During the UL vs, MSU game, Bilas went off about darts and how it is not a sport (being that if you can drink and smoke while doing it, it is not a sport). I am not hear to argue that point, but it got me thinking...

What would happen if you took great sports movies and replaced the sport in it with darts? How would it change the movie?

Anyone up to this creative challenge? I'll start:

Breaking Away would be called Staying Put as the protagonist would continue to drink and smoke at the local watering hole while he looked to play darts like his favorite English dart players. He ends up never leaving town, not going to college, learning a lot of English drinking songs instead of Italian opera, and putting on 20 pounds of beer weight.

Just like there is a difference between kids playing basketball in the park and professional leagues; the same can be said about darts. There are some extraordinary dart players that would be great to make a movie about. Sports have always been pretty relative and subjective, but that's why leagues and the rules that separate themselves exist.

I wouldn't mind letting players smoke while playing basketball, football and baseball. You know at least %30 of these kids smoke cigs it looks cool too.

Imagine playing baseball while drinking and smoking. It would be hilarious and deadly at the same time. Could be the next game in Squid Games.
Once when younger some friends and I went in on renting a gym for the afternoon. The other guys were five years older than we were and teamed up against us. They wanted to run full court and we absolutely blasted them. Ten minutes in and they had to stop because as one guy says, "I can't breathe, I need a cigarette". The older guys were a few years out of highschool, bigger and stronger than we were, but as soon as they said full court we lit up knowing we were going to kil them. That, I can't breathe, I need a cigarette, has always stuck with me. Worth the price of renting the gym all by itself.

This standard would disqualify quite a few of our current sports …including baseball.

It would bring back interest in Nascar. Imagine the Atlanta dui 500, drivers must drink one beer every 2 laps.
Pit stops would be fun as heck with porta pots on wheels.

How about a competitive sports league wherein teams comprised of fans of major college basketball programs not named Duke throw darts at Bilas?

You can drink and smoke while playing any sport. Ask Maurice Claurett or Ty Cobb (you can't ask the latter). NBA players used to smoke at halftime.

The fact that you STARTED with Breaking Away is amazing. One of my all-time lesser known sports movies. Kevin Costner was amazing in that one.
EDIT: NEVER MIND- The movie I was thinking of is American Flyers!!!!! But breaking away is a great one too!

I watch darts all the time on Sky Sports. It's rather big over in the UK.

I don't know I guess it all depends on your definition of sport.

To me if it requires a skill set that not many people have or can obtain and you are competing against someone else, it's a sport.

Sidenote: The World Championships of Darts starts December 15th.

The Iceman and The Ferret are the favorites :)

Bilas also went on to tell us how several female basketball players were really good players blah blah blah...... I bet he has never watch a female hoops game in his life. It came off flat to me.

You guys are drifting from the intent of the OP.

I'll try to get us back on track with this one:

Roy Hobbs : My dad wanted me to be a Dart Thrower. Pop Fisher : You're better than anyone I ever had. And you're the best goddamned bullseye hitter I ever saw.

I play darts semi-competitively. (In a league) Not a sport. It is very fun, and is quite competitive. The drinking is a major bonus. Idk maybe it is a sport?? But very little physical fitness involved, if any. Not unlike golf, a game of precision.

And my favorite:

"Great moments... are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game to 501. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we throw with them. Tonight, we score with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest darts team in the world. You were born to be darts players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great DARTS team the boys from Johnny's Tavern have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it."

More of a bar game. Things like Darts and Pool certainly take skill and finesse, but they aren't physical (aside from the most basic of arm movements). A sport to me requires at least some part of your body to be in shape.

Does Roy throw the flight off the back of his dart the first time he hits a bullseye?
