....and trying to figure out where the dropoff from last year to this year is.
The thing that jumps out at you is Scott Deloach. He hit .353 overall and .365 in conference. He gave us very good production from the catcher spot, and may sort of be overlooked because our pitching staff was horrible and he was basically a one year guy. We replaced him with Freeman and Thigpen. Freeman is hitting .286 (about where he was last year - just not a very consistent hitter, and has never been) and Thigpen who is hitting .183. That is a huge dropoff.
Powers is hitting .371 overall, but only .275 in the conference. He hit .301/.298 last year. I suspect he'll pick it up some. He was big for us early on, but has not been a good bat in the SEC obviously. Pitchers aren't giving him much to hit.
Sneed is the other big dropoff. He hit .333/.327 in 2009. He's only hitting .271 overall but is hitting at a .429 clip in conference play, which indicates how bad he was until recently. Hopefully he'll keep hitting the ball.
Adkins has gotten somewhat better, as has Collins. Collins is still an under .300 guy. Butler is doing about what he did last year. Duffy hit .339 last year, but has only played sparingly and is hitting an even .300. Hopefully, he'll be an every day guy.
We also miss Grant Hogue, who hit .315, but he is more or less replaced by Vickerson who hits the same.
Frost at .181 needs no explanation.
I guess the biggest explanation is that we really miss Scott Deloach, and we have had terrible hitters getting significant at bats in Frost and Thigpen. Last year, we had one guy batting under .200 and he only got 33 AB's all year. Frost and Thigpen have gotten a combined 132 AB's already. Your bottom of the lineup guys really need to be able to at least hit .250 for you. This under .200 stuff should keep them off the field. They are really dragging the team down.
