Yea he could come in and be a reserve for 10 mins a game for both 4 and 5. I could see thatYeah I don't disagree. But, I do think you have to give a little leeway to returning players. I'm not saying don't grab portal guys, but I don't want to be like Duke where they recruit over anyone and everyone just because some new guy is ranked slightly better. They have zero loyalty. Not even a bit. And I don't think that's a reputation you want to have, as it will make reserve/bench players not want to come.
Again, in BGs example, we can't use him as a starting PF or C this coming season.. he's more in line for a reserve role still. So I'm fine recruiting the right guys who can start. Maybe BGs time is the following season, or maybe he decides to go elsewhere. I just don't want to see us kick players to the curb the way Duke does. I don't think that's good business and I think theres a very reasonable middle ground where you can still create the team you want while also working with the guys who chose to come here the year prior.
His dad AND Jaden himself stated that the reason he chose UK was how Coach Pope allowed the Center MORE freedom to do things other programs didn’t. Like bring the ball up the floor, start the offense, allow the offense to flow through him and let him play aggressively on the defensive end.I think JQ will be able to hit open 3s at Kentucky. He will have the spacing and he is a Swiss Army knife nightmare matchup at the 4. There’s more than one way to skin a cat and JQ is a defensive and offensive nightmare for opponents. We will have to do some things difference to enhance our defense. I completely disagree that he’s a center. He’s a Pf in the nba and will have to develop a shot ala pj Washington or Patrick Patterson. The guy was projected as top 5. I doubt a guy who is 6’9” coveted by the nba can’t shoot. And I just can’t use freshmen numbers for an injured player and a guy who probably only took a handful of shots. Best for the team is a Pf who is a potential superstar. I wouldn’t be surprised if he saw time at the 3. I don’t think he’d go to a school to play center. Definitely leave a big chunk of his skill set behind doing that.
I think the coach has to sell the players on the advantages of staying in school. I'd tell them the Swen Nader story. Swen only played center and came in with Bill Walton so he never averaged over 8-10 minutes per game in college when he could've been an All-American candidate at any other school. But he won multiple championships and it did not hurt his NBA career at all. The NBA guys still knew about him and he still was a 1st round pick and had a nice pro career. We might need some more years of the Portal to get a complete picture but I wonder if there's any data on the rate people transfer more than one time (ie. do most just transfer once and stay at a school or does being a transfer make them more likely to transfer again in the future).
I ask this because we'll run into a similar issue we did with Cal. We need people to come here and stay lol.
A big part of that will be:
1) Have enough NIL to compete with other schools and keep people around
2) Pope has to create a culture where people want to stay here.
I appreciate the good discussion, Wildcats1st. I agree with a number of things you said. We both can see Quaintance’s potential, just in different ways I think. I agree that a healthy Quaintance could be a nightmare to handle athletically. He reminds me somewhat of Zion Williamson in regard to potential overpowering athleticism. And he definitely has time to improve his weaknesses (he’s only 17 for goodness sake). But he likely needs quite a bit more development time if he is to become a decent enough shooter that other teams won’t be begging him to shoot from the 3pt. line (currently a tentative looking set-shot thing which he thankfully rarely takes and much, much more rarely makes). But will he be at UK beyond this season to see it? Again, however, in the one season he can still be a big help in other areas with his powerful athleticism (which I assume he will still have to practically the same degree).I think JQ will be able to hit open 3s at Kentucky. He will have the spacing and he is a Swiss Army knife nightmare matchup at the 4. There’s more than one way to skin a cat and JQ is a defensive and offensive nightmare for opponents. The only difference was Amari dribbled it up some and we played a bit faster when everyone was healthy. But the half-court offense always ran through Amari when he was in.We didn't play that way when Butler, Kerr and Robinson were all healthy.
Seriously underrated analysis here. That's the rub with the Zoom/DHO stuff. Pressure the handler and the line is wide open. Play off of him and the passer can see the entire floor.I like what Pope does with the 5 out high. If the opposing big comes out to guard him, it opens up the inside. If the other big stays home, our big can see and pass over smaller guys. But it takes a good passing big to make it work. I can see using it with a tall 4 that can beat his man off the dribble too.

the art of faking seems to be lost in todays' gameGarrison could easily become a Freshman T.Jones if he would focus heavily on ball handling vs 1v1 defense. Being able to face up and jab step, straight line drive bully ball to the paint to finish a dunk or jump stop floater would make him a tough matchup for most 4s… I think he could easily shoot 35% from 3 to keep teams from sagging
who?Just chatter, but i'm hearing BG and Jizzle James are talking and UC is a good possibility if he hits the portal.
