I actually think that’s a really smart, safe hire for them. He’s a high floor coach that’s probably not as likely to leave as other options.

I drove by today, and nah. Their fans don't give two ***** about their program, it's pathetic. I went to the last game of the season where they were literally playing for a berth in the conference championship and there were maybe.... MAYBE 10k asses in seats. By the second half it was more like 6-8k. I live in Hattiesburg and as a State fan I attend more games than 95% of my USM grad friends. I only attend 1-2 games a season. For the "big Eagles" who sit in the new endzone addition with the boxes, it's more of a social event than a football game. Baseball is a really big deal for USM though, and I'm glad they are able to have success there. It helps Hattiesburg in a big way, and it's a great local environment to watch college baseball when I can't make it up to god's gift to college baseball (DNF).
The NCAA really needs to develop a playoff for the non power 5 schools so they have something more to play for. Most of the non p5's are really struggling to stay afloat and they all know they have no chance in the current playoff system. I think an 8 team playoff for them would really give these programs a boost.
