BDJ say that Callaway PG Deville Smith has MSU #1 on his list.

He has us above Kentucky and Baylor. This kid is a stud and a must have. He's a top 30 national recruit on Rivals.

and which of those is the alleged Mississippi Fab Five? I saw a bunch of recruits, just curious as to who these "can't miss" guys are.

We NEED to sign him.

Of note: Baylor keeps popping up on Mississippi recruits' lists. Drew and staff work overtime on recruiting. If we were looking for a coach, he would be #1 on my list. I don't know that he'd leave Baylor for MSU, though. He may hold out for something big.</p>

I've heard that we're in good shape with him despite the reports on the spirit. Adams from Brandon is a lock and another top 50 national recruit.

but after Scotty Hopson, Cameron Newton, and the countless others where it "made sense" for the guy to come to MSU, I'm jaded on that topic.

Until we become a nationalprogram in a sport (like baseball), we're simply not going to beat the bigger programs out for "wanted" out of state guys. I'm talking about the truly heavily recruited guys where there's no questioning their offer list.

We can definitely land the instate big fish, so I don't know if what I just typed even applies to this situation. I see us getting the instate guys.

this state has produced many guys in basketball that could go to big time programs and the farthest anyone has gone that I can think of is Tuscaloosa.

It could happen, but its not likely.

But the truth hurts. I wish it weren't so. We need to become a powerhouse program to get the recruits. The question is how do you become a power house program without them? It's a catch 22.

the top-rated PG in the country, a one-and-done type player. Cal's history with Rose, Evans, and Wall has basically built that reputation.

in 2011, They're recruiting Marcus Teague, the "best" PG in the country. I think we have a good shot at Deville because UK likely signs a more highly touted PG. O'Bryant, on the other hand, is probably very high on their list (scout shows a UK offer).

Stans's track record on signing the major in-state talent is certainlyvery good(though they haven't made it to campus). 2011 will be Judgement Day for "the Recruiter".

Devin' isa 6"2 sophmore guard. He actually had more points in the final than Deville. That could be to our advantage over teams like UK, who just want Deville.

I think we get Smith, Hood, & Adams for sure.</p>

By my limited amount of bball knowledge, it appears that our version of "motion" offense or whatever you want to call it wouldn't be very desirable for a true PG. PG's don't like to dance around the perimeter waiting for plays to develop on their own. They like to lead set plays, drive/dish, etc.

I would think PGs would look elsewhere first in the same manner that QBs looked elsewhere in our pre-Mullen days. QBs with great arms don't want to waste that talent handing it off every play. True PGs don't want to essentially be a SG and a PG in name only either.

Dee was a pretty solid recruit, but I don't think he even played PG in high school. Gary Ervin is the only highly touted "true PG" that we've brought to campus - and he transferred.

it happened more often...Jackson to LSU, Harrington, Ronnie Henderson.

Ward was a while back as well.

Im not even sure how many wanted Fells or Charles Thomas.

The ones we've wanted, we've signed. Mo Williams is about the only one I can remember really losing.

Edit: Darius Rice. So its happened more than I thought, but its not a "oh god, KY is after him, we have no chance" thing like in football when Bama or LSU wants someone. That's the point I really wanted to make.

running a pick and roll at the top of the key. The PG has the ball in his hands and makes the play going to the basket. That would be attractive to a recruit.

I think he also may like our "freedom" on offense to take whatever shot you feel like shooting, as well as our lack of PG depth behind Dee. We probably will tell him that during Dee's SR year, he'll play some SG, so even more PG minutes available.

Starting 5 for fall of 2011:

Smith
Bost
Hood
O'Bryant
Adams

into a corner like that to work off the ball screen? For starters, you back yourself up into an awful position. Secondly, you telegraph exactly what the screen is going to do. Why not at least back up to center court and make the defender guess whether the screen is going to be flat or come from the right or left. DMNDS.

And I agree, why wouldn't a PG want to come here. The point guard been the center of our offense for 5 years.

We definitely had the better Charles of the two.

