Apparently there are no history majors at Ole Miss because this isn't even the biggest event in their own history. Have they forgotten beating Joe Montana and #3 Notre Dame in Jackson in 1977? Notre Dame went on to be 11-1 that year.
Joe Montana was on the bench that game. Rusty Lisch played & went 11-25 with 2 pick. While a hall of fame QB Sat in the bench.

I hate to tell yall but this is the biggest sporting event in Mississippi history. Nobody cares about women’s golf or a rag tag bare knuckles boxing match over 100 years ago.

No. Because they have no shot of winning the next one.

Georgia will demolish whoever wins. We all know that. This is sort of an exhibition itself. If Lane had stayed…..maybe.

I’d say the Mississippi Mayhem Saturdays in 2014 were bigger.

I could maybe buy the Georgia/OM Sugar Bowl IF OM just rolls up Tulane. Perhaps they have a punchers chance.
Georgia beat them by 1 score at home a couple of months ago. They will be favored but this will not be some unthinkable upset if OM beats them in the next round.

Hate to be the one or several to say this, but it’s the game in Oxford Saturday. US Women’s Open was big, but nobody really cared about that if we’re being honest.
If OM were playing Oregon or Bama or Notre Dame, I’d put it in the Top 2 or 3 but they’re playing Tulane in a rematch where they won by whatever just a couple of months ago.
Hard to get really excited about a rematch vs Tulane even if it is a playoff game.

US Women’s Open in West Point is still #1 and I’m not sure what would top it unless we have at some point a Egg Bowl matchup vs 2 Top five teams.
I would put State vs Auburn in 2014 in the Top three or four overall.

Ric Flair wrestling in Jackson was a bigger deal

That said, I do think having a CFP game is a big deal, but, i think collectively when STATE was #1 and UM #2.....I just think that was a bigger deal.

I think the "Tulane" brand detracts from the weight of hosting this game......

Now, if I had a free ticket, I would be there in a minute

Georgia allowed 1 yard in the fourth quarter. Scored 17 points.

Can't be that big of a deal when no one will remember or care about it a year from now. Like the games for SMU, Boise State, Tennessee, Arizona State last year. 90% of the college football world can't even recall the names of those teams today.

This is like someone from any of those four teams claiming that history will forever remember their games last year. They were forgotten 2 weeks later. Same situation this year.

Man, history will forever remember Penn State's historic run in 2024. "Biggest game in the history of Pennsylvania." The value is gone the minute the game is over.

So the mythical national championships Mississippi has won there was no big home game they had to win.

I would only add that, as of yesterday, tickets for this game were still available according to their website. So, it's tough to say it's the biggest sporting event in the state's history.

I think it being Tulane makes it a moderately important event. If for some reason they make a deeper run, maybe it's more significant in hindsight.

It's the answer to a trivia question that will never go away.
Unfortunately, it's felt pretty trivial for some time now.

Choking against Bama, getting boat raced by the our rival, and looking uncoached in the Orange Bowl (against Georgia 17n Tech), is all I remember about that season.

Sad.

Never want to hear any OM grumbling about NC State/covid and tournament path ease in our CWS ever again. The rebs have certainly benefitted this year from an obvious seeding mismatch.

Yes, it will be.

This is the playoffs. You see what the good, favored teams did last year. Georgia will be motivated and will play well. Ole Miss will literally have to play lights out, mistake free football.......without its head coach.

1 year of data is not enough to prove anything long term. The look ahead line to that is UGA -5.5. That is hardly some earth shattering upset.

Let’s face it, the Leadership at Ole Miss-Oxford-Lafayette County is running Circles around MSU-Starkville-Oktibbeha County Leadership.

True. They got a home bowl game against Tulane that they've spun into the event of the century for the great State of Mississippi.

Listened to a minute or two of their tailgate show on 93.7. The host were saying it's a light crowd in the grove so far. The other chimed in and said set up fees went up and people opted out to save money for New Orleans. There is also hotel rooms unsold according to them.

Some other guy estimated there will be 75-100k on campus for the game. I bet they announce 70k in attendance. True or not.

It would be a really big deal if they were playing a competitive opponent, such as we're watching in College Station right now. It still is, being the first playoff game in the state, but could be even better.

We'll have to be on our best behavior this afternoon. Wife's sister, an OM grad, and hubby are coming over to watch the game.

And to add insult to injury, ESPN 1 (the main espn channel) picked up today’s basketball game vs Memphis in Starkville for the same time slot.
Higher view average for the entire game. More ad sales. For a regular season basketball game. Dang that is very telling. Football playoffs aren't king of TV.

Warner Brothers made a good bid though for these non premier December games.

Really starting to see these December games have the feel of the First Four feel like the march madness play in games

I mean, did it?

I can honestly say in 42 years I have never even watched 30 seconds of a women’s golf major on TV, and I don’t know that I could name anyone else who has, either.

We earned our seed/opponent by going 11-1. State was able to avoid the hottest team in the CWS because they had a head cold.

Hottest and best team in Omaha was wearing Maroon. We would have been playing Vandy for the title anyway (Vandy had already beat them anyway), but wouldn't have mattered even if it had been NC State. But congrats on your huge win over Tulane.

You don’t hang around golfers apparently. Although I don’t like women’s golf as much as men I have watched a lot of major women’s golf events over the years. Even attended their US Open at Old Waverly. I know lots of people who watch women’s golf…..but they are golf fans.

I agree the US Women's open wasn't bigger, but the Auburn v. MSU probably was. This is essentially a play in game for teh playoffs to let the G5 teams be able to say they participated. If it had been legit competition from another team that was a playoff quality team without a G5 autobid, it would have been bigger.
