I am talking about not reporting deals.

If you go by the NCAA data dashboard men's wrestling had the fewest number of deals approved by NIL Go between Jan 1 and Jul 31. It was between 1 and 2% of all deals (hard to tell with the pie slice not labeled because it is too small). And there appears to be a single deal worth more than $10k.

The average disclosed deal size is $880 and the median is $32. Yep, half the deals were enough to buy four Big Macs, which of course you wouldn't because you had to make weight.
Will you be providing a full statistical analysis of wrestling NIL deals?

What about school revenue sharing $ to wrestling?

If their recruiting is so good, how many of their recruits have won national championships in the last 10 years?
LMFAO. That isn't remotely the ONLY standard to measure with. ONLY 10 win it each year. Of those 10 not all are even top 10 recruits. So, year in and year out, you have anywhere from 50 to even 70(covid extended eligibility) top 10 recruits all going for those 10 spots.

Excepting injury(to me, this has been, BY FAR, the biggest consistent issue under Brands), nearly ALL of Iowa's top 10 recruits AA multiple times, with many AAing all 4 times. Of those, most make the Finals.

Top 10's Starting with Kemerer(2015):

Kemerer-3rd,4th,2nd,4th(done with a major shoulder injury)
Marinelli-6th,7th,R12(injured rib and was not allowed to wrestleback),5th Young was this year in the 20's and AA'd twice.
Lee-1st,1st,1st,6th
Warner-7th,4th,2nd,5th Murin was 44th that class and AA'd.
Cassioppi-3rd,7th,4th,DQ was not allowed to wrestle his senior year due to the gambling fiasco.
Kennedy-R16,R12,4th, ?
Ayala-(1-2),2nd,2nd, ?
Kueter-8th,?,?,?
Arnold-R16,?,?,? Block was 22 that class and we will see how he does when finally healthy.
Ferrari- In his 1st season
DeLuca-redshirting
Ludington-redshirting
Mocco-incoming
Bachmann, Kenny, Borge and Amato are all class of '27 top recruits.

Again, it isn't bad recruiting holding them back. The one CONSTANT negative has been injuries and the gambling fiasco happening in ONLY Iowa.

Now, I will say recruiting is a huge factor why PSU is so far ahead. But, it simply isn't fair to even try to compare to them. They are a Unicorn. No DI team has recruited anywhere like them, including Iowa under Gable. As good as the above is when compared to EVERYONE else, PSU has had that many top 10's on the team AT THE SAME TIME.....

And you just assume they're happening .
Yes, I am.

And so is this guy:
NIL Go started in June. Also they have a 2 month backlog so many deals are in limbo currently. I haven't heard of any deals that are being paid to wrestlers and aren't being turned it yet. People act like deals weren't happening in sports prior to NIL people have been cheating forever and that will never stop.

The NCAA data is a little light/high level at this point, but some things can be backed into. For example, it looks like there were ~117 wrestling deals with only 1 greater than $10k.

It is something I am keeping an eye on for when the data improves.

When I looked into recruiting using Willie's Big Board data it looked like this.

From 2013 - 2023 Iowa brought in 7 top 10 recruits (not including transfers). That tied them with Michigan and trailed only PSU (18), anOSU (18), and OSU 12 during that period.

Based on results, Iowa got the same average number of AAs from their top recruits as PSU and more than anOSU, and OSU. But PSU, an OSU, and OSU had a higher average finish among their AAs.

The real story for Iowa is volume. They need three times as many top 10 recruits as they have gotten recently. And with the latest round of recruiting results it appears they are doing just that.

As an aside, Cornell is somewhat of a unicorn hear. They make up for their lack of volume with very high placement.

Beth won't even consider replacing them. Carver is close to a sellout now, and in the last couple of years, Tom Brands basically raised 32 million for a new facility with very little help from the University.

With that said, if she is not challenging him on the staff composition, the reasons why our Iowa offense is so bad, then no one will. The media is afraid to ask him tough questions.