I think Darius Rice is the only one to really spurn us in the last 10 or so years. I would've liked to sign Fells, but I don't think the staff was that high on him.</p>

b/c Miami is not some big time program that poor ol state can't compete with. That was just Stan Jones knowing Rice and working hard.

is that his top 3 are MSU, Ole Miss and Bama.

He has listed a lot of ACC schools, but might not go far from home. I know this sounds sheepish, but I've heard that MSU will land Hood if they really want him. I would assume that we would want him because he's a top national player with big boy offers. His dad played at MSU so that can't hurt.

I think MSU lands:

1. Smith
2. Adams
3. 50/50 on O'Bryant
4. Hood

which meant letting Stringer and Courtney go to LSU (not saying we would've signed them). I think we have put too much hope in the class of 2011 so we'll see if pays off. Really wish we had the Riek ship back.

I don't really know about that, but you're right - Luckett has been in Starkville often. I thought we had an "in" with Hood, like his mom played for State or something. Of course, if we did, then we probably won't sign him.

I want to say BDJ mentioned that Ammons may be looking out of state as of now.

would've been nice instead of a 7 footer on the pine. Not that JUCO big men are easy to find, but any production would've been better than Riek's this year (and probably next).

So I don't think you are wrong to assume that.<div>
</div><div>I just saw that Hood didn't mention OM or MSU in his latest interview and didn't know if he was just screwing around.</div><div>
</div><div>I think MSU is going to pass on a couple of really good in state kids, based purely on numbers. </div><div>
</div><div>If there is one reason I want Stans gone is to open up the recruitment on the MS kids.</div>

O'Bryant, Ross, Hood, Adams, Luckett & Lacey have been offered. We better go ahead and offer Deville. The kid has some major skills. Hope you caught his game winner last Saturday vs Provine. They play again this week at the Big House.

We need to land Smith, Hood, Adams, O'Bryant & Luckett. That would be a Fab 5 from Mississippi.

What's the deal with our 2010 class? Is it just a huge bag of SUCK?

Its actually a very small back of suck. Hell the small bag part may be true but who knows on the 1 player. May be a great guard.
The suck part is for sure true since it doesnt at all address our terrible lack of legitimate post starter or post defender. Sidney better stop drifting out to the perimeter and plant that tree trunk of a body in the paint like Pittman at Texas, cuz we dont have anyone else that is dependable.

The problem w/ the 2010 class is that we only have one scholarship to give since Jarvis was officially a walk on this year.

Unless we have some attrition, we don't have another scholly to give. I know attrition freaks all of you out, but it's actually needed and a good thing sometimes. Wish we could lose some of the current dead weight.

I don't know that Scout has been updated in a while.

I watched the title game. That was awesome, and a great game winner by Deville. I went to the semis, where Deville basically took over in the second half. I wasn't too impressed with Ladarius White, who apparently will choose between MSU and UM. He's athletic, no doubt, and it was just one game.

Your 5 is the best we could hope for. And may not be the pipe dream that it seems to be.

Attrition hasnt everfreaked me out, at least not in general. Its when you look at WHO is leaving that ifreak.

Rimmer?...whatever, leave. Cool team guy by all accounts, but just not good enough to play.
Houston?...whatever, leave. Partial cancer and clearly had more success at Tn State.
Cowherd?...whatever, leave. Didnt impress at USA, much less at MSU.

But having Rhodes threaten to leave, Goodridge leave(yeah he sucked, but he would have been helpful in his last season in terms of depth), Delk leave who started,Delk leave who started at times and played a ton, Hansbrough leave who started...
This is the attrittion that hurts.

3 Holcombes can leave each season and we wont miss em since they made no impact. Now i would question whythe hell we are signingso many unuseable players, but i really wouldnt care if they left.

As for who can leave from this upcomingteam...im really not sure.
Beckham- clearlya terrible PG, but maybe he actually does improve. 1 year is tough to judge a mediocre recruited player.
Benock- heplaysa good amount as it is, though many dont understand why.
Osby- hasnt shown why he was so highly rated or recruited yet, but still better than other options.
Bailey- a career backup post player, but we dont have anyone better
Lewis- see Beckham.

Just not sure who would leave because i cantimagine us actually landing anyone with FOR SURE higher talent that could impact right away.
