I agree, while I wasn't happy with the retaining of such an ineffective basketball coach, the $12 million was just too big of a pill to swallow. But I really believe retaining Paris for a program that has been so bad for such a long will allow Donati to make a change for a program that was exceptional and used to have higher expectations.

As you accurately pointed out, the upcoming schedule is just brutal, I will not be surprised to see PM step down next week, if this weekend series goes really badly as expected.
And I think stepping down is the operative. Even if he is forced to, I believe the school will not categorize this is a firing.

I dunno, as brutal as the schedule is, I could see us emerging from that stretch of games with some just shy of a .500 record and maybe feeling a bit better about things. Just b/c we're all expecting it to go so horribly. Those 10 games, I could see us maybe going 4-6. Not good but not horrendously awful considering the level of competition.

Not an a$$, and I predict Mainieri will be gone after the season (barring a miraculous turnaround).

Firing mid-season has to be an egregious personal character offense, e.g, theft, etc. Poor playing IMO does not rise to that level.
So much for this line of thinking. Couldn’t imagine enduring the rest of the season with Mainieri as the coach. All things considered, he may have given us the worst coaching job SC has ever had. Newton, Paris, etc…inherited bad programs. It takes a special kind of terrible to be this bad at SC in baseball. He was it.

I agree with you re: how terrible the program is. I haven't examined the history of the program "all the way back" but I don't think it's ever been this bad since before Bobby Richardson was coach. And maybe Jack Powers before him. And that's almost 60 years.
