Barring a miracle, Shaka staying put at VCU.......

It is being said that Shaka is likely to stay at VCU, and I don't understand why he would that. Seems like playing with fire to me. I don't care how good of a coach you are, when you are at a mid-major school you run the risk of your bubble popping at anytime and your career opportunities dwindling. Seems like he is waiting on all the money in the world or the perfect job to come along. That is all good and well as long as you win, but those jobs don't come open very often and there is a strong chance that VCU will take a down turn in the near future and make him a non-candidate.

Alot of people have said the same thing about Mullen and MSU, however, that is different because Mullen makes a top 20 salary and coaches at a school that has the support, recruiting base, passion to "potentailly" do something. I just don't see how Shaka can't capitalize on his situation while it is likely as good as it will ever be.

Shaka Smart would be the equivalent of getting Petersen in football 3 years ago, and we have even fewer ties to Smart than we did Petersen. Same goes for Greg Marshall.

Let me just say though that I have every confidence in us making a great hire. This isn't your daddy's MSU athletic department.

I think he's a great coach- but he is 50...and that's something we are staying away from apparently

I've thought that Bury should have been let go several years ago, and I've been one of your biggest supporters this year. What's going on? You've practically fellated Marshall and Smart for the last year and now they aren't even in the picture? That just seems stupid if we are going to ignore a coach and his credentials because he is 50. Hell, the modern day philosophy preached by you and others is to kick them to the curb after 10 years at a school anyway. With that being the case, why the reluctance to go after a guy that will eventually be canned before his 60th birthday? Is it a rule that Stricklin has to be older than his hire? Isn't the new titty dog coach pushing 60?

saying he was given advice "not to chase happiness" and that's what he kept in mind last year after he had a lot of interest from larger university coaching positions. if this is the reason he's staying put i highly respect that. that's what i want out of Mullen if he continues to improve and succeed.

not so pumped about Prohm.

I live in Virginia and don't have any insight into 'what' Shaka will do BUT he is actually in a LOT BETTER position than Mullen.

Consider ... he went to the final 4 just last year ... made a run this year after having to replace several starters... they play in the CAA (Delaware, Hofstra, James Madison, Georgia State, George Mason, Drexel, Northeastern, UNC Wilmington, William & Mary, Towson, Old Dominion) - which is sorta like being the 'Kentucky' of the conference ... VCU recruits in a great BB area including DC, Richmond, and North Carolina ... and a couple of players make a big difference.

He is making $1.2M+, will probably get a 'bump' from all the attention, and can stay at VCU as long as he gets to the dance every other year.

If you were happy somewhere and making that kind of money, would you really be in a hurry to leave? Especially since he can probably get the same amount of guaranteed money from VCU that he can from one of the bigger schools. I don't know if he has, but I bet he could get VCU to extend him for 6 years of guaranteed money if he was willing to agree to a significant buyout on his side also. After that contract, if he flamed out, he could go coach jr. high girls basketball and still live comfortably for the rest of his life.

he could make $1.2M+ the entire rest of his career and never worry about getting the ax (assuming vcu doesn't totally tank). he's got career long security at vcu so long as he makes the tourney somewhat regularly and stays at or near the top of the colonial league.

already 'backpedeling' from Shaka (holding out for UCLA) and in spite of his 'man crush,' he now thinks Greg Marshall is just too old at 50.

Translation = all those 'top' coaches that were dying to come to Starkville ... well, they are haveing some second thoughts.

Scott has a list and has the search firm working it. Several on the list are still coaching right now in the tourney.
We will make a good hire and you then can go back to eating biscuits..

We are not having a problem getting interest in our job. I personally would love Gregg Marshall- havent changed my stance at all. But the people making the decisions want younger apparently- and I can understand why they think that. If you will look back- many of us said the only problem we had with Marshall was his age.

There is no backpedaling on Shaka- we cant get him- he wants too much money. I and others said before this started it would be tough to get him- but it wouldnt hurt to ask.

I'm pretty pleased with the candidates we have.
