Good hire. His side of the ball at Tenn. had to play 75% of the snaps in a game because of the offense. Went 3 games without scoring a TD at one point.

Vandy finished in the top 25 his 3 seasons there. Let that sink in.

He's been successful, if you only ignore the fact that UT's putrid offense left his unit on the field for way too many snaps. It's like worst case scenario, where your are players are increasingly tired, injured, and apathetic.

This will be a good reset.

Seems to be a pretty decent hire. Guess I've just got to somehow get that image out of my head of GT running for 535 yards against Shoop's UT defense in the first game of the season LONG before the team had quit on everything.

He was considered elite before UT. Looks like it doesn’t take long for him to install his system based on the first year numbers, although they trend down after every year.

We could do a lot worse. I’ll take him.

After further research his defenses at PSU we’re good to great and his defenses at Vandy were very good. His defenses at UT were 17ing awful. Here are his total defense rankings: ‘17-82, ‘16-95, ‘15-14, ‘14-2, ‘13-23, ‘12-19, ‘11-18.

This is what concerned me when we did not hang on to Grantham. With the team we have coming back next year I really didn't want to see our defense experimenting with changing out the successful scheme we had this year. Shoop taking us back to a 4-3 will be a risky move as to how it will work out.

I agree. Very underwhelming hire. I guess if we can have a top 25 offense it'll be ok to have a mediocre defense. Maybe we should run a 4-4

I think it'll be fine; it's much easier to switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 than vice versa. Sweat and Spencer can be every down college DE's, and the rest of the DL remains more or less unchanged. LB is practically unchanged as well since we played 3 LB's with Gray as a hybrid LB/S most of the time anyway. Secondary is unaffected regardless.

Good hire IMO!. UT was a train wreck with no offense at all. His defenses spent the vast majority of time on the field in most games. Combine that with a injuries and the bad situation they were put in with the firing of Butch Jones I'd write this year off and look at his entire body of work.

I actually think a 4-3 will be easier for us to recruit longer term. Even though LBs are one of the easiest positions for us to recruit, I'm not sure we can consistently get the type of NG we need for a good 3-4. I hate that we aren't going to have consistency going into next year when our D is built to win next year. But we might be glad in 2019 to be in a 4-3 when Simmons is gone.

They've also been absolutely decimated by injuries the last 2 seasons.. I believe they have 5 or so rotation guys who are out for the year and last year it was pretty similar.. they had to move DEs inside to play DT bc so many guys got hurt.

I’m not sure of the exact number of quarters, but at one point this year, UT’s offense went like 2 1/2 games without scoring a TD. I imagine it’s hard to have a good defense with that kind of support.
