With the year almost up, let's get a good music thread going. What are you favorite albums from this past year? Here's a couple that really hit me in a good way this year:

Pinegrove - Cardinal

Hard to describe their sound. It's sort of a mix of alt-country and alt-rock. Either way, it's really great stuff. Top notch musicianship, melodies, lyrics, and they're outstanding live. Would love to see them blow up, at least as much as a band like this can blow up anymore.

Anderson .Paak - Malibu

Warm, smooth, jazzy progressions, lots to love here. And you have to love someone who can sing and drum like this at the same time. Try not to smile and bob your head you guys.

Pretty down year for music, imo.

Sturgill's record was really good. I liked Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition.

As far as "great" albums that's about it *shrug shoulders emoji*. I liked a lot of singles and some other albums were ok, but nothing spectacular

I dont like a lot of new music, but thought some were decent:

Tribe Called Quest- We got it from here, thank you 4 your service
Jim James- Eternally Even- Not a big fan, but this was decent
Nick Cave- Skeleton something. Nothing really innovative, but just good
Angry Angels- Angry Angels- Post punk, slight devo, damned sound, but decent (really good album)
Russian Circles- Trans Am- esque chicago post rock style, instrumental. Heavy and dark

Freakwater- Scheherazade- Carter family, Cathy Irwin's voice is so haunting, like a more drunk/beat up Patsy Cline. Velveteen Matador is awesome

Kayne West - Pablo was really good, but his work is phenomenal. I dont even like hip hop that much, but its a really good album, maybe even underrated. Probably the best album I listened to.

The Avett Brothers - True Sadness
Kind of a departure for them but I've really enjoyed the whole thing.

A few more recent releases that I really like...

The Bonnevilles - "Arrow Pierce My Heart"
Devon Allman - "Ride Or Die"
The Temperance Movement - "White Bear"
Davy Knowles - "Three Miles From Avalon"
Tedeschi Trucks Band - "Let Me Get By"

And one that shouldn't count since it's from late 2015. But I really like this band and this album, and I just recent found them. Federal Charm - "Across The Divide". My favorite song from that album...

I like these albums that have already been mentioned...

The Record Company - "Give It Back To You"
Sturgill Simpson - "Sailor's Guide to Earth"
Tedeschi Trucks Band - "Let Me Get By"
Jim James - "Eternally Even"

A couple I like that haven't been mentioned yet…

The Heavy - "Hurt & the Merciless"
St Paul & The Broken Bones - "Sea of Noise"

My favorite was probably "Hurt & the Merciless" but "Give It Back To You" is a close 2nd. But I could effortlessly reverse that order on any given day though.

Damn, Grammys did Sturgill no favors. I didn't really think girls in jeeps were banging his ****.

The artists competing in the album of the year category are Adele, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Drake and Sturgill Simpson.

5 posts in and Chano got mentioned. Definitely one of the best albums of the year and he's still on the rise. His next album will have as much buzz as anyone's in the rap community.

Life Of Pablo was pretty great.

Dance Gavin Dance's Mothership was epic..but that's Mathrock and Post-hardcore. Not exactly a popular genre. But in that community, one of the year's best.

If you like The Heavy you should check out the Monophonics.

HOT DRIVE BY TRUCKER TAKE:

Wish Cooley would have left the band at the same time Isbell did. Cooley's the best songwriter and guitarist out of the three, but he's been stuck with Hood's lame *** songs dragging down the past 6 albums

Metallica's Hardwired ....

thats pretty much the only album that came out this year that I love enough songs on it to consider it a great album...
Spit Out The Bone is amazing. But my favorite song on the album changes almost daily.

Its the perfect mix of all of their albums basically. Theres Load type songs on it, theres slow heavy songs on it, and killer thrash songs on it. I love it.

Hetfield sounds maybe the best he ever has. Lars drumming was fantastic. Even though Kirk still has the wah wah thing a lot, in general his solos were fairly good throughout. And Rob was solid as usual. Fantastic album.

I definitely think Spit out the Bone belongs in a Metallica's greatest hits album. But like you my favorite keeps changing... Today i've been listening to Halo on Fire over and over.

Thats a good one too. Thats the closest to a ballad on the album. When Hetfield yells "Fast" it sounds like his Kill Em All voice damn near.

Never could listen to these guys because of the god awful name but I peeped "We Own the Night" as a rec and I'm digging them. The harsh vocalist is definitely giving me a Hawthorne Heights vibe (which isn't the best thing) but the guitar work and overall sound is similar to The Sound of Animals Fighting/Circa Survive which I can definitely get behind.

My top 5:

Gojira - Magma
Fallujah - Dreamless
After the Burial - Dig Deep
Red Fang - Only Ghosts
Badbadnotgood - IV

I've been a fan since the thrash days, and I was pleasantly surprised by this album especially considering my lowered expectations over the years. (I didn't like the Loads or St. Anger and Death Magnetic was just OK, IMO.). The only tracks I don't like from Hardwired are Manunkind and Dream No More. Spit Out the Bone, Moth Into Flame and Here Comes Revenge are my favorites.

As a random side post, I stumbled on these videos where a fan recreated the new songs as if they were on old albums. (Instrumental only)
