It's a tie for me between ZZ and Skynyrd. Then Allman Bros., .38 Spc., & 3 Doors Down.

I'm gonna go with the band who inspired the name in this question...

"Author Scott B. Bomar speculates the term "Southern rock" may have been coined in 1972 by Mo Slotin, writing for Atlanta's underground paper, The Great Speckled Bird, in a review of an Allman Brothers Band concert."

My family is connected to Skynard sort of. My dad went to Robert E. Lee HS in Jacksonville, Fl with Ronnie Van Zant. A few years later my mom would become the girls PE coach there and work directly with Leonard Skinner. Unfortunately she never did listen to her student Johnnie when he said she should come hear his brothers band practice in the garage.

Of course this woman would, years later, turn down the chance to smoke with Willie.

I like CCR, Don’t get me wrong. They can call themselves Southern Rock or identify however they want, but they aren’t Southern Rock. They aren’t Southern.
The Rolling Stones are not from Mississippi, Memphis, or Chicago. They are still one hell of a blues band.

Including Skynard, it’s The Allman Brothers Band.
Some good ones but not the best:
Drive By Truckers
North MS Allstars
Black Crowes
My Morning Jacket

We were looking to book a band for our class reunion and we finally settled on a Molly Hatchet cover band. After working with the booking agent we realized that we didn’t have enough money to book them so we booked Molly Hatchet instead.
Well, Molly Hatchet is a cover band by now anyway. Sadly, they’re all dead.

Most underrated band of all time, they didn't make bad music. Melissa has to be in the conversation of best song ever.

And In “Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Masterpiece if you ask. I’ve visited her tombstone in Rose Hill Cemetary in Macon where they used to hang out. That is the most southern scene you can think of - Confederate Tombstones just up the way with the flag flying, right next to the river and old train tracks. You can just feel the Bros spirit there. And Duane also rests nearby.

I saw Atlanta Rhythm Section and CDB in Jackson in the early 80s. They were legit.

For me personally, Southern Rock music has always been about the Allman Brothers Band, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Skynyrd and a few others like the Marshall Tucker Band and the Charlie Daniels Band to some extent.

I listed the Allman Brothers first, because they really were the first. These bands really needed to be seen live to be appreciated, truly. I saw the AAB a bunch of times over the years and the very best shows I got to see were a handful of shows they did in New Orleans in the early ‘70’s. Every New Years Eve for 3-4 years in a row the Allman Brothers Band played at the old Warehouse on Tchoupitoulas Street. It was an old brick warehouse which was typical construction for the area-brick and huge oak beams. The acoustics in that old building along with the caliber of musicians playing got me hooked for life. The AAB in those days were simply with peers. They were outstanding in every way.

I’ve been to Rose Hill Cemetery many times. It’s a very peaceful, beautiful place.

I saw CCR front man John Fogerty bring his band to Southaven in a joint concert with ZZ Top. Fogerty was outstanding that night. Dude can really bring it for an 80 year old. Almost felt like he was still a teenager out there. ZZ had an awful night.....they were just going through the motions. The only concert where I thought they just didn't sound very good. A few years later ZZ came to the Orpheum in Memphis with their new bassist and sounded great! RIP Dusty!

My wife's cousin was Cassie Gaines the backup singer who died in the plane crash.

current best that is carrying the banner has to be Blackberry Smoke
I am just catching up on this thread, the overall answer is a tie between Skynyrd and the Allmans, but I came to make sure someone gave proper respect to The Smoke.

They've been around a long time but kind of under the radar. Seen them live a couple times - great show and pure southern rock. They're basically the offspring of the Black Crowes', musically.
