+1. This was a classic Pelini move (same with Watts). Go after talented recruits that are high academic risks after the other high profile programs have backed off because they have other options that are as equally talented. Sign them and have the fan base go all ga-ga over recruits that aren't going to get on campus. Do your homework and quit going after this low hanging fruit because the competition has backed off

Except not at all. Florida and USC were hard after Blades. He was a big time talent that everyone wanted and DW pulled him in, just like he is with several DB's this year. It sucks me might not qualify, but acting like everyone backed off him is big time revisionist history.

I'm am 100% into self accountability. So I personally don't put KJJ on Riley.

I can however see how someone could say that Riley could have been more proactive in ensuring he was doing what he needed to do before it got to him leaving.

I am more apt to put academic casualties on the coaching staff than I am for kids not making the grade once they get here. On academics, they are a number and are fairly cut and dried. Behaviors may be hidden until they get on campus.

he visited Florida - his academic progress was reviewed and he was told that he was extremely unlikely to qualify and they - Florida - couldn't guarantee him a slot. He decommits from florida and names a top 5 - that includes Neb, USC, Oregon, Georgia >> he never visits USC, Oregon or Georgia because he was told he likely wouldn't qualify and they couldn't guarantee a slot. Nebraska is willing to play the lottery that those other programs were not maybe down the road that will pay dividends.

The bottom line - I guess we can blame whomever we want - but the class reporting for fall camp is a big downgrade from the class that was signed in Feb. It was an average to slightly above average class in Feb (rivals rank = 20) - at present the 2017 class reporting for fall camp is well below average - we lose 2 of the 7 4stars and a DT that was a position of need.

With Blades you are talking about potentially the fastest football player in the country. With DB skills. With the prototypical frame you are looking for. You stay on that guy no matter what.

Not a problem rolling the dice once in awhile. I think blaming the staff is over the top.

However, I think we have to be careful because football is getting more complicated all the time. (My head was spinning in those classes for women that used to be given.)There is a certain level of intelligence that it takes to play the sport. I have no idea if Blades has had trouble with learning systems, but I know some folks who had tons of athleticism but not enough upstairs to fulfill their potential.

Very good and accurate read. We'll have to take chances on guys like Blades. Get use to in. Just like the big guard from OK. OU backed off.

If we lose blades and Watts we're just behind CU at number 32.

Except, in this particular situation he is not accurate, and you are assuming no one else will have attrition to their class with your #32 comment.

An academic redshirt is designed to allow high schoolers, who didn't meet the GPA requirement of 2.3 to be initially eligible, an opportunity to still go to school with their class. The athlete has to have a GPA between 2.0 and 2.99 AND have a qualified SAT/ACT score between 1020 and 910, based on a sliding scale.

IMHO this is rarely used because the standardized test score is where most student athletes, that don't initially qualify, are lacking.

With the sliding scale, the higher the GPA the lower the standardized test score required. For example a 3.5 or above GPA can have an SAT score of 400, where a 2.3 GPA needs to have an 900 score on the SAT.

The GPA is only calculated on 16 core courses 4 years of English, 3 in math, 2 sciences, 2 social sciences and the remaining 5 in combination of additional classes from any of those areas or philosophy, foreign language or religion

Hope that is clear, I am going off memory.

I mean theoretically the kid could enroll if he can get accepted to NU and he could take classes and work with the various resources they have available to get his grades up and he'd still have 4 years of eligibility if he qualified. But nobody does that because if you can't handle high school you ain't gonna handle college. So they send people to JUCO and they pretty much never come back to the school they originally committed to.
