I've been to Starkville several times but what restaurant is the best place to hang out on Saturday afternoon before driving over for the game?

We had originally thought about tailgating but, with such a late game start, don't want to miss out on watching some of the big games that afternoon. (We don't have any kind of satellite set-up for tailgating.)

So looking for a good place with good food, good selection of beer, and a place they don;t mind us hanging out for a while. Thanks in advance!

Not a great TV selection there. I'd go Stagger Inn.

Am I alone in thinking that Mugshots makes a terrible burger?? My wife loves the MS in Meridian and always wants to eat there... I cant stand it. The burgers look "stamped" out and taste like road kill.

You're are not alone. The best burger in Starkville is at Brian Michael's.

Unfortunately, good beer selection and Starkville don't go together. But we now have a better selection since the laws have changed.

Here are the places I would recommend, meaning they have beer and tvs (in no particular order):

The Grill
Stagger In
Ptolomy's Taproom
BWW
Cowbells
Lil Dooey's
Harvey's
Mugshots
The Veranda
Halfway House

Count on crappy parking and standing room only.

I'll second that.

Best burger in Starkville has got to be brian and michaels followed by christys in my opinion.

If you want to see the games Buffalo Wild Wings.

Go to Dave's Darkhorse

Chicago style pizza. A great gyro. Drinks were cheaper than dirt when I was at MSU. Cheap as in they had 75 cent wells. Probably not the case anymore. But they've got good food, a good number of TVs. Drunken ring on a string game. Foosball, pool, darts. If things haven't changed too much, your waitress will be stoned and slow as Christmas, so hanging out for a while won't be a problem.

Plus, if you get completely tanked, just go right out of the parking lot and cut through the Texaco, turn right up Old West Point Rd. Then take a left on University Dr. and just follow it to the stadium. Just google mapped it and it's a 1.2 mile walk. It'll be a hell of a lot quicker than trying to park somewhere closer.

It's funny how many places are mentioned that I have never heard of since I haven't been back in 4 years. Glad Vegas is movin on up.

Dave's is certainly the coolest place in town to drink, but if you're interested in watching a lot of football, then this is not the place. They do have a couple of TVs, but this is not a sports place.

I fully agree with you on the stamped part, how hard is it to hand pat them out. I have spent some time in there drinking 2 for 1 but that was about only time I enjoyed Mugshots

These two are actually only a block from each other. Just go to both. If you want a great pizza, to play darts/pool/etc, and sip on a moldy Bud Light out of a mug or a cheap well (2 singles hold more liquor than 1 double there btw), then go to Dave's. If you want to sit at the bar and drink off a huge, fresh beer selection while watching the games with ease, then go to Halfway. You're welcome.

Yeah who wants

to go to a bar where people are doing illegal drugs when you can go to one where they are doing legal drugs!?

You're getting some horrible advice from some people in here. If I asked the best place to hang out and watch sports in Starkville and someone sent me to Harvey's, I'd be pretty pissed off.

If your main focus is the games, even if some don't want to admit it, Buffalo Wild Wings is your best bet. They also have a beer selection better than most of the other options.

Agree with all the people saying Halfway House has the best beer selection of the places mentioned. They also have my favorite wings in town. I haven't tried the other food, so I don't know about it. You could also walk to the game from here.

Mugshots has a terrible TV situation. They have small TV's and no HD. And they do a terrible job of making sure they have each TV on a different game or in some cases any game at all. Based on what you've said you're looking for, DO NOT go here, even though you may have several people suggest it.

Dave's is not where I think of when I think of watching sports, but you could do worse. As someone else said, though, there always seems to be something wrong with their draft beer.

The Veranda has very good food, and a pretty decent TV situation in the bar. This would be my suggestion if you knew you could get a seat in the bar. However, seating on Saturday will be VERY hard to come by, and much of the restaurant has no TVs at all.

Ptolemy's is small and only has two TVs. But their beer selection is second only to Halfway House (unless one of the places I haven't been to is better). This would also put you right next to campus. Finding a parking spot near here will be very difficult.

I have no opinion on Stagger In or Cowbell's since I haven't been to either.

Best beer selection is at Rosey Baby. 63 different beers on tap...a couple of

tv's in the bar and a tv at every booth. Plus the food is great, and they normally do a free house beer every time the team you're cheering for scores a touchdown.

You might be the only person there, tho. Go to the Veranda (early) or Stagger In. Maybe Halfway House and get there early for parking. An easy and safe walk to the stadium.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I live in Tupelo and have been to the Little Dooey and Mugshots. I liked the food at both but didn't remember good tv's at either and you guys confirmed that.

It sounds like Halfway House may be an option to try (we will be arriving shortly after lunch) and, if that's packed, just go to BWW.

Appreciate the suggestions. I have told my Tennessee friends that it should be pretty rowdy Sat nite but State fans are usually pretty cool, much different than Ole Piss fans. I usually pull for State when they aren't playing Tennessee so I'm looking forward to Saturday.

Thanks again!

If the game is at 8, get to Rosey Baby's at 2:30

You might have your food by kickoff. And it's not great. Years ago, my folks would come into town an insist on eating at Rosey Baby's. They are now over that idea. Granted it was good back in the day, but now it is turrible. Service is even worse. I feel bad for the Chrissey boy who appears to bust his *** but gets no help from anyone else. If they doubled their staff, halved their menu and focused on doing those items really well, I think they could get over the hump.

Over the last 10 years, all my Rosey baby experiences have been the same. Order a beer. Wait 15 minutes to get it. Wait on a server for another 10 minutes. Order food. Get it 30 minutes later. Usually a poboy with 7 medium size shrimp on it and super dry bread that seems to have sat under the heat lamp for 20 minutes. Wait on server to bring me another beer to wash the dehydrated bread down. Wait another 10 minutes to get the check. Walk out tired and dissatisfied.
