Agree. Their playoff game against Salem was the real state championship game.Blacksburg easily second best team in state last year.
The crazy things is that last year's team was even faster. They also have some big-time speed coming up from the JV next year.I wanted Glass to win but hats off to Blacksburg. They have a great team. I have not seen a high school team with that much athleticism and speed outside of the 804 or 757 in a long time. It was the only game of the 13 that Glass played this year where Glass was not the most athletic team. You might hear some Glass fans complain of the officiating (rightfully so to an extent) but, the officiating did not cost Glass the game. Blacksburg was the better team that night. I would really be surprised if they did not win the championship this year. Congratulations to Blacksburg on the win and congratulations to Glass on a great season.
I was at the Glass game last year as well but this year's Blacksburg team is faster than last year's team IMO. Sure Cole Beck had world class speed but as a whole, this year's team is faster. A lot of the same guys from last year with Coffey, Terry, Babcock, Epperly, Mitchell, etc. but those guys are faster than they were last year. The crazy things is that last year's team was even faster. Not sure what has changed in the last few years but they have went from a team that didn't usually have much speed at all to having a lot of elite track guys. Is somebody working with these kids early on speed or is it just a random few years of having great athletes? I ask this because all of these guys have very good sprint mechanics and they already have this by the time they are freshmen.

Where they come from? JV?Blacksburg is definitely faster this year. Especially with the addition of Gholston and Mohammed.
Where they come from? JV?
Yes, those two played Jv last year but the returning varsity guys from last year seemed faster this year too.Where they come from? JV?
They are definitely faster on the defensive line. That being said, outside of Mitchell gaining a little bit of speed there hasn't been that much improvement that I can speed from a speed standpoint. Babcock, Epperly, Coffey and Terry look about the same speed as last year. I would imagine Terry and Coffey's track numbers will very similar to what they were last year.I was at the Glass game last year as well but this year's Blacksburg team is faster than last year's team IMO. I think that is a legitimate question. Before I answer let me state this disclaimer, I am not a citizen of Blacksburg, not connected to the town of Blacksburg or the high school. My opinion is just that, an opinion. I would say yes VT being there has a positive impact on the talent at the high school to an extent. Not that people move there because they are trying to get their child exposure to VT but because VT attracts a diverse group of people for employment. I'm sure VT is the largest employer in the NRV thus attracting people to the area. A lot of the jobs at VT pay well, especially coaches, AD's, and Athletic Trainers, which in turn allows the parents of some of the student/athletes the ability to afford proper nutrition and additional training that most student athletes at other schools do not have access to.This is not a smartass question. But does anyone on here think there is a positive affect from Blacksburg High being in the town of the home of Va Tech ( who just beat a little better than usual UVA team) . Just had to add that. But what do you guys think down in the south West part of the state? Does it attract talent , because of Va Tech?
Well I wasn't alive in 77 LOL but I do know that VT wasn't relevant on the national scene then so there probably wasn't many people attracted to the area then thus, the lack of talent influx. As far as funding goes, I don't doubt that you guys get "little" funding from the county itself. That's pretty normal for any school division with more than one high school in its system. However, funding from the school division and funding from boosters are two different things.we are one high school , in a 4 school county, we get nothing the other 3 don't, in fact we get very little funding and have to compete with the maroon and orange monster for money and fans . As for the handwarmers and jackets we had those in 77, Many seasons we went 2-8 ,1-9. 3-7, where was the influx of talent then?
Get a kick if you must but the median household income for Montgomery County was $49,712 as of the most recent census in 2016. That's the third highest of all the school districts represented in the region. Only Bedford County and Salem City have higher median incomes. Also, Montgomery County has the highest population (by almost 20,000) of any of the other school districts in the region as well. So again, get a kick if you must but something is drawing people to the area.boosters make their money off concessions, we have played 1 regular season game and will be the 3rd playoff game at C-burg. Varsity parents work the JV games and JV parents the varsity, thats the boosters club in Blacksburg. VT hurts attendance at home games , it hurts not being the only game in town . I get a big kick of the myth Blacksburg must have a lot of money because of VT.
So you're saying that not one of those kids that are on the team who has a parent(s) that works at VT, has a parent donate any money to the football program?it isnt to donate to Blacksburg football
of course most of the kids there parents work at VT, and have donated, as well as some local businesses. Do you think the kids parents in Christiansburg dont work at VT? What I'm saying is I have worked Yard sales, chili dinners, chicken dinners, golf tournaments , bought countless gold cards in the past and I know where our stuff is paid for…… it is earnedSo you're saying that not one of those kids that are on the team who has a parent(s) that works at VT, has a parent donate any money to the football program?
I never said it wasn't earned. The original question by @Smallfry2015 was "does anyone on here think there is a positive affect from Blacksburg High being in the town of the home of Va Tech..." and I followed with my original statement. In fact the yard sales, chili dinners, chicken dinners, golf tournaments and gold cards support my original statement that Blacksburg High benefits from VT being there because VT provides decent income for the residents to be able to financially support those fundraisers. Which in turn, has a "positive impact" on Blacksburg High.of course most of the kids there parents work at VT, and have donated, as well as some local businesses. I agree Mike , same for the NRV with VT and Radford UnivI realize Lynchburg is not one of the more affluent areas statewide. Just like everywhere else there's places that have money and there's places that don't. Boonsboro isn't exactly hurting for money. (I realize they are more likely to donate to the band, than the football team) LU benefits the whole city and region.
You are correct, I don't think UVa does have any real impact on CHS but they do on Monticello High. Don't take offense. It's not a negative thing. I am not saying that is the only reason for Bburg having success in athletics but to say that VT being there does not have a positive affect on Bburg simply isnn't true. It does not take away from the fact that Blacksburg has a great tradition of athletics both historically and presently. It's a simple economic principle.ok look at it this way, no slight intended how does UVA impact CHS …………. do they have handwarmers , sideline jackets? influx of talent...…...
I agree 100%. Boonsboro is a very small section of Lynchburg and even still they are very supportive (financially) to the EC Glass football team. Which in turn, has a "positive affect" on the football team. To say that Glass doesn't benefit from the financial resources of the people of Boonsboro would be both untrue and ignorant. Again, it is not a bad thing nor does it discredit a program because they benefit from better resources. Also, I never said other schools don't benefit from Universities being in their city/town but the questions posed but @Smallfry2015 was about VT and Blacksburg.I realize Lynchburg is not one of the more affluent areas statewide. Glad I'm not the only one that thinks so. LOLSalem is what it is because of Roanoke College.![]()
