still our biggest weakness. The play of our DTs, MLB and Safeties will determine whether we give Bama a scare or get boat raced.

Special Teams - really dont think you can do anything but keep running Bell out there. Huge leg, just inconsistent. You just have to hope he gets hot. Allegedly, Bell can kick it deep in the endzone whenever he wants on kickoffs, we just dont do that because of the opportunity to set someone back well behind the 25 with good hangtime. Well, multiple TD returns should squash that immediately. Swedenburg continues to do a solid job.

Agree with pretty much all of that. But I still like Cherrington as a "space eater" who clogs things up and frees up the LBs to make plays. Still, I'd say you're spot on about Quay and/or PJ needing to start. We also need to see more of Virges. He's completely disappeared after a really solid FR season a year ago. He's big and mean, so turn him loose. Only thing that makes sense to me is he's in the doghouse for some undisclosed reason.

Wholeheartedly agree about our WRs and STs. I've been saying for weeks RoJo has to be more involved. And we've GOT to get Tubby the ball, too. He's the only guy who I feel is electric with the ball in his hands. It can't be THAT hard to put him in the slot and throw it to him on the slant, can it? And aGAIN, Mullen needs to fire himself as ST coach after the season. The only consistently good part of our STs is the punt unit. We have little return threat on PR or KOR and KO coverage is very inconsistent. Thankfully, I *think* we've faced the best 2 return guys we'll see this year in McCalebb & Patterson. Under no circumstances should we ever kick the ball to those guys.

Sure, he is a space eater, if the space you are talking about is 4 yards behind where he started out. He eats the hell out of that space.

I also forgot to mention the cruel joke our coaches have played on Nick James in these blowouts. I mean, it is almost sad. They throw that kid out there, and he knows that he better not ask to come out for a breather - but I was just waiting for him to collapse on the field from exhaustion. He just looked like he was going to die out there on their last drive. It is either going to break him or turn him into a freak.

Barring some bizarre turnover situation, like a couple defensive touchdowns by us, we just can't beat Bama with our current OL and DL. To put it simply, both have just been too soft in the running game all year (unless T. Smith is playing on the OL). Basically, we are going to need a pick 6 (or 2), T. Smith to play the whole game, and PJ Jones and Quay to have huge impacts...THEN, we get to worry about our receivers getting open.

Good assessment. Especially about the experience Malone is getting. He is going to be a beast on the OL for us.

Virges has been playing - I just don't think he does much. Really no one behind Boyd has done much. Boyd gets doubled a lot. We badly need either pj or Evans to start making more of an impact and take some attention off boyd.

I ain't knockin on cherrington - but he's a former walkon juco that apparently is as good or better than most of our DTs. We simply don't have that #2 guy to play beside Boyd for now.

That catch Robert Johnson had while lying on his back in the endzone was fantastic. The dude is seriously ******* cut, too. He has the strength to move a pile as a wide receiver. That's what Balis-made is supposed to look like. Bumphis looks stronger this year too and I'm really impressed with him so far this year. He's had some drops, but he's definitely shown a bit of what I expected from him the last three years. As far as Griffin, I agree wholeheartedly. He showed what he is capable of with one carry. He just has to make the most of his opportunities and doing so will provide him with more.

I don't disagree with any of it

In hindsight, we probably should have tried to get a JUCO WR that is a deep threat. I know we tried to get Lance Ray from NWCC that went to Arkansas. Other than the TE's, we're pretty much playing slot WR's across the board. I really wish O'Neal Wilder had stayed and developed instead of focusing only on track.

If we get Rumph, and he turns out to be a legit deep threat- Tyler could be really good next year.

I'd like to see some sets with Malcolm at WR- that might be our band-aid for not having a deep threat.

I also wish we had a big, bruising RB to complement Perkins. Josh Robinson is going to be good in that role, but he has freshman moments at times.

I haven't been real impressed with Autry yet- I hope he breaks out soon like McPhee did a couple of years ago.

Doesnt really do us any good to put MJ at receiver. We already have that, his name is RoJo. Part of MJ's success is his ability to dominate LBs and safeties, not corners. What I would like to see is a 4 WR bunch set with 2 bunched on either side of the OL fairly tight. Green Bay runs this a good bit. Have MJ and RJ (or Green) as the "inside" receivers. Both are physical enough to serve as blockers on that play, and both are fast enough to create mismatches on a passing play from that formation.

Here is an example of Chip Kelly using it:

Dont know why it is so small, but if you click on it you get a bigger picture. Its definitely not "spread" but I think we could do something out of that formation with our current personnel.

Side note: Wasn't it nice to see McCardell get a sack?

Where did he come from on that play? Was he lined up as a LB? All I know is he came through like he was shot out of a cannon. I bet he would make a hell of an OLB in a 3-4.

I thought Virges got a couple of good tackles for loss in the 2nd half? Of course that's MTSU (& I also may have memory loss from being an old fart & drinking too much over the last 30 years).

You nailed it with that one statement, Todd. We're just now starting to get a few non-slot WRs to come in. Crxxms killed us in terms of our ability to recruit WRs with his GCO. Then b/c we didn't have any WRs worth a ****, we had to be really run-heavy prior to this season. I'd imagine it's hard as hell to sell recruits on the idea that you'll be throwing the ball more when they aren't seeing it on film. We're just now starting to show a passing game capable of attracting top WRs that aren't slot guys.

As I said after the UT game, I don't remember us recruiting Cordarrelle Patterson, but we should have. Not saying we'd have signed him, but he could've come in and immediately been our #1 WR. I'd also say that not signing Brassell & Singleton hurt us in this regard, too. Brassell would be our #1 WR and the deep threat we're missing. And as an added bonus, he'd provide us a legit threat in the return game. But to your original point, a legit deep threat JUCO WR should have been our #1 priority in recruiting last season.

Interesting idea with Wells...

I'm not sure he's fast enough for safety. I like him close to the line of scrimmage shadowing the TE effectively taking out that option for the other team. Did you know Benardrick McKinney is the leading tackler for MSU right now as a rsFR? He has 55. Next closest is Lawrence with 49. That's pretty damn impressive.

Riddle me this azzuri....

The bama game is what it is and I will watch every second. Looking beyond that some....

Do you think Matt Wells has the ability to spy Johnny Football and keep up with him cause we are going to need someone to handle that chore? If he can't then broomfield? We're going to need to head 17 little johnny and if we can I think we'll run them out of town by three td's.

again, forgive me for looking ahead. My lack of focus will prolly lose us the bama game**

I would expect a contained pocket

We will stay at home and not collapse and rush the passer and create him running lanes and force him to throw while taking away the run. Go back and watch 2 half of Auburn Cam.version or Michigan bowl game.

This.

Seems to be our philosophy against running QBs rather than a spy. We want him to stay in the pocket and throw it up, which he has done...to the other team, a lot.

I would be shocked if Wells isnt just as fast as Nickoe. Maybe faster?

I dont know the answer to that, but I bet its damn close. The coaches must have a good reason for playing him the way they do, I would just like to see him on the field a little more.

You are right about McKinney. That dude is a beast. 6'5/230-40, runs well. He has a bright future ahead.

Exactly. You want Johnny Football to stay in the pocket. He might hurt you pasiing it. He WILL kill you running it.

Wells has pretty much disappeared since looking good the first two games. I just think he gets pushed around too much trying to play as a true LB but got abused trying to cover WRs against Troy. Definitely talented, but I'm just not sure how we could best utilize him every week.

And what has happened to dee Arrington - he's never shown anything. Kendrick market and Louis Watson are playing ahead of him.