I am much more concerned with the pattern of performance from 141 and 157 this far this year than the loss to ISU. It’s early season and ISU has a solid team. How the team performs in March is absolutely what matters most. We used to beat PSU from time to time in duals then they would pound us at Nationals. Yesterday I thought Peterson looked much improved, same with Block. I think Keuter is not 100% and honestly looked better last year against Bastida. Ayala looked good the first half of the match, not sure what happened there, maybe Frost had a plan to conserve energy until later in the match because he went from 0 to 60 as the match went on. However I think new assistant coaches and an overhaul and emphasis on HWC is what would benefit us most right now.

i think Iowa will always be a top program because of the fans.
Anyone who has watched Ayala over the past few years knew as soon as he got that first TD he'd slow down and get defensive. Frost simply didn't allow it to happen, you know the way our coaches used to compete and train their athletes to do so. The ending of that match was predictable once it was clear Frost wasn't going to have gas tank issues.

This is just patently false. ISU has the best team, BY FAR, that they have had since KJ took over the last of Sanderson's guys. Did you not pay attention to what each guy was ranked and how many of them have AA'd????

125: Poulin is an AA and two time R12 that is ranked in the top 10.
133: Frost is an AA and 1x R12 that is ranked in the top 6.
141: Echemendia is an AA and is ranked top 6.
149: Johnson is ranked TOP 2.....
157: Zerban is an AA and 1x R12 that is ranked 3rd.
165: Euton is their one "weak" spot and he is ranked 22nd.
174: Gaitan is an R12 that is ranked 11th.
184: Dean is an R16 and ranked 10th.
197: Elam is a 4X AA and ranked 2nd.
285: Bastida is an AA and 1X R12 and is ranked #1. Only things that have really held him back are injuries.

That is 6 AA's and basically 9 guys ranked in the top 10(Gaitan will move up). Saying that Iowa just fell back to ISU is as dumb an argument as blaming recruiting. Tell us you know nothing about the actual wrestling team other than the score..........

Look, I understand wanting more. I even understand wanting to blame someone. I just can't ignore when people make incredibly dumb points to make that argument. If you just said the situation sucks and you hate losing and Iowa needs to fix it, I wouldn't say you are wrong. But make sure you ACTUALLY know what you are talking about before going past that point...
Yep, we didn't lose to the Sisters of the Poor. Like it or not, Iowa State has a good solid team, as does Iowa. They wrestled better this time and came away with a win, so credit to them. I'm not gonna go back and look at the last 20 years, but I'm assuming there were some tight scores flipped by the Hawks winning 1 more tossup match than they did.

Hawks have some work to do for sure. We'll see how it goes.

HS kids will now have to file all NIL deals with the clearinghouse once they enroll.
And just like there was before NIL there will always be ways to take care of the athletes financially. Whether its post grad RTC income promises, odd jobs, housing, debt repayment assistance... the big $ donor supported programs will find a way if they want to.

I spoke with someone in the sports commission and they said wrestling wouldn't be getting valuations above 100K . Studies showed that wrestling was getting the 3rd most $ through NIL deals behind football and basketball and wrestling. Rev share is the new NIL. The HS NIL having to go through NIL Go will be interesting in the future and how they will handle that . Will athletes owe the $ back or be deemed ineligible

Who is getting better when they transfer here?
How many stall calls are we getting vs the other team. We seem to lack aggression.
For the current roster:

Peterson beat Spratley but decked next match so still out but leaning towards improved.
Bailey definitely not better.
Woods not apparent one way or the other yet. He has moments, both good and bad.
Cali definitely better wrestler since transfer.
Mo have to say better with limited comparisons other than his freestyle this summer.

The one number that immediately jumps off the page there is the 25 championships from 18 top 10 recruits. PSU has been able to turn their high level recruits into champions in a way that no other school can match, which is a big reason why they continue to get the most.

Though it has been reported that Sanderson was offered a piece of the revenue to share or more scholarships and he chose more scholarships.

Cael has stated he isn't too interested in wrestlers that focus on NIL as a material factor for their school choice. He prefers a different priority based on their love of the sport (to include becoming the best possible including NCAA, world, and Olympic champion). He seems to have that luxury, and it appears to be working especially well lately.

