Florida rolled the dice on Urban Meyer.
well please let us know when there are former SEC head coaches that run our offense. I can see you don't understand what Stoops was looking for.Originally posted by jte123:
This is why some UK fans get upset when we hire an OC that's called some plays and other schools are hiring former SEC head coaches as Coordinators. But when this is brought up I get bashed and I'm not a true fan. I thinks Stoops is doing a good job and hope we get it going but it's a major up hill battle. An experienced coach would be a huge benefit that's all I'm saying.
Worst post of the young 2015. We have a coordinator that just got hired as a head coach. We have a special teams coordinator that got hired by LSU. We have a recruiting coordinator that was considered for a high level D-1AA head coaching spot and is being rumored to being courted by Harbaugh and UM.Originally posted by jte123:

So Gene Chizik was available as an OC, who knew?Originally posted by jte123:

I'm sure completely changing our offense would have been great for this team.
I hear what you are saying but if you are scoring 50 points every game, I'll take my chances that we can hold at least 6-7 or more teams to 49 or under.Originally posted by truebluewildcat:
I think that some of the perceived frustration is coming from the fact that while our OC did bounce, and we may have needed a change even if he didn't...Our offense isn't the most immediate concern...Brown and a first year starter put up some points this year, and for all their flaws provided bright spots...
We scored on some folks this year, and have a lot of nice young talent on that side of the ball that just needs some time to gel and develop...
Heck, maybe Marrow could have been promoted...
The point of contention with the Dawson hire compared to some others is the fact that D wins in this conference and every other conference...and there were two pretty good defensive coordinators with SEC and head coaching experience available...
Auburn had a tough year...they hire a D coordinator....
UNC...different conference, but maybe comparable program still relatively early in Fedora's tenure goes and gets a championship winning HC and DC...to maybe give them a boost...
Randy Shannon has been out there...looking for a shot to do something for a few years now...was at Arkansas...and now he's at Florida as LBs coach...lateral move from Arkansas...
Maybe Shannon Dawson is the next Chip Kelly...great...but scoring 50 doesn't mean much when the other team scores 51...
I think Stoops agrees with you....hence, he stated he was taking his time on the ST coordinator hire to see if he could bring someone with a ST/DC type background.Originally posted by truebluewildcat:

All of the former HC's being hired as coordinators have been defensive guys. There aren't too many offensive guys out there that come to mind...other than Joker. Think we should have gone after him? We're talking about guys who were out of work that are taking those jobs.Originally posted by jte123:

So, do you think he will risk his $3.5 million job by letting a couple hundred thousand lose Marrow, if it comes to that?Originally posted by fuzz77:

I would also argue that HC experience doesn't make one a good or better coordinator anymore than being a good coordinator makes one a good HC. They are different jobs that require different skill sets. Were they good HCs they would still be HCs and not OCs/DCs/position coaches.
Further, former HCs are likely going to want to do things their way and run their offense or defense. If you are hiring someone who's "way" matches the way you have or are building your roster...then great! Otherwise you are asking fans to "be patient while we change systems" and you are telling the players that you've recruited that the plans have changed and they may not fit the new system.
IMHO one of the worst things you can do when trying to build a program is to continue to change systems, change identities every couple of years. Pick what you want to be and then devise a plan and commit to be the best at what it is you want to do. Any system will work as long as you have the personnel to run that system.
As for experience...here's my experience. Over the past 30 years I've hired close to if not more than 100 people. There is a difference between people with no experience and those with a couple of years...there is practically no difference in people with 2-3 years experience and those with 20.
Last night Bama had an experienced OC who is a former HC calling plays. His resume was impressive enough that the HC who is considered one of, if not the best HC in college football, at the premier football school would hire him. With 90 seconds and down 7 pts his team gets the ball 85 yds from the tying score. They run 7 plays and not one of those plays puts the ball into the hands of the best WR in college football or either of their top tier RBs. Not only did they not touch the ball, they weren't even targeted!
Shannon Dawson has experience. He called his own plays at Millsap and SFA and that success got him his job at WVU. He's had an additional 4 years with Holgersen. And before you poo-poo on Millsap and SFA...calling plays is calling plays. There are 100's if not 1000's of successful coaches at lower levels of college football who only differ with their D1 cohorts in the opportunities presented them. Most coaching hires are about relationships in one way or the other.
Lastly, do you think CMS is stupid? Do you think he would risk his $3.5 million job on someone who he didn't think was ready for the job? CMS knows he has to start winning and start winning soon! The honeymoon is over.
