If a school guarantees a scholarship to a player for four years, will that count against the scholarship limits for the 4 years even if the player is dismissed from the team or quits? Or will it only bind the school financially to the player?
Will the Power 5 police themselves?
I'm a bit confused about what happens if the Big 5 does break away.... If that happens, does the NCAA still exist, but only with the WAC, Sun Belt, CUSA, MAC, etc.? How would that work in terms of the bowl games? Would the bigger bowls only invite the Big 5 teams, and the smaller bowls invite the remaining NCAA teams? Or would the bowls match schools up from both divisions? Would there be 2 basketball tournaments, one for the big 5 and one for the NCAA?
The the five conferences break away, it will work like the NCAA and NAIA right now. Organizations will be completely separate and will only interact to the extent both organizations pass rules allowing it. Who knows how it would end up, but I would guess the bowl games would call the shots on who they invited. For basketball, I would bet they would attempt to have one basketball tournament just because it's so popular with the current format and that's an area where the big schools need the small schools, but there's no guarantee they'll be able to work it out.
This is the first domino. Jackie Wayne said in the mid 2000's that 64ish bigger schools would break off from the NCAA. He foresaw it being four conferences of 16 to make 64, but whatever.
Bottom line is, these power conferences will either form their own organization or will be a separate division of the NCAA in the next two decades. Don't think I like it.
And the rich get richer. Glad we are part of it.
We're gonna need every penny of that SEC Network money.
The arms race just jumped up a notch. We were just starting to somewhat even the playing field with the truly big money schools, but I foresee this being the wild west with regard to spending and recruiting.
It's a set number, right? 85 players times $5,000 = $425,000/year.
Remember that all this money is being made on the backs of the fans. They think we are going to be here forever to fund this. Just like the housing market, the bubble will eventually burst.
