but at least we upped it. I feel like we just wrapped him up for a little while. Call this comment genespagey or whatever, I don't give a **** but Dan Mullen is happy here and will win big at Mississippi State. You can't sheer my wool with anything right now.

Now everyone watching the Gator Bowl, especially recruits, will know that Mullen is locked-up* for the forseeable future.

*as locked up as a coach can be, which doesn't really mean much in reality.

...in reality, if JoePA retires next year and Penn State decides that he is their man, 1.4 million won't be a problem. But now you can go to the recruits and say that you just signed a new contract.

I had been hearing 3.1 but think this is more in-line. Also, any word on a bump for assistants?

Is in the buyout clauses. Because it's almost impossible for us to get, and especially keep, a buyout clause high enough to scare people off. If we put it at 2million, in 2 years the contract is halfway over and the buyout will drop.

he's out to make a name for himself. If he takes the Penn State job, he'll be in the shadow of JoePa for many years to come. The Big 10 ain't the SEC, and Mullen clearly likes it here. As he said, does it get better than a head coaching job in the SEC? Glad to have him signed up, hopefully Tobias, et al, take note of this.

With 90% of Mullen's pay coming from outside of State of MS funds, the state government's say over the length of the contract is overbearing and unnecessary.

for all the small ways the 4 year thing may hurt us it saves our asses many times over. Otherwise you could have Lonnie Tinkle giving Crooms a lifetime contract.

You have to consider Joe Pa surely is not doing a tremendous amount of film watching and game planning at the age of 84. It just seems to me that an assistant is taking the bulk of this work now and doing a good job. I just don't know if Penn State can promote a "no name" assistant to take the place of the famous Joe Pa.

Nobody in the country believes that Auburn isn't going to burn in flames over Cam Newton. Chizick is practically already damaged goods. They may have to fire him soon. And I don't think other schools are going to be itching to snap him up.

Nobody is out there extolling his coaching abilities either. He's not a bad coach, but he isn't in the same discussion with Saban's coaching ability.

That is virtually impossible but Auburn is in the unfortunate position of losing their best coach to another school because he's not their head coach. However, Chizik really is good at what he was brought in there for.

They will hire a Ray Perkins after significant internal battling over the successor. And no matter how good the successor actually is, he is destined to be "the guy who followed Joe Pa." Four years later, they'll hire a modern day Bill Curry from outside the "family" and will rue the day that they did so, especially when their fans find out they could have had that moment's Bobby Bowden just before he goes on a f'n tear.

Unlike Bear, though, the old crotchety MFer has clung to his perch for WAY TOO LONG.

even spell Mullen correctly, your cryptic message, trying to sound "in the know" means nothing to anyone.

If anyone actually thinks that Joe Pa is actually coaching that team, I think they would be surprised. Paterno is only the coach in title only.

In-Game Joe Pa doesn't even wear a headset anymore and hasn't for a while..nor does he really do any coaching.
He is the face of the team but doesn't really do much anymore. He just gets to keep racking up the wins.
