A little slow around here and just looking at the roster of who we have coming back next year got me thinking about that fun topic that gets thrown about here every so often. 3-4 look at all next year?

Just looking at the roster got me thinking we have a lot of tweener guys (obviously depending on current weights). Doesnt look like we are going to have any 300 lb guys to plug in at DT next year. Plenty of guys in the 250-275 range (again depending on how some guys look after a year plus in the weight room)

Not sure we have a true nose. Or the LBs for that matter. And does Banker even have any experience running any 3-4?

Anyways seemed like a fun thing to discuss.

There have been some rumblings about that. Could be interesting but I see us staying with our base.

If VV was staying a 3-4 would me an easier transition. McMullen would be a good 3-4 base DE and we have several DTs that could play the other end spot. Freedom could be on the other side or play as a stand-up OLB. But I think it would be more difficult with the existing DTs, because like you mentioned we have a lack of 300+ guys to play nose. Having a solid nose tackle in a 3-4 is crucial.

I can't see it without VV to play nose. Williams, Maurice, Stolenberg and the Davis twins are all on the light side.

Agreed.

So maybe the better question is with a bunch of slightly undersized but athletic guys that arent true "speed" rushers in a Wistrom or Gregory mold, do we see more "Psycho" or "Amoeba" type sets on third and longs? We dont have any great edge rusher so maybe put all those guys out there and confuse the line and QB.

Think most of those guys have the right mix of size and athleticism to either rush the passer or drop into coverage. I hope Banker is open to such an idea in lieu of having any true pass rushing threats.

Banker did do some 3rd and long changes where he played 3 DEs (including McMullen inside) and Collins - but stayed in 4 man fronts. I don't see that changing - he will worry about run stopping first. Hopefully we find a good pass rush group for the long yardage situations.

Big thing we need to find is LB/S that can get after the QB better when we do blitz.
