Since we appear to be wandering the desert for 40 years I figure I'll start this thread here too.

I've rented the 200-600 a few times. Really nice. Heavier for sure, but the weight sort of stabilizes things a bit for you, so still does well handheld.
I bought the Tamron because it was supposed to be nearly as good for half the price and a lot smaller/more compact. But I'm seeing people posting photos from it after owning it for a day and they're just sharper. There have been a few for sale around me on marketplace for ~$1500 and I'm having a hard time resisting temptation. Especially with a trip to Yellowstone this summer.

Yeah the thing what that sort of lens is knowing the sharpness at the zoom level you tend to shoot the most at. If you're out at the max all the time that's what you need to shop for and a lot of them don't do as well there... The long lens in my kit is a tamron 70-300. Fades off a bit sharpness wise at 300. (use it mostly for landscape so doesn't matter as much -- really good at shorter lengths)

1500 is way cheaper than I've seen them before.

Couldn't find (too lazy) the old bird pic thread, so figured I'd just post these here. All taken in Stone State Park near Sioux City.

Got a tip on a burrowing owl in Plymouth Co. Was waiting for me when I got there. Saw my first one ever over by Vermillion, SD earlier this summer.

So jealous. I've been watching ebird to see if any are spotted nearby but no luck yet. Our staff at work is constantly mapping them but the locations are a couple hours away. And on private land.
