Budgets are overrated

Budgets are overrated in basketball and beisball. Butler made the championship game with a budget half the size of ours. Basketball is simply recruiting 4-5 guys that can ball- and then 3-4 more that make good back-ups to give you minutes. Then you manage personalities and give them some X's and O's

Yet part of Ray's struggles are due to a lack of financial support. I love how you talk out of both sides of your mouth.

After the John Wall lane violation in the SEC tournament final, Calipari praised Stans and even openly stumped for us to be in the tournament (to no avail). Just saying, it happened. But obviously Gottfried and Stans weren't vacationing together.

I was under the impression that the two HATED each other. I do not remember this at all. Whats fresh on my mind was dmarcus's cell # and Cal ripping our asses on national tv, regarding the "OVERHAUL" wearing fan who flung a bottle at him.

Calipari absolutely went to bat for us to get a bid that year. May have just been conference loyalty or what, but Cookie is right about that.

As for Stansbury and Gottfried, at the time, they did absolutely hate each other, but they seem to have buried the hatchet toward the end of Gottfried's time at Alabama.

I also remember Calipari saying we were worthy of a bid. If I am not mistaken it was in the post game interview of the SECT. He told of how hard we played them both times.

They got some major calls in both wins too.

There is a difference between athletic budgets and booster networks. I think he is talking about financial support from the boosters, which is no question not what it was under Stans.

Precisely what does it matter why the hell he wasn't well-liked by his fellow coaches. As best as I can tell, every MSU football and hoops coach that wins more in our conference than he is supposed to is snubbed -- fine by me. I hope they hate Ray's guts, too. Stans haters have plenty of ammo but are reaching awfully far in this thread.

The man led the team to a better record in the conference season than any MSU coach ever will again, didn't win COY, and that's a knock on him? Hilarious.

Stansbury....

had a chip on his shoulder. The press didn't like him either; David Murry seems to hate his guts. He had an us against the world mentality that didn't lend itself well to popularity contests. Its not complicated. If he worked with the press a little more, or if he didn't criticize other coaches quite so much, or if he worked with the Administration a little more, he'd probably have a couple of COY's and he might still be our coach. But if you compare what he did at MSU with those that came before him, you have to give the guy credit because he had more consistent success than anyone since Babe McCarthy.

It's amazing what time does to memory.

The first time we played Xavier that year, we won by 12. It was a three point game with six minutes left. Hardly an easy 20 point win.

In the NCAAs, the halfcourt shot put them up by 1 point, 34-33. It was a two point game with 10 minutes left. I still prefer to blame it on Doug Shows, just because he is a tool. And yes, he called that game.

While Xavier did indeed shoot the three well that day (13-19), Butler did not in 2002. In scoring their 47 points, Butler hit only 5 of 18 threes. We were a stellar 6-21, including 0-8 from Zimmerman, Harper and Iggy, with Bowers going 2-8. Zimmerman and Austin also manage to go 3-8 from the line. It was a very close game all the way around. We just found enough ways to lose. I remember Bowers taking the last shot. It clanged off the rim and I think before it hit the ground I was thru the door of the BJCC for a pissed off two hour drive home.

Billy Donovan always had nice things to say about Rick Stansbury. I interviewed him postgame outside their locker room the year they came in top ranked and beat us (probably the last time the Hump had a truly spectacular atmosphere) and he was very complimentary of Rick and our program. In fact, of all the coaches I personally interviewed, only Kevin Stallings gave me the impression that he didn't like Rick. Even Gottfried was tongue-in-cheek when it came to their "rivalry" with one another.

Rick didn't win that year because Lawrence Roberts landed in our laps, plain and simple. Isn't that reason enough to get snubbed? Dave Odom took a team with no expectations to the NCAA tourney that year. He's old and was extremely well respected amongst his peers... end of story.

I remember something close to the exact quote after the game, talking about who's in the tourney. "And Mississippi State. If we're number one, what are they?" Stans' teams really did get some of the worst March draws possible. Xavier. Texas in Dallas. Butler just as they were rising. Anyway, he helped us grow to love hoops around here, and I hope we can get back to that soon. Tonight has some possibilities.

Im going to reply to you but this is to everyone. Not that you care but I have openly expressed my confidence in Ray. I have never really bashed Stans as a person and respect his time as our coach. I will make this brief, and will never bring it up again, unless Im pushed. I was openly calling for Stans head in 2004 and on. Im not of the 34 lynch mob. I personally know 3 high school basketball coaches inside of MS who's work ethic and or knowledge of the game..errrr network....who would have done a better job than Stans. As a student of the game, I rarely missed a second from 2002- I will say this and be done....No coach has done less with more in HISTORY than Rick Stansbury. Let that sink in. He had a few good runs and the numbers are there for the an argument. But if you were sitting next to me, year after year after year, watching all of the incompetence at crunch time, lack of work ethic, sloppy play in the fourth qrt......these are things a good coach just has. I promise you Rick Ray will out work Stans in EVERY facet. Once Ray gains the confidence of our GOB network, the rest is history. We have enough talent in this state to compete with ANYBODY... We always have. No more Stans talk from me. Im done with it.
