Big Ten vs SEC

So I am watching the Big East vs SEC Basketball tourney and I got to thinking. Why would they not do the same with Football. It would be great to see the 2 conferences match up on 1 weekend. Half the SEC Teams would travel one year, then be at home the next. Wouldn't it be great to see an Ohio St vs MSU in Starkville? Or an Ole Miss vs PennSt matchup in Oxford? All I am saying is both conferences set aside one weekend to play the games. The ratings would be unreal!!! Any thoughts?

The Big 10 (or any other conference) wants to be obligated to play the SEC every year? Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan would win every now and then, but those other teams are going to get spanked. Every year. They don't have the depth that we do. It's not a good deal for them.

but I doubt it would ever happen. Seems like the Big Ten commissioner has made some disparaging comments about the SEC in the past. If something like this did happen, it would more likely be something like State vs Purdue and OM vs Northwestern.

Matchups are pulled out of a hat. Lets say we do get Purdue, I am not so sure we eat them this year. What a great Saturday that would be. We would all be glued to the TV that day pulling for the SEC

Pennsylvania State has had such weak *** schedules historically. No wonder he's got so many wins.

Not to mention the Big 11 snobbery.

something like Big 10 Champ vs. SEC champ all the way down to 11th vs. 11th. And then the Big 10 needs to add one more team so everyone can play everyone. Or better yet, they could sign a 12-year agreement where every team is scheduled against every other, and it's just luck of the draw if you happen to catch Michigan when they're in a down year. And if it was a success, they could renew it so every team could visit every other team.

I think it was something like a home and home with Illinois, Indiana, MSU or Wisconsin. Ohio State or Michigan were not mentioned.

I think it would be great! I'd rather play someone like that than WVU or GA Tech. To me, its kind of like our bowl match ups. Carolina teams or Texas teams. Win or lose BORING! Play some <17>games out of your region. Even though we ended up 1-3 (thanks WAC refs), I loved our home and home with BYU and Oregon.

Nothing historically weak about Paterno's schedule at all. Up until the last few years, he had only played 4 teams that are currently in I-AA in over 30 seasons. For reference, Bobby Bowden had played 20 while coaching at West Virginia and Florida State. In 2005, when Penn State finished 11-1 and 3rd in the country, their schedule strength was #17 per Sagarin. That same year Florida's was #40, LSU's was #50, Alabama's was #59, Mississippi State's was #73. In 1999, when Penn State was #1 going into the 10th game of the season, their schedule strength was #8. In 1994, undefeated Penn State's SOS was hugely tougher than Nebraska's and under the current system Penn State would have been a clear #1 going into the championship game.</p>

I am betting ESPN would be willing to pony up some money for something like that, especially with the TV deal we already have. Anything to increase the number of quality OOC games they could broadcast.

It would have to be set about 5 years in advance though, and I'm betting a lot of schools would be against iti.

We State fans know from experience that playing a tough out of conference game will only hurt your chances of going to a bowl. (see: Oregon, W Va, Ga Tech, etc... )

and it would work out just fine.

Byrne said last summer he called all of the weaker Big 10 schools and was rebuffed. I forgot which AD it was, but one of them said the Big 10 commissioner had expressly forbidden their AD's to schedule SEC games.
