The nine-man Southern Miss search committee is expected to start the interviewing process early this week to find the school's next football coach.

The committee, which includes athletic director Jeff Hammond and former players Reggie Collier and Sammy Winder, is currently gathering a list of possible candidates. Ellis Johnson was fired last week after posting a 0-12 record in his first season at Southern Miss.

A source with the search committee said the plan is to narrow the field to one or two coaches by the end of the week. The committee hopes to have the new coach in place soon, given that high school recruiting is ongoing and qualified community college players can transfer to senior colleges before the start of next semester.

As of Sunday, nearly 30 coaches had shown interest in the job according to the source. A few of the early candidates include former Southern Miss offensive coordinator Blake Anderson (now at North Carolina), Indiana University of Pennsylvania head coach Curt Cignetti, Florida State associate head coach Eddie Gran and former Southern Miss player and defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix.

Another source close to the search committee, said former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino has expressed interest in the job through his agent. Petrino, fired by the Razorbacks before the season, is also believed to be a candidate at Auburn.

Not out of the realm of possibility, when you can count asst coaches at all 3 big schools, plus smaller school coaches in Mississippi & other schools, as well. Nobody you're going to know...

I think he could only hurt USM. He wouldn't bring any more recruits in than USM normally would, as his recruiting base is a bunch of old Christian women households. He would do better than average and leave as soon as something better came along.

Of course it's crazy to believe he'd actually go there.

There's legitimacy in ineptitude here

Meaning the USM interim AD would likely buy in to Petrino, whereas even Auburn has reservations.

Tyrone Nix would be the perfect fit for them...they need to have him on speed dial.

They may lose, but I don't want them to have a recruiter down there. Speaking of that, that's why we should be cleaning up in that area of the world (South AL, South MS and Louisiana) if there is anybody there we need. 3 star depth types.

If Petrino was interested they should jump in a heartbeat. Sure, he's got baggage but he wins and seeing as how they are getting left in the dust on all the conference alignment their only hope it to attempt to become relevant in football. That means winning some big games and Petrino might could do that.

Otherwise they are going to get a asst coach with no HC experience and it's a roll of the dice.

AU is the SEC crackwhore, but her parents are still trying their best to get her clean. Mississippi Southern is the abandoned crackwhore with no one there to help her. Petrino is waiting to find out which one spreads the legs first. He ready.

Are you serious? He would be better than the last one for sure. How old is he anyway?

I always liked Bower. He was a player / coach but could not get them over the hump as they like to say ... I say they should realize their limitations and hire him back

Bringing Bower back would be comedy at its finest for USM fans. I'd be on EagleTalk to watch the mayhem.
