...universities that also had I-A programs which kind of fits the Big 10 profile:

Iowa State, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Syracuse. Notre Dame ranked around #20 and Nebraska ranked #100 96-- both in US News and World Report.

Dividing in half east/west...

Geographical Possibility #1

EAST
Penn State
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
Purdue

WEST
Illinois
Northwestern
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Nebraska/Iowa State/Notre Dame (South Bend is further east than Bloomington and West Lafayette, but closer to Chicago which is why I placed them in the West.)

Geographical Possibility #2

EAST
Penn State
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
Syracuse/Rutgers/Maryland/Pittsburgh/Miami (Ohio)

WEST
Illinois
Northwestern
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Purdue

Of course, the Big 10 might not divide geographically and just go with the Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler divisions.

Edited to add link to post in NAFOOM thread and correct Nebraska's ranking.

you all are most likely correct but there are a lot of the old boosters from my understanding talking to our agents up in Arkansas that really miss the rivalry of the SWC games. Yes they could schedule them OOC but the SEC is already tough enough for them with out having to play Big 12 schools.

Just a thought.

But there's probably just as many of them that would rather see them stay in the SEC. Most all of their fans under 50 remember more years of Arkansas being in the SEC than they remember of them in the SWC. But the real kicker would be when the AD takes a look at what their check from the Big 12 would be and compares it to what their check from the SEC is. That'll end any real consideration of Arkansas to the Big 12.

I doubt they would put Michigan, Ohio State & Penn State all in the same division. I see a North/South scenario:

North:
1. Wisconsin
2. Minnesota
3. Michigan
4. Iowa (or Syracuse and send Iowa to the South.)
5. Northwestern
6. Michigan State

South:
1. Ohio State
2. Indiana
3. Penn State
4. Illinois
5. Purdue
6. ???? Missouri, ND, Pitt or Rutgers

arkansas has been in the SEC almost 20 years now. hog fans' desire to rekindle old rivalries is becoming more distant every year. outside of your older folks, there's not many arkansas fans that would prefer the big 12. i have a lot of friends over there and they get a lot of satisfaction out of beating lsu, ole miss, state, and bama. we may not think they have big rivals in the SEC, but they've sure developed a hatred for many SEC west teams.

on another note, if a big 12 team such as mizzou or iowa state went to the big 10, i think TCU would have a solid chance at the big 12.

...Notre Dame also would be a North possibility because it's in Northern Indiana fairly close to the Michigan state line and Chicago.

Both my brother in-laws are graduates and I hate hearing that BYU smack. Like BYU would be any good in the SEC.

In that case, shifting Iowa to the South and putting ND in the mix would create two pretty balanced divisions. The only downside I see is that OSU & Michigan always play the final game of the season. In the event they both won their divisions, they would end up playing back-to-back games against one another. Hopefully they wouldn't be too stubborn to move that match up to the middle of the season. Possibly have Michigan play MSU or ND the final weekend and OSU could play Penn State.

1. Tradition. Tulane is an original SEC member.

2. Natural rivalry with LSU could develop. It would be like UT/Vandy, sure, but it also makes a heck of a lot more sense that LSU/Arkansas Golden Boot thing that has been forced upon us.

3. It wouldn't mess up the SEC's East/West alignment. If you move Vandy to the West, which is what I think would happen if you added Clemson/FSU or whoever it would either break up UT/Vandy or even worse UT/Bama.

4. Easy win. It's not like the SEC is hurting for strength in football. They would replace a middle tier team with a bottom tier team- but one that has a very good academic reputation. (We care about academics wink, wink).

5. It would give teams like MSU/Ole Miss that draw well at bowl games a better chance to go to bowls.

I meant that ND was being arrogant, not Catholics. I probably typed it wrong.

they've sure developed a hatred for many SEC west teams.

They are such an insular bunch. They dislike anyone who has the insolent audacity to defeat the Hogs.

The big bad SEC get's to help out the "down on its luck" New Orleans institution. So, in instances where the BCS conferences get picked up for having unfair advantages over non-BCS schools, we get to say "17-off, we saved Tulane".

throughout the last 15 yrs, most of them list "playing for a conference title" as being a top priority.
ND is having trouble recruiting because of their arrogance and a no need policy to join a conference.
I dont care who their coach is, theyre likely to have real problems there recruiting if they dont get into a conference in the next 5 yrs.

I got pounded on last week for saying the same thing. I also added academic standard were too high and that piss a few the message board experts off. They went on to talk about how high ND recruiting classes have been ranked the last four years and how uninformed I was. I say rivals and scouts are BS. Rivals had Ole Miss Preseason 14th. That alone should disqualify them from ever being creditable. Any recruit rating is subject to human error and bias. I remember last year when Chris Garrett was considering Miss State he was a 3 star QB. A few days later after committing to LSU he was moved up to a 4 star recruit. Plus I will add that the only numbers that count is Wins and Lost and TV ratings and those numbers don't bid well for ND. Until they join a conference and let more dumb asses in they will not be relevant.

I agree with you full heartily!
