Biggest sporting event in MS history

I’m asking, I don’t know and have been trying to think of one for the last couple of hours today .
What brought this question on was was one of only two of my Rebel friends/acquaintances said he was heading to MS (from GA) for the biggest sporting event in MS history. I know what he meant but I asked if he was able to travel back in time now?
But this got me to thinking, do Rebel fans really think this is the biggest sporting event in Mississippi history and what is THE biggest sporting event in MS history?
I’ve never really thought about it I guess and I have not seen our friend Rick Cleveland opine on this subject either.
(And this particular rebel is not from Mississippi, has never lived in Mississippi nor did he or his wife attend Mississippi, but his two sons are graduates.)

A game against Tulane?

Rick has weighed in, and it's not this game. It's not even second. This is unquestionably it.

Mississippi's biggest sports event ever? You wouldn't want to argue with John L. - Mississippi Today

I had an OM friend say the same thing the other day. That must be the latest theme coming out of Oxford. I laughed and asked why would anyone pay a premium price to watch OM stomp Tulane again? I also said Tulane and James Madison had no business in the playoffs.

Missed that article by Rick but he actually kind of nailed it and I can’t believe I didn’t think of this ( was thinking too much along the lines of college athletics) but the 1999 Women’s US Open at Old Waverly is THE correct answer!
No debate, no discussion, that is absolutely it!

Under the circumstances I say yes it is. It's a chance to win a national title so has to be labeled as such in my mind.

Reb buddy said he was not going to Oxford, but would be going to Sugar Bowl.
Makes sense. Unless you have a place in Oxford and just want to have a little fun despite the traffic, why not. Lots of new football fans dropping $5K for a place to stay and treating this like the Oxford Super Bowl to get all drunk and rowdy and flex on the Green Wave.

Better to go down to New Orleans to have fun and salute the end to a good season and raise a toast to the team and the middle finger to KiffyPop the Himbo.

This guy has a 1.5 hr drive to Oxford, and a season ticket holder.

Under the circumstances unless they get past Georgia and into the playoffs in January with all the good teams, then its not really an actual "chance".

I mean, unless you consider State had a chance to win March Madness the last few years by getting into round 1 NCAA tourney game. Just because there are fewer teams does not mean there is a realistic chance for the 12 teams playing in December.

The event that attracted the most people would be the biggest. So it’d be between the LPGA US Open and John L. Sullivan bare knuckles championship.

It’s got the highest stakes, but it’s not going to be a good game. I would say it is but it’s just not going to be very exciting for anyone except their fans after half time

Higher than the last bare knuckle heavyweight champion? I think not. Even if UM wins they just beat Tulane.

Nothing will never and I mean never never, never top the National Tobacco Spitting Contest held in Raleigh Mississippi. People from around the world came like it was the Olympics. So, suck it Ole Miss.

Well then he certainly seems imminently qualified to determine the biggest sporting event in Mississippi history.

I'm so surprised he didn't attend Ole Miss. I would think it would have been instrumental in achieving this level of unwarranted arrogance.

Apparently there are no history majors at Ole Miss because this isn't even the biggest event in their own history. Have they forgotten beating Joe Montana and #3 Notre Dame in Jackson in 1977? Notre Dame went on to be 11-1 that year.

Hate to be the one or several to say this, but it’s the game in Oxford Saturday. US Women’s Open was big, but nobody really cared about that if we’re being honest.

Although I did see Superstar Bill Dundee take on Jerry Lawler during one of their feuds in a ****** brick building among about 500 rednecks in Tupelo one Friday night in the late 70s.

No. Because they have no shot of winning the next one.

Georgia will demolish whoever wins. We all know that. This is sort of an exhibition itself. If Lane had stayed…..maybe.

I’d say the Mississippi Mayhem Saturdays in 2014 were bigger.

I could maybe buy the Georgia/OM Sugar Bowl IF OM just rolls up Tulane. Perhaps they have a punchers chance.
