Biggest disappointment thus far?????OL, Brauchle, DB's, DL's failure to pressure QB?
I expected us to name the score, and we kept fumbling the ball- or should I say Ducre kept fumbling the ball, and our stupid WR's kept holding, although that seemed to be corrected at the half.
I wasn't really impressed with our QB play. Yes, Relf played well, but how would he have fared against an SEC defense today? I didn't like the two QB rotation, with us rotating Lee, then Relf, but I'm not going to get all up in arms about it because I hope it was because of the opponent that we were playing, and if that's the case, I'm OK with that. Tyson Lee didn't impress me at all either when he wasn't spasing out.
Our o-line looked better to me. Not that they are great by any means, but they looked better, they looked bigger, and they looked like someone actually attempted to coach them instead of sitting around eating chee-to's with them on a couch all off season.
Bumphis looked like he is going to be a special player. But at the same time, as far as our WR's go, we have no one that can stretch the field. They can catch little, short passes, which is nice, but we really need McRae and Wilder to step up and give us a deep threat, which we haven't had in forever so that teams won't pack in their defense aGAIN for the 12th year in a row and blow our offense up, "daring us to run".
Ducre- all I have to say is this- WTF? HOLD ON TO THE BALL!!!!! Elliot looked pretty good. Sorry Bruiser. Stallworth looked good to. The only consolation I have here and about the offense is that Dixon didn't play. If we had AD in the lineup instead of some SPD officer trying to save the universe from the evil MSU football players, we probably get at least two more first half TD's. I can't see JSU stopping AD, and I'm pretty sure that he likely would have busted at least one big run for a TD, and then sat on the sideline for the second half drinking Gatorade.
I thought the defense looked pretty good overall. I don't know why people are complaing about a lack of a pass rush. Especially when we held them to what? Five first downs until they had three on their TD drive against our third string. Rutland made some plays with his legs, but a lot of those were because we flushed him out of the pocket, and even then, we were able to stop him most of the time. They completed TWO long passes, and even then we caught the guy from behind. Rutland is not a D-I QB, but he is a D-I athlete. Fletcher Cox is an absolute beast.
I was also disappointed in Brauchle. I don't know if it was nerves, or the weather or what, but he has to hit those FG's. I thought he kicked off pretty well, and we can maybe keep him there and use DePasquale for FG's is Brauchle doesn't start to convert them. Hutchins looked good. JSU's ST's were horrible, so it's hard to say that we made a lot of improvement, but I think we have.
