but it is a tight race. Depasquale does not have the leg that Brauchle has. That being said, I have been told that Mullen is insisting Sean change his kicking style from a three step drop to a two step drop, so he can get the ball off quicker. It has really affected Sean's timing and his accuracy, as seen in the Spring Game.

Does this mean Depasquale already has a 2 step drop? I haven't paid attention.

Otherwise, I'd say the are equally accurate and veg has the strongest leg.

if you have a good kicker with a 2 step drop, and an equivalent kicker with a 3 step drop and stronger leg....then wouldn't you use the 2 step kicker for short/medium kicks, and the 3 step kicker for medium/long kicks? wouldn't that be a good situation to be in, rather than converting your 3 step kicker to a 2 step kicker that's basically now exactly the same as your current 2 step kicker?

maybe Mullen told Brocholli that as long as he was using a 3 step drop he would only be used for FGs outside of DD's range, but didn't 'insist' he change but that it was his choice, and Brocholli is switching to try to win the starting job?

And changing your style is ridiculously hard. However, the two step drop is pretty standard, which makes me wonder how Brauchle developed a three stop drop to start with.

If given the opportunity to be our full time starting place kicker I just don't see how DD cannot be one of our most accurate kickers to ever step onto Scott Field. The kid just has what it takes.

with nonveggie kicking it's more of a croom-esque kicking game...punt or go for it if you aren't inside the 30.

Heard it straight from the horse's mouth... If you were at the spring game you noticed Sean kicking the ball VERY low and his timing was clearly off... Also, every time he kicked a field goal he would turn and look at Mullen and shake his head. He isvery disgruntled that Coach Mullen is insisting he change his style, and I can see why. I told Sean, if the game is on the line you kick that <17> ball the way youalways have, ask for forgivness after the win! Brauchle was an all-american kicker at Gulf Coast, where he set JUCO records. Now Mullen is insisting he change to a two step drop to get the ball off quicker, to help avoid blocked kicks. Have we really been having an issue with blocked kicks? I didn't think so...

We don't need to screw up the best leg we've had since Westerfield. Let the damn boy kick the ball anyway he chooses until we get several consecutive kicks blocked. Reading this sort of pissed me off.

As a former kicker and instructor, I can tell you that the 2 step drop will not give him any more leg. Intact it will probably give him less and eternally destroy his mechanics. Who knows he might be able to adapt to it if that's what Mullen really wants. Very hard to change at this level tho...

BDJhttp://bulldawgjunction.com/news/story.php?article=4413 article on kicking

Interesting piece from a long-time special teams coach. Excerpt:

In high schools, what's happening to special teams is that there is nobody around to teach them the fundamentals. Then when they go to college, they rarely get the fundamentals there, either.

In high school, those coaches are focused on offense and defense, and they have their plate full enough. And lately, these coaches have little access to clinics or getting information at clinics to tell them how to coach these guys. So it's being pressed all the way down to grade school that there is nobody out there to coach them and teach them the proper techniques.

What you have is all these kids going to all these summer camps now. But frankly, I haven't seen many camps where they break down the techniques. Most camps, these kids just go and kick. They see how far they can kickoff or punt the ball rather than receive fundamentals.

was against Houston into the wind and some dubmass fired the cannon as he was about to kick the field goal. I would give him the benefit of the doubt and say that even if Brauchle was healthy he would have missed that field goal as well. The odds heavily in favor of him missing it.

Those stats are skewed somewhat. Brauchle was injured during some of those FG attempts. Brauchle can outkick DD an average of 10-15 yards per kick. I didn't see any problem with a 3 step drop and why change the kid when he has one year left? Let him keep kicking 50+ yarders with a 3 step. Hell, its better than Crooming it everytime just outside the 30-35 yard line as Silentdog stated. With Brauchle, we are a threat to score almost after we cross the 45. Game on the line I'd much rather have a JUCO All American kicker with a cannon leg taking the kick.....
