You know, I didn't really think it was that big of a deal when I heard he tripped. I didn't think it was that uncommon.

ETA: What's funny is the comments section. People hate Chris Chase. I've never paid attention to the guy, but he has quite the following.

and judging by the comments on the article he is. Also 4.63 is not all that bad for an in between the tackles running back. If i remember correctly, emmitt smith's combine time wasn't even that fast and he was one of the bast backs in NFL history. I think Ballard has a lot better game speed. He was able to pull away on several runs in his career at State. Sucks though that he tripped in front of camera but it happens. Must suck to be a writer with no atheltic talent to make fun of an athlete that could whip his butt any day on the field.

I'd have to question my skills as a journalist if I had to take the time out to write about a guy that busted his *** in the 40 at the combine. It's one of those things that Ballard will take some crap about from his buddies and future teammates, but it's certainly not newsworthy. Not to mention calling a 4.63/40 "unimpressive" for a big back shows a lot of ignorance....

board to get a fair and unbiased view of the event. There are people on there that hate all things MSU like you would not believe. I know we have our share<div>but those asshats are unbelievable.</div>

Ballard has that "Oh **** someone is catching me" speed and it kicks in at that point.

and said (I'm paraphrasing). "Isn't there some actual film on this guy with some pads on and a ball in his hands running past people scouts could drool over? How about that for an eye-test?"

Before last season, he said that wasn't going to happen again this year. And it didn't. Every time he broke in the clear, he scored.

"football speed" I've seen from a running back. Whatever speed he has out of pads he must fully retain with pads on because you never saw him get run down from behind while at MSU. I'm sure Ladarius Perkins would show much better outright running speed than Ballard but we've all seen him get caught from behind on several occasions.

So yes, you are correct that you can make it as an NFL tailback at that speed. Of course, if you're going to make it as an NFL back at that speed, you have to be a good pass blocker, at least decent in pass routes, and you have to not have any fumble issues. In other words, the rest of your game better be elite if you don't have the top end speed.

of course never said i wasn't either. i wasn't making fun of athlete on a national sports article. I don't get paid to a be a professional sports writer. this guy is. it would be nice to see some professionalism from a professional writer. there is a difference between a sports message board and national media article.

his pass blocking was talked about during the senior bowl practices. seemed to be ok coming from a team that didn't pass that much. I think he can pick up a lot of things quickly in the nfl like BJGE. BJGE has improved a lot since he first arrived in the NFL.</p>

think Ballard is as big yet but he could get to that size as he ages. I am still shocked that New England didn't use BGE more in<div>the Superbowl than they did, tough customer.</div>