Tell me you literally have no clue other than you want to complain about more than them not winning when you want them to.....

Look, their recruiting has been consistently better than everyone but PSU, PERIOD. The transfer portal is just important and even PSU has benefited greatly from it. Hell, their very best wrestler is a transfer(Mesenbrink). Don't forget Welsh and Nagao. Even a team that recruits that many top 10's still has 3 transfers.

Iowa has 7 or so top 10ish in the room RIGHT NOW! Deluca is top 10. Ayala was top 5. Block was top 20. Kennedy was top 5. Arnold was top 10. Ferrari was #1/2. Ludington was just outside top 10. Keuter was #1/2. Caliendo has been one of the best transfers possible in all of the country, excepting Mesenbrink. Peterson is proving to be a very promising transfer, giving DeLuca a year to mature. Bailey and Williams have a lot to prove, but I would rather they take their lumps now, than at NCAA's like the ASU guys did last year.

Finally, Iowa has Mocco coming in next year along with a BANNER class of '27. Simply put, the ISSUE is most certainly NOT recruiting. What it REALLY comes down to in March is HEALTH. They are consistently having multiple guys be so banged up that they either can't even go when it matters most, or are shells of themselves when they do. THAT is the biggest issue that needs fixing and I would love to hear someone in the actual know come up with a reason why it keeps happening and how it is being addressed...
When do these top ten recruits start winning individual national titles? When do the lesser recruits win titles like the Gable years? When do these top ten recruits peak by the national tourney their senior years? We all want Iowa to be the team they should be but disregarding valid criticism does not make you a better or more informed fan. Brands has admitted to having dropped the ball on recruiting for years and the programs position is entirely on him.

We could see that change in the future but he took more scholarships this time around.
If I had a son who was Penn State fan but possibly might not be able to make the starting lineup I'd love for him to get an education at Penn State for free.

I'm old enough to remember the days when I college scholarship moght save a lot of money lol.

ReAl Woods did pretty good.at iowa.
Without looking it feels like the multi-year transfers did much better than the single year guys. But that is probably true everywhere.

Edit: This is why I shouldn't post without looking first. It was a one year guy who won the only title by a transfer to Iowa in recent years.

That’s such a weird thing to focus on. Stall calls? Aggression? Why not…match points? Take downs? Bonus points?

Aggression like that works to a certain degree, until it doesn’t. And then a better, more technical wrestler turns your aggression against you.

Watch the Marcus Blaze vs Bo Bassett, Senior WTT 65kg consi semi match. Bassett throws the kitchen sink at Blaze the entire 6 minutes but loses to a guy who was simply a better wrestler despite being 10lbs smaller. Blaze chooses his moment very well and finishes; Bassett just pours on the gas with nothing really happening other than getting Blaze put on the clock.

The number of generational wrestlers coming out of high school is staggering. It will be interesting to see how they fall into weights.

I think most of us on this board are willing to take that chance...

Bring in Askren. He'd be top 2 or 3 year one with his former AWA academy kids portaling in. Plus, the product on the mat would be a lot of fun to watch!
I’d give a nut to bring him in. His wrestling mindset is exactly what is needed, he has an avenue to kids that before would never look at Iowa, and it would show that tnt want to change and will go outside Iowa city for that

Thats why Nolf would be my pick as long as he had a veteran head assistant to help him. Nolf brings a funk factor like Askren could. He is very well known and would be a great recruiter. Plus out of all the former PSU legends...Nolf just flat out feels like the right guy to embrace Iowa and midwest folks. Maybe even more so than David Taylor could have.

Didn't say Ben. I don't want him anywhere in Iowa City. I said Nolf ...with veteran assistant coach. A Zalesky, Barry Davis type who has a year or two left to help the new young star coach learn the ropes and then ride off into the sunset.

I wonder how Tom feels about his coaching results? No one wants it more or has higher expectations for the program than Tom. He cares so much about Iowa wrestling that I don’t think he will want to leave until he makes the Hawks #1 again so he finishes on top. Unfortunately, he may never get them on top again. I suppose it is the curse of following Gable and the unrealistic expectations we all have for the program.