There are seemingly precious few across the nation that play like Amari but then Amari didn't look the part before Pope got ahold of him either.Do we have anyone who can play like amari? And JQ someone said he can’t play the 4 I beg to differ especially in popes offense.
I think a more currently relatable tale needs to be told.I think the coach has to sell the players on the advantages of staying in school. I'd tell them the Swen Nader story. Gaboon VipersThere's a few species that do as you kinda alluded to. I usually could tell you but I'm drawing a blank. They are all venomous too.
Well then he's obviously listening to Kerr if this is even true.Guard for Cincy.
Those. The longest fanged snake in the world and they're quite beautiful. This coming from someone who's scared to death of snakes. Or venomous snakes I should say. Good memory though by you.Gaboon Vipers
Yes, something more recent would be better. But it remains true that nobody ever failed in the NBA because they didn't play enough minutes or average enough points in college.I think a more currently relatable tale needs to be told.
These kids don't care about an example from fifty years ago.
It is a very different world now. The NBA just cares way more about potential now.
To me, they are the nastiest looking snakes.Those. The longest fanged snake in the world and they're quite beautiful. This coming from someone who's scared to death of snakes. Or venomous snakes I should say. Good memory though by you.
About 3 or 4 years ago I heard my dog make a super awkward bark. I go on the kitchen and there's a copperhead trying to hide. It was like 4 in the morning. It took me an hour to get it out with a broom. I was shook. There was a section under my door missing and I went and bought a new door the second they opened lol.
Really? Well I can certainly understand it.To me, they are the nastiest looking snakes.
Disagree. It needs to be seen as initiated by the player to control the narrative and lessen the impact on any decision Pope has made or may make. Future recruiting and player retention depends on it. Honestly, regrettably, isn't necessarily the best policy in this type of transaction in this environment. If Pope has plans beyond BG, the "right way" would be to just be upfront and honest..and tell him to hit the road and enter the portal. I don't think there is any mystery to how it should be handled. I hope we keep BG.
I find that hard to believe. We need another big anyway. Doesn’t seem like something Pope would do.Some scuttlebutt on Trilly's discord (not from Trilly) that we may be trying to politely get BG out the door so we can take Alvaro
Garrison is an ok player, but I assume he wants a lot of money and starters minutes and he certainly has not proven he can be a starting level center for a final 4 team. Best just to move on a get a player with proven production and not have the attitude.Time to use the bat phone our favorite Spanish pf. I'm sure pope has talked to BG ad nauseum about his role next year and if he is still acting like this let's just move on from him.
it’s the players that have changed. You won’t see many developmental players on rosters as most can get playing time and even more money by transferring.Need to make up our minds as a program. We either try and build a team or hire 1 year mercenaries every season. For so many who proclaimed they hated the OD Cal created now they are clamoring for it when an under grad isn't a superstar right out of the gate
So many GREAT UK players over the years weren't world beaters thier first year here. Delk .Miller , Washington Padgett to name just a FEW. Today some of you guys would have run them off sayi.g they are not " good" enough after 1 season. I hope Garrison stays and we actually do try to build rosters over time, but I doubt it happens, too many of you really deep down don't have the patience for that regardless of what you SAY
Yeah he might have grown into it with more time but man this year everytime he got it out high and looked for the back door cut I yelled NO!!!! Because you knew he felt like he needed to thread a pass in whether it was there or not every time.I would too but I never wanted him to be the point center. I didn’t think it was right for him. I still hope he stays and will be willing to adapt his role as needed but I’m also understanding that he waited his turn and might feel some type of way about JQ.
You see what you see.Never said anything about Amari bringing the ball up. This conversation is about Amari running the offense from the top of the key.
Who cares about bringing the ball up the court, that has nothing to do with runming a half vourt set offense.
Cal has completely brain washed about half our fan base. Folks keep demanding 1 and done mercenaries instead of trying to build and develop a team. Cals gone but his ideas remain embedded in fans .minds. we must have superstars and NBA players to reach the FF despite just watching 2 teams with no NBA rated: stars: in this year's title game. If BG wants to be here I want him here. He is a Wildcat and deserves our respect and support instead of constant criticism and vitriol.
Cal's shadow is still over so much of the discussions among our fans (especially on this board, which has a well earned bad reputation across other fan sites, College basketball reddit, etc.). We have people who think we need a bunch of top 25 recruits or we're junk. And you have people who have such PTSD from the later Cal years that don't think we can get anything worthwhile out of freshmen other than sitting on the bench waiting to be sophomores.Cal has completely brain washed about half our fan base. Well, considering you thought running the offense meant bringing the ball up the court, I think it's just best to leave it right here. You see what you see.
That’s ok.
I’m glad I won’t have to watch him play again.
